Have you traveled on any of the new giant airplanes? If you have not been a passenger (旅客) on one of these planes, try to imagine a jet which is more than seventy meters long and more than five stories high at the tail. Such a plane costs at least twenty-five million dollars to build. It costs at least $6,000 to fill this giant with fuel (燃料).

Inside, the giant jet looks more like a great theater than a plane. It has six kitchens, and they are all needed when the plane is full of passengers. The jet holds more than 400 passengers. Imagine that number in one jet plane! Is there any danger that the jet's engines (发动机) will fail? Fortunately, the planes appear to be quite safe. On each plane there are twice as many engines as the jet needs. If two engines fail on the same side, the plane can easily use its other engines to land. I know science's limitations, but with my worship of science I always let the scientists do the groundwork, having complete confidence in them. I let them discover the physical universe for me-the physical universe that I de-sire so much to know. Then, after getting as much as possible of the scientist's knowledge, I remember that human beings are greater than the analytical scientist that the latter cannot tell us everything, not tell us about the most important things, the things that make for happiness.

It is instead intuitive thinking that alone can help us attain the truth and wisdom of living. Truly intuitive thinking is always the type of thinking that is sort of warm, emotional, and half-humorous, mixed in part with idealism and in part with delightful nonsense. Great wisdom consists in not demanding too much of human nature, and yet not altogether spoiling it by indulgence. One must try to do one's best and at the same time, one must, when rewarded by partial success or confronted with partial failure, say to oneself, “I have done my best. ” This is about all the philosophy of living that one needs.

After science has done its groundwork, religion, art, literature, and philosophy must take their rightful place in human life. These things do not seem to tie together with science in the modem world; the specialist has taken over the human being. For science can never replace art, religion, literature and philosophy. Next to knowledge, we must retain, and never lose, a taste for life, a respect for life, a sense of wonder at life, and a proper and reasonable attitude toward life. The taste for life must be simple, the respect for life must be truly profound, the sense of wonder must be fully alive, and the attitude toward life must be harmonious and reasonable .

[ ]

A.be satisfied with moderate achievement.

B.avoid failure at all costs.

C.ignore human nature .

[ ]

A.a true taste for life depends upon science.

B.science is closely related to the humanities.

C.harmony can be found among scientists.

D.experts have controlled our way of life.

[ ]

A.Science teaches us more about life than art, religion, literature and philosophy.

B.Art, religion, literature and philosophy are no less important than science .

D.Knowledge of the physical universe gives us wisdom about life.

Milk was one of the main human foods long before history was written. It will probably remain one as long as there are animals that give milk.

The old word “milk” came from Sanskirt (梵文) , one of the oldest languages known to man. A very old picture of milking has been found. It was drawn five thousand years ago.

In the years long ago, people got their milk from their own animals. But in modem times new inventions made the milk industry a big business. In 1851 Gall Borden found a way to take some of the water from milk. This made it keep longer. Four years later, Louis Pasteur introduced a way to kill the bacteria (细菌) in milk. Next, a special milk bottle was made. This was followed by the invention of machines that could fill bottles with milk.

These discoveries had a great effect on the industry. They meant that milk could be stored longer.

In some faraway Turkish village of Kuskoy, whistling is as important as talking. In fact, whistling is talking because the villagers speak and sing by whistling. Kuskoy parents begin to teach their boys and girls the language of whistling about the time the children learn to talk. It is considered so important that the village school includes it as one of the subjects taught along with the Turkish language.

This art of communication has taken centuries to develop. The village of Kuskoy spreads out across two hillsides that are separated by a deep valley . The villagers had to find an easy way to communicate where their voices couldn't carry. They developed a high-pitched(声音的) whistle language that could be transmitted as far as five miles through air. As a result, Kuskoy, which means “bird village” in Turkish, has come to be known as a whistler'paradise(乐园).

The news was sent over the "mountain telephone" by whistling. The lover's adventure (冒险经历) was quickly known to all the villagers.
