Can trees talk? Yes——but not in words Scientists have reason to believe that trees do communicate (互通信息) with each other Not long ago, resear- chers learned some surprising things First a willow tree(柳树)attacked in the woods by caterpillars(毛毛虫)changed the chemistry of its leaves and made them taste so terrible that the caterpillars got tired of the leaves and stopped eating them Then even more astonishing, the tree sent out a special vapour — a signal causing its neighbours to change the chemistry of their own leaves and make them less tasty

Communication, of course, doesn't need to be always in words We can talk to each other by smiling, raising our shoulders and moving our hands We know that birds and animals use a whole vocabulary of songs, sounds, and movements Bees dance their signals, flying in certain patterns that tell other bees where to find nectar(花蜜)for honey So why shouldn't trees have ways of sending messages?

1 When attacked, a willow tree will protect itself by________

[ ]

A changing its leaveschemistry

B changing its leavescolour

C talking to caterpillars

D sending a special vapour

2 From the passage we know that catrpillars________

[ ]

A like willow trees

B enjoy eating fallen leaves

C feed on willow tree leaves

D could communicate with willow trees

3 Caterpillars will stop eating willow tree leaves which________

[ ]

A have a chemical change and become tasteless

B have a pleasant taste

C are being attacked

D are communicating

4 According to the passage, how do willow trees communicate with each other?

[ ]

A They talk in words

B They send out a special vapour

C They wave their leaves

D They make special sounds

5 According to the passage, bees communicate with each other by______

[ ]

A talking

B making unusual sounds

C singing songs

D. fly in certain patterns

In 1955, a man named Raymond Kroc entered a partnership with two brothers named McDonald. They operated a popular restaurant in California which sold food that was easy to prepare and serve quickly. Hamburgers, French fries, and cold drinks were the main foods on the limited menu. Kroc opened similar eating places under the same name “McDonald's”, and they were an instant success. He later took over the company and today it is one of the most famous and successful “fast-food” chains in America and the world.

Why was his idea so successful? Probably the most important reason was that his timing was right. In the 1950s, most married women stayed home to keep house and take care of their children. During the 1960s, the movement for equality (平等) between men and women and an economy (经济) that needed more families to have two money-earners resulted in many women returning to the workplace. This meant that they had less time and energy to do housework, so they depended more on fast-food restaurants.

Single parents also have little time to spend in the kitchen. People living alone because of divorce (离婚) or a preference for a “single lifestyle” also depend on this type of food, since cooking for one is often more trouble than it is worth.

Fast food is not part of the diet of all Americans. Another of the 1960s was called back-to-nature movement. More and more Americans based their diets on natural foods. This preference for natural foods continues to this day. These products can now be found not only in the special health food store but also in many supermarkets.

1.The passage is mainly about ________.

[ ]

A.how and why “McDonald's” became successful

B.the effect social and economic changes have on people's eating habits

C.why Americans prefer natural food

D.American eating habits

2.Which of the following was not a reason for Raymond Kroc's success?

[ ]

A.His partnership with the McDonald brothers.

B.A changing economy.

C.The back-to-nature movement.

D.Women's liberation movement.

3.We can infer from the passage that ________.

[ ]

A.natural foods are still popular today

B.many married women in America returned to work in the 1960s

C.McDonald's fast food is popular all over the world

D.divorce caused people to change their eating habits

4.Which of the following is wrong?

[ ]

A.Not all American people like fast food

B.Before the 1960s, women usually stayed at home

C.fast foods are more popular than natural foods in America

D.Raymond Kroc became the owner of McDonald's

How men first learned to invent words is unknown, All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communicate (交际) with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to stand for those sounds and which could be written down, Those sounds, whether spoken, or written in letters, we call words.

There are several things about motorcycling that the average citizen dislikes. A cyclist's appearance has something to do with this dislike. Motorcyclists frequently look dirty; in fact, they are dirty. On the road there is little to protect them from mud, bird droppings, etc. For practical reasons they often dress in old clothing which looks much less respectable than the clothing of people who ride in cars. For the same reason motorcyclists usually wear dark colors. Perhaps this helps to explain why they are sometimes believed to have very bad natures. In old plays of long ago, bad characters usually wore black. In cowboy movies the “bad guys( = fellows)”usually wear black hats while the “good guys” wear lighter colors.

Something else about their appearance makes an unpleasant impression. In their practical protective clothing they look very much like the men on military (军事的) motorcycles in the movies of World War Ⅱ - cruel enemies who roared(咆哮) into peaceful villages filling peoples' hearts with fear.

Probably the machine itself also produces anger and fear. Motorcycles are noisy, thought some big trucks are even noisier. But trucks are big and carry heavy loads: they are accepted because they perform a needed service, making America move. Motorcycles, on the other hand, make an unpleasant noise just to give their riders pleasure. That is what is commonly thought. In the woods motorcycles frighten animals. Roaring along quiet streets, they wake sleeping families and made babies cry .

1.The main idea of this passage is ________ .

[ ]

A.why the average people dislike motorcycling

B.why motorcyclists dress in dark clothes

C.why the average people sometimes think motorcyclists have bad natures

D.why big trucks, though they are even noisier than motorcycles, are accepted

2.Motorcyclists usually wear dark colors because ________ .

[ ]

A.they want to copy“bad guys” in cowboy movies

B.they have bad natures

C.they are not easy to look dirty

D.they are less respectable than those who drive cars

3.Which of the following does NOT explain why a motorcyclist's appearance gives people unpleasant impression?

[ ]

A.Bad characters in old plays wore black

B.At night motorcyclists wake sleeping families

C.The “bad guys” in cowboys wear black hats

D.The men on military motorcycles in the movies of

World War Ⅱ wear similar protective clothing as motorcyclists do

4.Though they are even noisier than motorcycles, big trucks are usually accepted because ________ .

A.they carry heavy loads and give their drivers pleasure as well

B.they don't run along quiet streets

C.they are bigger, so it is natural for them to make louder noises

D.they play an important part in transport
