Life gets noisier every day and very few people can be free from noise of some sort or another. It doesn't matter where you live ---- in the middle of a modern city, or a far away village ---- the chances are that you will be disturbed (烦扰) by jet aeroplanes, transistor radios, oil-powered engines, etc.We seem to be getting used to noise, too. Some people feel quite lonely without background music while they are working.

Scientific tests have shown that total silence can be a very frightening experience for a human being. However, some people enjoy listening to pop music which is very loud, and this can do harm to their eardrums (耳鼓). The noise level in some discos is far above the usual safety level for heavy industrial areas.

One recent report about noise and concentration (专心) suggested that although a lot of people say that any noise disturbs their concentration. What really influences their ability to concentrate is a chance in the level of noise. It goes on to say that a background noise which doesn't change too much (music, for example) may even help people to concentrate.

(1)According to the passage, the noise pollution ________.

[ ]

A.has become the worst in the countryside

B.has become better in big cities

C.has spread from cities to villages

D.has been controlled in modern cities

(2)What does background music refer to?

[ ]

A.Music played while people are working.

On a rainy day, yon will see many streams of muddy (多泥的) water running down the slopes (斜坡) of a hill. The water is muddy because it washes away soil from the hill slopes.

Sometimes soil is blown away by strong winds. When the soil is carried away by water or wind, we say that the land is eroded (侵蚀). This is known as soil erosion.

Plants can not grow on eroded land. There is not enough soil on eroded land to give them the things they need.Plants need water and salts from the soil.

We can do a number of things to stop soil erosion. This is called soil conservation(保护).

One way of soil conservation on flat, open ground is to grow small plants such as grasses. Their roots hold the soil tightly together.

Another way is to plant trees around an open field. Thus soil erosion by strong winds can not take place. Rows of trees act as a very big wall.

Soil erosion on slopes can be stopped by cutting “steps” called terraces (梯田). Water carrying soil can not run straight down the slope now. It has to run down the terraces. This slows down the flow (流速) of the water. Most of the soil in the water is left behind on the terraces.

(1)On a rainy day the water running down the slopes of a hill is muddy because ________.

[ ]

A.there are no terraces on the slopes

B.there are no small plants on the slopes

C.it washes away soil on the slopes

D.there is too much soil on the slopes

(2)Plants cannot grow on eroded land because _______.

[ ]

A.there is a lot of sand in it

TOKYO, Japan--An earthquake measuring 8.0 hit the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido early Friday. The quake was the strongest anywhere in the world this year. Several million people live on the island. Japan's national broadcasting agency,NHK, reported 236 people had been hurt, but no deaths had been reported. Tsunami waves measuring about 3 feet(1 meter)began hitting the eastern coast of Japan's northernmost island, and officials warned all residents in the region to seek higher ground. A fire broke out at oil refinery on the island after the earthquake, and television stations reported a train derailment and a landslide near a highway tunnel. The US Geological Survey measured the quake at 8.0 but authorities in Japan initially gave it a magnitude of 7. 8. The USGS said the temblor was located 33 kilometers(20 miles)under the Earth's crust, about 796 miles north / northwest of Tokyo, and began at 4∶50 a.m. local time(1950 GMT). The second quake occurred at 6∶08 a.m.(2108 GMT).

Some time people call each other “seared-cat”, but have you ever thought about this expression? When a cat is frightened, its heart starts beating faster, its muscles get tense, and there are changes in the chemicals in its bloodstream. Although the cat doesn't realize this, its body is getting ready for action. If the danger continues, the animal will do one of two things. It will defend itself, or it will run away as fast as it can.

Something like this also happens to people. When we are excited, angry, scared, or aroused by other emotions(feelings), our bodies go through many physical changes. Our hearts beat faster, and our muscles get tense. All of these changes make us more alert and ready to react. We, too get ready to defend ourselves or run.

Human beings, however, have a problem that animals, never face. If we give way to our feelings and let them take over, we can get into trouble. Have you ever said something in anger--or hit somebody--and regretted it later? Have you ever shouted at a teacher, told somebody you were lonely, or said you were in love, and then wished later you had kept your mouth shut? It isn't always wise to express your feelings freely.

Does this mean that it's smarter always to hide our feelings? No! If you keep feelings of anger, sadness, and bitterness hidden away or bottled up inside, your body stays tense. Physical illness can develop, and you can feel churned up inside. It can actually be bad for your health.(It isn't good to keep pleasant feelings inside either; all feelings need to be expressed.)

Feelings that you keep all bottled up inside don't just go away. It's as if you bought some bananas and stuck them in a cupboard. You might not be able to see them, but before long you'd smell them. And if you opened the cupboard, chances are you'd see little fruit flies hovering all over them. They'd be rotten.

You can try to treat emotions as if they were bananas in the cupboard. You can hide them and you can pretend they don't exist, but they'll still be around. And at last you'll have to deal with them, just like those bananas.

(1)The best title for this article is ________.

[ ]

A. Emotions Affect Our Bodies

D. Feelings that People Have

(2)The underlined words “churned up” in the fourth paragraph mean ________.

[ ]

A. gradually they'll disappear

B. they won't exist any more

C. they will hover all over

D. your body stays tense

(3)The author wrote this article in order to ________.

[ ]

A. tell us that it isn't good to keep feelings inside

B. give us some advice on how to express our feelings

C. make us face the problem that we have to deal with feelings

D. make us know that it isn't always wise to express our feelings freely

It is said that water used in agriculture will drop to 35 percent of the city's water consumption in 2010 from 43 percent in 1998, and the figure will continue to drop to28 ~ 30 percent in 2020. Beijing will increase the speed of renovation(修复)of its urban water supply equipment. It is reported that more than 15 percent of water is lost during distribution(分发). Water-saving equipment and efficient management can save Beijing more than 537 million cubic meters by 2010.

Shanghai still faces key problems connected with its water resources and environments. Since 1998, the city has invested nearly US $169 million to treat its rivers, especially Suzhou Creek. The city's rivers have become noticeably clearer since putting it into action.

The government will provide a further US $ 24 million for the treatment of rivers and US $12 million to treat sewage(污物).

This year's task is to improve the water quality at the three ports of Longhua, Yangshupa and Hongkou. Another emphasis to raise the water system is Songjiang New Area with a project worth US $ 4.8 million. Efforts will be made to improve public awareness about the need to protect water resources.

People and the sources of air pollution are found in the same places. This means that cities with large populations have the biggest problem of dirty air. Air pollution is caused by many different things. A major source of air pollution is the gas fumes (烟) from cars. Statistics (统计数字) show that 93 percent of all auto trips are within cities. Another major source of dirty air is the burning of coal and oil for energy. This energy is needed to make electricity. Of course, much more electricity is used in the city than in the country.

On the average, we throw away more trash and garbage than the year before. The burning of garbage contributes to air pollution. Many major industries are also responsible for the dirty air in the around cities. The fumes from iron, steel, chemical, and petroleum production add particles to the air.

The effects of air pollution range from mild headaches to death. The levels of pollution found in heavy traffic may cause headaches or loss of clear vision. Wherever coal and oil are used for fur, fumes may kill trees and plants and cause metal to corrode. In some of the larger cities, these fumes endanger the lives of human beings by contributing to lung diseases and causing early death.
