From a plane you can see the fields, cities, mountains or rivers below. If we go into space, we see more and more of the earth. People and man-made satellites are sent out into space to look at the earth, the stars and other planets and learn more about them.

The moon is our nearest neighbour in space. It is our satellite and men have visited it already. It is smaller than the earth. Plants can't grow on the moon because there's no air or water on it.

The moon hasn't its own light. It shines back the light of the sun. When the sun is shining on the side of the moon that faces us, is shining on the side of the moon that faces away from us. In fact the moon isn't as near as it looks. It is three hundred and eighty thousand kilometres away from the earth.. Of course we can fly to the moon in a spaceship. A spaceship flies very, very fast, and it flies at about eleven kilometres a second. So it only takes more than three days to get there by spaceship.

(1)From a plane you can see ________ than on land.

[ ]

A.less
B.more
C.fewer
D.clearer

(2)We can know from the passage that ________ can live on the moon.

[ ]

C.man
D.no animals

(3)The moon sometimes isn't seen because ________.

[ ]

A.it is too far away from us

B.the sun is shining on the side of the moon facing us

C.the side that reflects the sunlight doesn't face us

D.it is rainy or windy

(4)The moon looks bright because ________.

[ ]

A.it has its own light

B.it shines back the light of the sun

C.it is near enough to see

D.it can shine itself as the sun does

(5)Which of the following is right?[ ]

A.The moon is the nearest planet to the earth.

B.Some people have been to the moon by plane.

C.People have visited the moon and other planets.

Now satellites are helping to forecast (预报) the weather. They are in space, and they can reach any part of the world. The satellites take pictures of the atmosphere, because this is where the weather forms. They send these pictures to the weather stations. So meteorologists (气象学家) can see the weather of any part of the world. From the pictures, the scientists can often say how the weather will change.

Today, nearly five hundred weather stations in sixty countries receive satellite pictures. When they receive new pictures, the meteorologists compare them with earlier ones. Perhaps they may find that the clouds have changed during the last few hours. This may mean that the weather on the ground may soon change, too. In their next weather forecast, the meteorologists can say this.

The weather satellites are also used for other work. So satellites are great help to the meteorologists. Before satellites were invented, the scientists could forecast the weather for about 24 or 48 hours. Now they can make good forecasts for three or five days. Soon, perhaps, they may be able to forecast the weather for a week or more ahead.

(1)As we know, satellites travel ________.

[ ]

A.in the atmosphere
B.above the ground
C.in space
D.above space

(2)According to the passage satellites are used in ________.

[ ]

A.weather forecasting
B.the study of space
C.receiving pictures
D.comparing pictures

(3)Weather satellites take pictures of the atmosphere because ________.

[ ]

A.it is easy to do
B.clouds form there
C.the weather forms there
D.rain and snow form there

(4)Meteorologists forecast the weather ________.

[ ]

A.when they receive satellite pictures

B.after they have compared new satellite pictures with earlier ones

C.before they receive pictures

D.after they have taken pictures of clouds

(5)With the development of science and technology, man will soon be able to forecast the weather for ________.

[ ]

A.24 or 48 hours
B.three or five days
C.nearly a week
D.a week or even longer

A single rocket has not enough power to launch (发射) a satellite, but two or three rockets can do this work.

Let us see how a three-stage rocket work. The first stage forms the tail; the second stage is in the middle; and the third stage is in front. The satellite sits in the nose of the third stage. Each stage has its own engines. The first stage is used for driving the rocket at the time of launching. It lifts the rocket into the sky. After a few minutes the first stage burns out and falls away. The engines of the second stage then drives the rocket. Later this stage burns out and falls away, and the weight of course gets lighter. As a result, the rocket travels faster. So it gains enough speed to break away from the earth's pull. When the last engine burns out, the launching is successfully ended. The satellite now travels in space by its own speed.

(1)Launching a satellite can be done at least by ________.

[ ]

A.one rocket
B.two rockets
C.three rockets
D.four rockets

(2)The farther a satellite travels from the earth, ________.

[ ]

A.the slower it will fly in the sky

B.the heavier its weight will become

C.the greater the pull of the earth will get

D.the weaker the pull of the earth will get

(3)Which of the following is TRUE about the satellite?

[ ]

A.The first stage forms the tail.

B.It connects with the second stage.

C.It can drive the rocket out of the earth.

D.It sits on the ground before being launched.

(4)From the passage we know that ________.

[ ]

A.a satellite will weigh little or nothing in space

B.a satellite will fly faster and faster in space

C.the third stage is the most important to a satellite

D.a satellite gains enough speed before the second stage falls

(5)The best title for this passage should be ________.

[ ]

A.The Pull of the Earth
B.Man-Made Satellites
C.How to Make a Rocket
D.How to Launch Satellites

When several different people look at the same person, it is not unusual for each of them to see different things; when you alone observe one behavior or one person at two different times, you may see different things. The following are but some of the factors that lead to these varying perceptions (感知,认知):

  1) Each person's perceptions of others are formed by his or her own cultural conditioning, education, and personal experiences.

  2) Sometimes perceptions differ because of what we choose to observe and how we deal with what we've observed. It is not necessarily true that person perception is based on observations of a particular person. Your observations may be totally controlled by what others have told you about this person; or you may focus (聚焦) primarily on the situation or role relationship. Most people do not use the same yardstick (标准) to measure their parents, their friends, and strangers.

  3) Sometimes we see only what we want to see or don't see what may be obvious to others because of our own needs, desires, or temporary emotional states. This is a process known as selective perception. Selective perception is obviously more difficult when contradictory (矛盾的) information is particularly obvious, but it can be done. We can ignore (忽视) the stimulus——“He's basically a good boy so that I was not shoplifting.” We can reduce the importance of the contradictory information——“All kids (孩子) get into mischief (顽皮). Taking a look from the bookstore isn't such a big deal.” We can change the meaning of the contradictory information——“It wasn't shoplifting because he was going to pay for it later.”……

(1)The first factor given by the author that affects our perception is ________.

[ ]

A.the abilities of one's auditory (听) and visual (视) sensors

B.cultural background and personal experiences

C.experiences one learns from others

D.critical measures taken by other people

(2)While observing a particular person ________.

[ ]

A.one is likely to take all aspects (方便) into consideration

B.one pays more attention to his/her advantages

C.children often differ from grown-ups in perception

D.one tends to choose certain cues (提示) to look for

(3)Observation of the same person by two people at the same time may differ because ________.

[ ]

A.their measuring yardsticks are not the same

B.either of them may be slow to catch information

C.the time for observation is not long enough

D.each of them uses different language to express his/her impressions

(4)The word “stimulus” in paragraph 4 refers to ________.

[ ]

A.something attractive
B.selective perception
C.contradictory information
D.shoplifting

(5)The worst thing in selective perception is that ________.

[ ]

A.perceived information runs against your desire

B.facts can be totally ignored or distorted (扭曲)

C.importance of the contradictory information can be overrated (估计过高)

D.the same information may not be dealt with in the same way

There were two interesting pieces of news items in the paper a few years ago. One was about a man who received a bill from the telephone company for £ 2,000 a month for doing nothing.

The connection between the two news items is simple: computers the best invention of the 20th century. The telephone bill came from a computer which made a terrifying mistake; that man's bill was only £ 23.26. The other item was not as amusing. A man walked into the unguarded computer room of a large packaged food company and expertly programmed the computer to pay him £ 2,000 a month for raw meat which he “supplied” to the company. Of course he never sent the meat, but he certainly received the money. The computer wrote out a bill, and even “signed” it. It was only a random (随便的) check that uncovered the trick. It could be happening in thousands of other companies all over the world.

Computers are not the magical workers that some people say they are. They make mistakes, they're sometimes slower than human beings and they're easily fooled.

The US used to conscript (征兵) people with the help of a computer. The army sent out a card, which had to be filled in and sent back. It was easy to avoid being called up simply by spreading candle wax (腊) on the card. The computer couldn't read the card, and did nothing with it.

It's in our everyday life that computers cause many problems. Let's get back to using people instead of computers, before a mistake that we can't put right.

(1) In the first paragraph we can conclude ________.

[ ]

A.the paper is telling a lie

B.the first sentence is the topic sentence

C.the two news items made people surprised

D.if a man did nothing at all for the telephone company, he would still get £ 2,000 a month

(2) The main idea of the second paragraph is ________.

[ ]

A.the computers are magical workers

B.the computers can do anything as well as man

C.the computers can write out the bill and even sign it

D.the computers sometimes also make mistakes

(3) Computers ________.

[ ]

A.were used to conscript people

B.are usually faster than human beings

C.are not so magical as people expect

D.were not easily controlled and always fooled human beings

(4) The writer thinks ________.

[ ]

A.we'd better use people instead of computers in our everyday life

B.we should not use computers because they always make mistakes

C.computers are widely used in our everyday life

D.if we want to work well, don't use the computers
