Every night she listened to her father going around the house, looking at the doors and windows. She heard the back door closed, she could hear the fastener of the front window click, and the restless pad of his feet going back to try the front door. It wasn't only the outside doors he locked. He locked the empty kitchen too. He was locking something out, but obviously it was something capable of entering into his first defenses. He raised his second line all the way up to bed.

In fourteen years, she thought unhappily, the house would be his. He had paid twenty-five pounds down and the rest he was paying month by month as rent. Of course, he was in the habit of saying,“yes,”he repeated,“I've improved the property,”looking around for a nail to drive in, a weed to uproot. It was more than a sense of property; it was a sense of honesty. Some people who bought their homes through the society let them go to rack and ruin and then cleared out.

She stood with her ear against the wall, a small, dark, angry, immature(不成熟)figure. There was no more to be heard from the other room; but in her inner ear she still heard the foot-steps of a property owner, the tap-tap of a hammer, the scrape of a spade, the whistle of radiator(散热器)steam, a key turning, a bolt pushed home, the little busy sounds of men building barriers(栏栅). She stood lost in thought.

Americans are always in a hurry, they seem to be under permanent pressure to think that there is something more to do the next moment. This fast pace is reflected in the popularity of fast-food restaurants, one-stop stations and micro-ovens. They hate to waste their time and would frown if their time is wasted by interruptions or by poor service. They appreciate the practice of doing things as quickly as possible, as in their eyes,“patience is the virtue of asses.”

In contract, people in Indonesia believe in“rubber time”, to the extent that time can stretch or shrink. In Africa, people who do something in a rush are actually asking for trouble; they'd be suspected of trying to cheat! In their culture, a slow unusual, worth doubt.

  Here is a contract between the slow pace people (SPP) and the fast pace people(FPP);

◇SPP-Consider an appointment as a target to achieve, if possible.

FPP-take a promise seriously and try to keep it by all means.

◇SPP-are dedicated to people and human relationship.

FPP-are devoted to work rather than to human relationship.

   SPP-change plans easily.

FPP-follow and stick to the plans.

◇SPP-decide to be punctual or not based on human relationship.

   FPP-stress punctuality.

◇SPP-show strong tendency to build lifetime friendship.

Are some people born clever, and others born stupid? Or is intelligence(智力) developed by our environment (环境) and our experience?

Strangely enough, the answer to both these questions is yes. Our intelligence is partly given us at birth, and no amount of special education can make a genius out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in an uninteresting environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and changing surroundings. Thus the limits of a person's intelligence are fixed at birth, but whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.

It is easy to show that intelligence is to some degree something we are born with. The closer the blood relationship between two people, the most closer they are likely to be in intelligence. Thus if we take two unrelated people at random from the population, it is likely that their degrees of intelligence will be completely different. If on the other hand we take two identical(孪生) twins, they will very likely be as intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this early suggests that intelligence depends on birth.

Imagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different environments. We might send one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the work is tiring and uninteresting. We would soon find differences in intelligence developing, and this shows that environment as well as birth plays a part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close connection with each other, but who are not related at all, are likely to have similar degrees of intelligence.

(1)The writer is in favour of the view that man's intelligence is given to him ________.

[ ]

A.at birth

B.through education

C.both at birth and through education

D.neither at birth nor through education

(2)In the second paragraph,“if we take two unrelated people at random from the population…”means“if we ________”.

[ ]

A.pick up any two persons

B.choose two persons who are relatives

C.take out two different persons

D.choose two persons with different intelligence

(3)The example of the twins going to a university and to a factory separately show ________.

[ ]

A.the importance of their intelligence

B.the effect of environment on intelligence

C.the importance of their positions

D.the part that birth plays

(4)The best title of this passage can be ________.

[ ]

A.Dependence on Environment

Recently, a professor of philosophy(哲学)in the United States has written a book called“Money and the Meaning of Life”. He, has discovered that how we deal with money in our day-to-day life has more meaning than we usually think. One of the exercises he asked his students to do is to keep a record of every penny they spend for a week. From the way they spend their money, they can see what they really value in life.

He says our relation with others often becomes clearly defined when money enters the pictures. You might have wonderful friendship with somebody and you think that you are very good friends. But you will know him only when you ask him to lend you some money. If he does, it brings something to the relationship that seems stronger than ever before. Or it can suddenly weaken the relationship if he doesn't. This person may say that he has a certain feeling, but if it is not carried out in the money world, there is something less real about it.

Since money is so important to us, we consider those who possess a lot of it to be very important. The author interviewed some millionaires in researching his book.

Question: What is the most surprising thing you have discovered about being rich, because you are a self-made man?

Answer: The most surprising thing is how people give me so much respect. I am nothing. I don't know much. All I am is rich.

People just have an idea of making more and more money, but what is it for? How much do I need for any given purpose in my life? In his book, the professor uncovered an important need in modern society: to bring back the idea that money is an instrument rather than the end. Money plays an important role in the material world, but expecting money to give happiness may be missing the meaning of life.

(1)According to the first paragraph, people have not realized ________.

[ ]

A.how important money is in their day-to-day life

B.how one spends money shows what is important to him

C.that money is more important than their philosophy of life

D.that their understanding of life is more important than money

(2)The author seems to believe that asking your friend to lend you some money ________.

[ ]

A.is a good way to test your friendship

B.will do harm to your friendship

C.will strengthen your friendship

D.is a good way to break off your friendship

(3)What can we learn about the millionaire from his answer in the interview?

[ ]

A.He does not feel that he is well educated

B.He does not think that he is a very important person

C.He does not think that being rich deserves(值得)so much attention

D.He does not consider himself to be very successful

(4)What does the American professor of philosophy want to explain in his book?

[ ]

A.Money is an end.

B.Money is a means.

C.Money is everything.

D.Money is unimportant.

阅读下列短文, 从所给的四个选项中, 选出最佳答案。

What makes it rain? Rain falls from clouds for the same reason that anything falls to earth. The earth's gravity(引力)pulls it. But every cloud is made of water droplets(微滴)or ice crystals(结晶). Why doesn't rain or snow fall continuously from all clouds? The droplets or ice crystals in clouds are very small. The effect of gravity on them is tiny.

Droplets and ice crystals act like dust in the air which is made visible in the rays of sunlight. To the careless observer, dust seems to act in a totally disorderly way, moving about freely without fixed direction. But in fact dust particles(微粒)are much larger than water droplets and they finally fall. The cloud droplet of ordinary size is only 1/2500 inch in diameter (直径). It is so small that it would take sixteen hours to fall half a mile in perfectly still air, and it does not fall out of moving air at all. Only when the droplet grows to a diameter of 1/125 inch or larger can it fall from the cloud. The ordinary raindrop has a million times as much water as a tiny cloud droplet. The growth of a cloud droplet to a size large enough to fall out is the cause of rain.

   (1)  Why don't all ice crystals in clouds immediately fall to earth?

[    ]

A. They are hardly affected by the force of gravity.

B. The earth's gravity keeps them from falling.

C. The clouds prevent them from falling.

D. The heat from the sun's rays makes them turn into steam.

(2)  What conclusion can we draw from drops of water larger  than 1/120 inch in diameter?

[    ]

A. They fall to the ground slowly.

B. In moving air they fall at a speed of thirty-two miles per    hour

C. In still air they would fall to earth.

D. The earth's gravity has no effect on them.

(3) If air kept perfectly still for forty-eight hours, a cloud droplet would fall ________.

[    ]

A. 1/2 miles

B. 3/2 miles

C. 2 miles

D. 5/2 miles

(4) What is the main topic of this passage?

[    ]

A. Types of droplets

B. Droplets and ice crystals

C. How gravity affects clouds

D. The cause of rain

(5) According to the passage, which of the following is  not true?

[    ]

A. Cloud droplets can fall to earth as dust particles.

B. Though dust particles are very small, we can see them moving in the rays of sunlight.

C. Cloud droplets don't fall at all in moving air.

D. If a cloud droplet grows to a size large enough, it will fall to earth.

If we wanted help, we'd have to move out. The trouble was we didn't have anything at all, and George was in the hospital.

When I knew I needed some help, I went up here to this place called Hub Center where they're supposed to help people. Well, I told this young kid that was working there that we were starving and didn't have the money to pay our rent or buy our medicine. Well, he started writing something down on a slip of paper, and he wrote for the longest time. Then he gave it to me and he said,"Take this paper to 1631 Vine Street and they'll give you a sandwich."said."Thanks for nothing, kid".

Time talks. It speaks more plainly (明白地) than words. Time communicates(交流)in many ways.

Consider the different parts of the day, for example. The time of the day when something is done can give a special meaning to the event. Factory managers in the United States fully realize the importance of an announcement made during the middle of the morning or afternoon that takes everyone away from his work.

In the United States . it is not customary(通常的,习惯的) to telephone someone very early in the morning. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving (刮脸) or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very urgent (紧急的) and requires immediate attention. It is the same with telephone calls made after 11:00 p. m. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he probably thinks it is a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance.

The meanings of time differ in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstanding arises (出现) between people from cultures (文化) that treat time differently . In the United States, people tend (趋向于) to think of time as something fixed in nature, something from which one can not escape. As a rule, .Americans think of time as a road into the future, along which one progresses. The road has many sections (段) , which are to be kept separate… “one thing at a time” . Thus, an American may feel angry when he has made an appointment (约会) with someone and then finds a lot of other things happening at the same time.

Americans look ahead and are concerned(与……有关系) almost entirely with the future. The American idea of the future is limited, however. It is the foreseeable future and not the future of involving (牵连) many centuries. Since time has much different meanings in different cultures, communication is often difficult. We will understand each other a little better if we can keep this fact in mind.

(1) According to the passage, an announcement made during the day in a factory must be very important because ____.

[ ]

A.it interrupts the work of all employees

B.it is made by the manager

C.it makes everyone lose his job

D.it communicates in many ways

(2) In the United States, a phone call made after 11:00 p. m. is considered ________ in the view of the writer.

[ ]

A.as important as one made in the morning

B.impolite since it disturbs the receiver's sleep

C.to be a threat (恐吓) to the receiver's life

D.even more urgent than one made early in the morning.

(3) An .American may feel angry if ________.

[ ]

A.he is to deal with many things at one appointed time

B.people from different cultures misunderstand him

C.he cannot escape from something fixed in nature

D.others do not keep things separate

(4) The expression “the foreseeable future” could be most suitably replaced by ________.

[ ]

A.the future that will not be far away

B.the future that one looks forward to

C.the future toward which one makes progress

D.the future which involves centuries

(5) The writer concludes that people of different countries will understand each other better if ________ .

[ ]

A.they know how to communicate with each other

B.they are concerned with the future

C.they learn the way time communicates

D.they keep in mind that different cultures treat time differently
