阅读下列短文, 从所给的四个选项中, 选出最佳答案。
It isn't strictly true that one half of the world is rich and the other half is poor. It's one third that is very rich and two-thirds that are very poor.
People in the rich countries don't realize the great difference between them and those in the poorer countries. A very simple example is that a dog or a cat in North America eats better than a child in the poorer countries. A fisherman in south America may be catching fish which is processed (加工) into pet food, and his own children are not getting enough to eat for their bodies to develop properly.
Although a lot of the world's natural resources like oil come from these poorer countries, people in the richer countries are probably using sixty times as much of these resources as a person in Asia or Africa. And it's the richer countries that decide what kind of prices they are ready to pay for these resources. And the prices the richer countries get for their own exports (出口货), however, are always rising. So they are getting richer and richer and the poorer countries are getting poorer.
(1) It's ___________ of the world that is very rich and __________ that are very poor.

Though Brazil (巴西) is one of the richest countries in the world, much of it hasn't been developed. It was mainly for this reason that the Brazilian government decided to have a new city built 600 miles northwest of Kio de Janciro. Designed by the great architect (建筑师) Lucio Costa, the new city, Brasilia, replaced Kio de Janciro as the capital of Brazil in 1960. Brasilia has been carefully planned for modern living. Its wide roads, which can take fourteen ways of traffic, have kept away from living areas. Children do not have to cross busy streets to go to school. Housewives can visit shopping centres on foot, for in these specially designed living areas, cars are unnecessary. At first, the government had great difficulty in persuading people to leave Kio and to settle down in Brasilia. Since 1960, however, the population has been growing all the time. Brasilia has made itself the capital of the country. The idea to have the capital moved so far inland will have a great effect on the future of Brazil.

If you ask some people, "How did you learn English so well?" You may get a surprising answer "In my sleep." These are people who have taken part in one of recent experiments to test "Learn-While-Sleep" methods which are now being tried in several countries, and with several subjects, of which English is only one. Specialists say that this "sleep-study" method speeds language learning greatly. They say that the average person can learn two or three times as much during sleep as in the same period during the day—and this does not affect his rest in any way. A word of warning, however: sleep teaching will only strengthen in your mind what you have studied already while you are awake. In an experiment, lessons were broadcast over the radio, Each lesson lasted twelve hours—from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. The first three hours of English grammar and vocabulary were given with the student awake. At 11 p.m. a lullaby (催眠曲)was broadcast to send the student to sleep and for the next three hours the radio whispered the lesson again into his ears. At 2 a.m. a sharp noise was sent over the radio to wake the sleeping student up for a few minutes to review the lesson. The soft songs sent him back to rest again while the radio went on. At 5 a.m. his sleep ended and he had to get through the lesson again for three hours before breakfast.
(1) In the experiments to test "Learn-While-Sleep" _______.
[ ]
A. only English is tried B. not only English is tried
C. many subjects are tried D. only languages are tried
(2) Compared with other methods, the "Learn-While-Sleep" is _____.

(3) In the 4th to 6th hours of the experiment ________.

A. the student was wide awake
B. the student was fast asleep

Time talks. It speaks more plainly (明白地)than words. Time communicates (交流) in many ways.
Consider the different parts of the day, for example. The time of the day when something is done can give a special meaning to the event. Factory managers in the United States fully realize the importance of an announcement made during the middle of the morning or afternoon that takes everyone away from his work.
In the United States, it is not customary (通常的,习惯的) to telephone someone very early in the morning. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving(刮脸) or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very urgent(紧急的) and requires immediate attention. It is the same with telephone calls made after 11:00 p. m. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he probably thinks it is a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates is important.
The meanings of time differ in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstanding arises (出现) between people from cultures(文化) that treat time differently. In the United States, people tend (趋向于) to think of time as something fixed in nature, something from which one can not escape. As a rile, Americans think of time as a road into the future, along which one progresses. The road has many sections(段) , which are to be kept separate…“one thing at a time”. Thus, an American may feel angry when he has made an appointment (约会) with someone and then finds a lot of other things happening at the same time.
Americans look ahead and are concerned(与……有关系)almost entirely with the future. The American idea of the future is limited, however. It is the foreseeable future and not the future of involving(牵连) many centuries.
Since time has much different meanings in different cultures, communication is often difficult. We will understand each other a little better if we can keep this fact in mind.
(1)According to the passage, an announcement made during the day in a factory must be very important because ________.
[ ]
A.it interrupts the work of all employees
B.it is made by the manager
C.it makes everyone lose his job
D.it communicates in many ways
(2)In the United States, a phone call made after 11:00 p. m. is considered ________, in the view of the writer.
[ ]
A.as important as one made in the morning
B.impolite since it disturbs the receiver's sleep
C.to be a threat (恐吓) to the receiver's life
D.even more urgent than one made early in the morning
(3)An American may feel angry if ________.
[ ]
A.he is to deal with many things at one appointed time
B.people from different cultures misunderstand him
C.he cannot escape from something fixed in nature.
D.others do not keep things separate
(4)The expression “the foreseeable future” could be most suitably replaced by ________.
[ ]
A.the future that will not be far away
B.the future that one looks forward to
C.the future toward which one makes progress
D.the future which involves centuries
(5)The writer concludes that people of different countries will understand each other better if ________.
[ ]
A.they know how to communicate with each other
B.they are concerned with the future
C.they learn the way time communicates
D.they keep in mind that different cultures treat time differently
