Early in the 16th century men were trying to reach Asia by travelling west from Europe. In order to find Asia they had to find a way past South America. The man who eventually found the way from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific was Ferdinand Magellan.

Magellan sailed from Seville in August 1519 with five ships and about 280 men. Fourteen months later, after spending the cold winter on the coast of Patagonia, he discovered the channel which is now called Magellan Strait(海峡). 阅读下列短文,从所给的四个选项中,选出最佳答案。

A question often put to specialists on fishes is "How long do fishes live?" Specialists find it difficult to give an exact answer though it seems to be a very simple question. Actually this question is not so simple as it seems. There are thousands of different kinds of fishes, and they are different from one another in size and life-span (寿命). Moreover (此外), it is not easy to find out just how long a fish lives in its natural state.

We can find out how old a fish is by studying its size, but we cannot say how much longer it would have lived if we had not caught it.

We may feed fishes and record their life-span, but we cannot be sure that this is the length of time they would have lived if they had been left alone.

We may make markings to show how fast the fishes grow so that we can calculate (计算) the age of the largest on record, but unless this large fish dies of old age, we are still not in a position to know its natural life-span.

Unlike human beings, fishes do not stop growing when they reach maturity (成年). They continue to grow as long as they live, although the rate of growth slows down in grown-up fishes.

(1) What specialists feel difficult to know is ________.

[ ]

A. the age of fishes

B. the size of fishes

C. the life-span of the fishes he feeds

D. the life-span of fishes living freely

(2) We may know a fish's age by studying __________.

[ ]

A. how heavy it is

B. how big it is

C. its rate of growth

D. the position it lives

(3) Which of the following is true?

[ ]

A. The heavier a fish is, the older it is.

B. If we let a fish alone, we can hardly know its life-span.

C. Old as a fish is, it will keep growing fast before its death.

D. When a man is old, he will grow much more slowly than an old fish.

(4) Which of the following is not true?

[ ]

A. If we feed a fish from its birth to its death, we correctly record its life-span.

B. A fish's weight has nothing to do with its life-span.

C. Human beings stop growing when they have grown up.

D. Specialists can know how fast a fish grows, but they do not know how long it will live.

(5) Which of the following do you think is the best title for this passage?

[ ]

A. How Long Do Fishes Live?

B. Easy or Difficult?

C. The Difference Between Human Beings and Fishes.

D. Specialists and Fishes.

First Aid

First aid is emergency care for a victim of sudden illness or injury until more skillful medical treatment is available. First aid may save a life or improve certain vital signs including pulse, temperature, an unobstructed airway, and breathing. In minor emergencies, first aid may prevent a victim's condition from worsening and provide relief from pain. First aid must be administered as quickly as possible. In the case of the critically injured, a few minutes can make the difference between complete recovery and loss of life.

First-aid measures depend upon a victim's needs and provider's level of knowledge and skill. Knowing what not to do in an emergency is as important as knowing what to do. Improperly moving a person with a neck injury, for example, can lead to permanent spinal injury and paralysis.

Despite the variety of injuries possible, several principles of first aid apply to all emergencies. The first step is to call for professional medical help. The victim, if conscious, should be reassured that medical aid has been requested, and asked for permission to provide any first aid. Next, assess the scene, asking other people or the injured person's family or friends about details of the injury or illness, any care that may have already been given, and preexisting conditions such as diabetes or heart trouble. The victim should be checked for medical bracelet or card that describes special medical conditions. Unless the accident scene becomes unsafe or the victim may suffer further injury, do not move the victim.

First aid requires rapid assessment of victims to determine whether life-threatening conditions exist. One method for evaluating a victim's condition is known by the ABC, which stands for:

  A- Airway:is it open and unobstructed? .

B- Breathing:is the person breathing? Look, listen, and feel for breathing.

C- Circulation:is there a pulse? Is the person bleeding externally? Check skin color and temperature for additional indications of circulation problems.

Once obvious injuries have been evaluated, the injured person's head should be kept in a neutral position in line with the body. If no evidence exists to suggest potential skull or spinal injury, place the injured person in a comfortable position. Positioned on one side, a victim can vomit without choking or obstructing the airway.

(1) It is very important in first aid to________.

[ ]

A.move the injured person from the scene' of accident immediately

B.spend a few minutes for making the difference between recovery and death

C.know what to do and what not to do according to the condition of the victim

D.remove the medical bracelet or card from the victim

(2) One of the following practices is NOT right in the first aid, that is________.

[ ]

A.to check whether the victim is breathing

B.to let the victim lie on one side

C.to telephone a hospital at once

D.to wait patiently for more skillful medical treatment before carrying on first aid

(3) The article implies that the provider of first aid should be especially careful ________.

[ ]

A.in handing the victim only if he learns that the victim has both diabetes and heart trouble

B.in handing the victim if he learns that the victim has diabetes or heart trouble

C.not to move the victim if he finds a medical bracelet on the victim

D.not to move the victim if he finds the accident scene to be unsafe

(4) According to this article, first aid is usually provided by_______.

[ ]

A.professional doctors

B.the victim's family members

C.the victim's friends

D.those people who are not necessarily professional doctors

What do you do if you are hit in the mouth and one of your teeth is knocked out? A dentist may be able to put the tooth back in for you, but you have to get to the dentist first. In the meantime, you have to store the tooth so that it will stay healthy.

The simplest thing to do is to put the tooth back into your mouth, or you could put it in milk. Frank Courts, a dentist at the University of Florida, worked with other researchers to find the safest way of keeping knocked-out teeth. He tried putting teeth into milk, into water, and into cell-culture medium(细胞培养液). He also tried just drying the teeth in the open air. He used teeth that had to be removed from people’s mouths for various reasons. The teeth were put into one of the solutions(溶液)or stored in the air for one hour. Then cells from the root of the teeth were scraped off the teeth. Dr Courts and the others then studied how healthy these cells were.

The cell-culture medium worked best to keep a knocked-out tooth healthy outside the mouth. However, few people keep cell-culture medium handy at home or in school. The next best thing was milk. But Dr Courts said that the best thing of all was to wash the tooth and put it right back into its socket(牙槽)in the mouth. For some people, though, this is just too painful or upsetting. So milk will do, until you get your tooth (and your mouth) to a dentist.

(1) This passage is mainly about ________.

[ ]

A.how a dentist can save a knocked-out tooth

B.how to keep a knocked-out tooth healthy

C.how Dr Courts and other researchers made their experiments

D.how to put a knocked-out tooth back into its socket

(2) Dr Courts tested ________.

[ ]

A.man-made teeth

B.teeth dried in the open air

C.teeth pulled for various reasons

D.teeth put back in their sockets

(3) The best way to keep a knocked-out tooth healthy outside the mouth is to store it _______.

[ ]

A.in cell-culture medium

B.in milk

C.in water

D.in the open air

(4) Milk can be used instead of Call-culture medium to put a knocked-out tooth in because ________.

[ ]

A.milk works better to keep the tooth healthy

B.milk causes less pain

C.cell-culture medium is not usually handy

D.cell-culture medium is more expensive

I hear many parents say that their teenagers(十几岁的少年)are too independent. I wish it were so. At your age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning to stand on your own feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are all taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out bravely on their own, most of them are trying to seize at one another’s hands for safety.

They say they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in music. But the reason for thinking or acting in thus-and-such a way is that the crowd is doing it. They have come out of their cocoon(蚕茧)?--into a larger cocoon.

It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and to go his or her own way. Industry has firmly opened up a teenage market. These days every teenager can learn from newspapers and TV what a teenager should have and be. And many of today’s parents have come to award(奖励)high marks for the popularity of their children. All this adds up to great difficulty for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path.

But the difficulty is worth getting over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical(古典的)music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don’t care to share at once with your classmates. Well, go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come—with the people who respect you for who you are. That’s the only kind of popularity that really counts.

(1) The writer’s purpose in writing this text is to tell ________.

[ ]

A.readers how to be popular in the world

B.teenagers how to learn to decide things for themselves

C.parents bow to control and guide their children

D.people how to understand and respect each other

(2) Teenagers should ________, according to the text.

[ ]

A.rebel against their parents

B.find their real self

C.become different from others in as many ways as possible

D.obey what their parents say

(3) Which of the following is NOT true according to the text?

[ ]

A.People will respect you if you share your thought with others.

B.Some parents are actually keeping their children from finding their own paths.

C.It is not necessarily bad for a teenager to disagree with his or her classmates.

D.Most teenagers say they want to do what they like to, but in fact they are not doing the same.

(4) What does the underlined word“counts”mean?

[ ]

A.To recite or list numbers.

B.To have value or importance.

C.To share some thoughts.

D.To be different.
