阅读下列短文,从所给的四个选项中,选出最佳答案。

Dancing is most likely the oldest art of all and out of it have grown acting and most probably, music, since the first musical sounds must have been the beat of the drum (鼓) and the chants (单音调的) of the dances. Early man first danced to express anger, joy and other strong feelings and when he discovered that if he danced in front of another person that person usually wanted to dance as well, he used dancing as a way of passing on his feelings to others.

For example, if the chief man of a tribe (部落) in the Stone Age wanted to get his followers busy hunting for meat, he told them what he wanted not in words but by dancing. For this dance he dressed himself up to look like an animal, perhaps with horns (角) and tail, and jumped up and down, making animal movements and noises. You may think that the head man was acting a part rather than performing a dance, but acting and dancing are the same thing for primitive (原始 的) people; they dance an act and act a dance.

All the farmers in the area knew about the wild stallion (种马) named Blase, a powerful horse with long hair on his neck. Many of the local (本地的) men tried to catch this rebel but failed each time. A reward was offered for his capture (捕获), dead or alive, because he encouraged other horses to run away with him.

Pete Cook and six other men were determined to catch Blase. Pete used the short telescope to study the wild horse's movements. He made several maps of the area and was sure he could catch Blase this time.

阅读下列短文,从所给的四个选项中,选出最佳答案。

For many years, Hawaii has been a magic name to people who like to travel. People on both sides of the Pacific Ocean, in Japan and in America, dream of seeing these beautiful lands in the mid of the ocean. Their dreams always include at least one scene of a sunset over the ocean. In the tropical (热带的) lands, the sun drops, like a ball of golden fire, into the sea, and it drops so quickly that you can almost see it move. The sun leaves behind a glow that lights the skies in the quiet water.

People often have a quiet, peaceful time—perfect for a leisurely (悠闲的) walk along the water. This scene is not too different from the dramatic (令人神往的) beauty that greeted the first strangers to these islands centuries ago. They were Polynesian people who came from Tahiti in canoes not much bigger than small boats.

They found the beautiful white sand beaches and the waving palm tree, but there were no giant hotels like the ones we see nowadays. The first people came to Hawaii nearly two thousand years ago, but skyscraper hotels were built only in the last 25 years. Now jet airplanes make it possible to fly to Hawaii for a weekend from Tokyo or San Francisco or Los Angeles.

Whenever the people come from, they really want to see the original beauty of Hawaii, which is almost hidden by the tall hotels. They want to see the lovely beaches and the mountains called Diamond Head (金刚山).

An Egyptian king named Psammetichos wished to find out which was the world's oldest language. To gain this information he decided to keep 2 newborn babies apart from others until they began to speak. Because they were kept from grown-ups, they would have no language to imitate. The king made the supposition that the children would speak what was a natural language—which would be oldest. After some months the children were heard to make a sound which was recorded as "bekos". This was found to be very similar (相似) to the Phrygian word for "bread". Therefore Phrygian (a language once spoken in Asia) was considered to be the first language of mankind. At least by King Psammectichos, and, we may suppose, by his court.

阅读下列短文,从所给的四个选项中,选出最佳答案

A green house is a building made of glass which is used for keeping warm when the outside temperature is low. In a similar(类似)way there are several gases in the atmosphere (mixed of gases that surrounds the earth) which trap(捕捉)the heat produced by the sun and prevent it from escaping. These gases are known as greenhouse gases, and the way in which they trap heat in the atmosphere is called the greenhouse effect. This is not simply air pollution. Most of the main greenhouse gases exist naturally in small amounts in our atmosphere. and without them earth would be 30 degrees colder and human life would not exist. In other words, the greenhouse effect is a natural course which is to some degree helpful to us.

The problem is that in the last century and a half, we have been putting too many of these gases into the earth's atmosphere by burning large quantities of coal and oil and by cutting down forest. The rapid increase in greenhouse gases is making the world warmer. The world's temperature has already gone up by half a degree this century, and the sea level has risen by 10 centimeters. If the amount of carbon dioxide(二氧化碳)in the atmosphere doubles, there will probably be a rise in the earth's temperature of between 1 and 4. This may seem a small increase, but it would be enough to cause major changes in geography and agriculture. Large areas of the world would be flooded, and some areas would become dry and unable to produce crops. It is important, too, to consider that there may be a delay of about 30 years in the greenhouse effect. This means that we are probably experiencing only now the effect of the gases put into the atmosphere before the 1960s. Since then, our use of these gases has greatly increased.

(1) According to the passage, we can know "greenhouse effect" means _____.

[ ]

Athe way in which gases are used for keeping plants warm

Ba natural course that is to a certain degree useful to us

Cthe way "greenhouse gases" trap heat on the earth

Dthe whole course in which greenhouse gases prevent heat

(2) If there were no greenhouse effect, ______.

[ ]

Aall plants would not grow on our planets

Bsoil would reduce the temperature by 30 degrees

Cman would breathe the cleaner air

Dboth A and B

(3) Which of the following is not true?

[ ]

ABurning too much coal and oil produces lots of greenhouse gases.

BIt has become warmer on the earth now than in the past.

CGases put into the atmosphere now will affect the earth years later.

DThe temperature in the greenhouse is as high as that in the atmosphere.

(4) This passage mainly deals with ______.

[ ]

Athe concept(概念)and the harm of the green house

Bthe relation between greenhouse gases and man

Cthe concept and change of greenhouse effect

Dthe effect of the rise of the earth's temperature

阅读下列短文,从所给的四个选项中,选出最佳答案

To be a good teacher, you need some of the gifts of a good actor: you must be able to hold the attention and interest of your students; you must be a clear speaker, with a good, strong, pleasing voice which is fully under your control; and you must be able to act what you are teaching, in order to make its meaning clear.

Watch a good teacher, and you will see that he does not sit motionless before his class; he stands the whole time he is teaching; he walks about, using his arms, hands and fingers to help him in his explanations, and his face to express his feeling. Listen to him, and you will hear the loudness, the quality and musical note of his voice always changing according to what he is talking about.

The fact that a good teacher has some of the gifts of a good actor doesn't mean he will indeed be able to act well on the stage, for there are very important differences between the teacher's word and the actor's. The actor has to speak words which he has learnt by heart, he has to repeat exactly the same words each time he plays a certain part, even his movements and the ways in which he uses his voice are usually fixed beforehand. What he has to do is to make all these carefully learnt words and actions seem natural on the stage.

A good teacher works in quite a different way. His audience takes an active part in his play: they ask and answer questions, they obey orders, and if they don't understand something, they say so. The teacher therefore has to suit his act to the needs of his audience, which is his class. He can't learn his part in a stage-play, because their brains couldn't keep discipline; they could not keep strictly to what another had written.

(1) What is the text about?

[ ]

AHow to become a good teacher

BWhat a good teacher should do outside the classroom

CWhat teachers and actors could learn from each other

DThe similarities and differences between a teacher's work and an actor's

(2) The word "gift" in the text means ______.

[ ]

Apresents

Bsomething belonging to a good actor

Ctalents

Dthe way a teacher should act in class

(3) A good teacher ______.

[ ]

Aknows how to hold the interest of his students

Bmust have a good voice

Cknows how to act on the stage

Dstands or sits motionless while teaching

(4) In what way is a teacher's work different from an actor's? ______.

[ ]

AThe teacher must learn everything by heart

BHe knows how to control his voice better than an actor

CHe has to deal with unexpected situations

DHe has to use more facial expressions

(5) The main difference between students in class and a theatre audience is that ______.

[ ]

Astudents can move around in the classroom

Bstudents must keep silent while theatre audience needn't

Cno memory work is needed for the students

Dthe students must take part in their teachers' plays

Nearly all energy comes from the sun.

Electrical energy comes from the sun in a roundabout way, e. g. it can come from the power of water falling down a mountain. The water fell here as rain, and we know the rain is made by the sun's heat evaporating the water on the earth's surface. The light and energy from coal also comes from the sun in a roundabout way. Coal was made by trees and plants. Those trees and plants grew with the help of sunlight, and changed the sun's energy into chemical energy. When we burn coal, some of this energy is set free.

Energy which we use to drive car engines comes from petrol, which also was made with the aid of the sun in a roundabout way. Plants and animals ate the plants died millions of years ago. It was these parts that made petroleum, from which petrol and oil are now used by people.

Dear Editor:

Once upon a time (not so very long ago, either!) industrial goods were made to last forever. If you bought a car or a stove, it was a once-in-a-life time investment (投资). You paid good money for it, and you took care of it. Today, industry has persuaded us that products shouldn't last a long time. It's cheaper to throw them away than it is to repair them. This has led directly to the "throw-away society" which is a great waste of the earth's resources.

Just think of the cars that are traded in daily, just because they are out of fashion (流行式样). Think of the expensive packaging material that is thrown away every time a new object is bought. And we shoppers have to pay for that material! Our industrial society has turned us into spoiled (宠坏的) children. This wastefulness has got us into the trouble we are in now. When we have no resources left, then we'll start to take care of what we have. But why can't we act before this happens? Why can't we go back to being a society in which the prevention of waste is a virtue?

A stamp is just a piece of paper with a picture and some words printed on one side and some glue on the other side. What makes one of these bits of paper worth any money at all? What makes a four cent stamp worth four cents.

When you buy a stamp, you also buy work from the post office. You get a letter delivered. After the stamp has done his job, the post office says it is worthless. You must buy a new one for each letter you send.

To get one of these rare stamps some collectors are willing to pay a great deal of money. They think it is worth something, and that what gives it value. If you collect stamps because they are especially beautiful or tell an interesting story or show all kinds of animals, then those are the ones that have value to you.
