Later that day, I sat19the ornament in my hands. Was I really so important to this child that he had searched for something to give me? Now every year as I20pull a green Christmas ball from my ornament box, I remember the deep influence my students have on me.

My husband and I insisted that our children were old enough to clean their rooms and make their beds. But they thought1. My complaints, even self-justified(自有道理)2, were always landing on3ears. Very often a whole hour’s scolding would end with their4into tears. I felt very frustrated. I realized I needed to5my method of “mothering”.
One day when they were at school, I spent some time tidying their rooms. On their desks, in plain6, I left the cards: “Dear Bill(the other card was7to Sarah), your room was messy this morning and I’m sure you like it clean. Love, the Room Fairy.”8arriving back, the children were9excited to receive the little note from the Room Fairy. The next day, their rooms were fairly tidy. Sure enough, there was another note from the Room Fairy10for them, thanking them for their nice “gift” of a clean room and11asking them to play a certain violin12. Each day, thank-you notes would be written differently to keep the ideas13.
Sometimes the Room Fairy would propose a little14: “If you can finish your homework and go over your lessons before dinner, I’d like to watch a particular television program with you tonight.” Sometimes some colored markers or other little items would be left in15of well-done jobs the day16.
17I can’t remember how long “the Room Fairy” continued leaving her love notes. When they were age appropriate, we used various versions of Post-Its (贴条). The bathroom mirror became the18centre of our home. Appointments, notices about visiting relatives, lesson schedules, and changes in plans could be19.
We all benefited from and20the idea of sharing reminders and daily details of life through notes. I believe the true advantage of the Room Fairy notes survives in our frequent and enjoyable communication.

A thousand years ago Hong Kong was covered by a thick forest like the forests we now find in Malaysia and Thailand. As more and more 1 came to live in Hong Kong, these trees were cut down and burnt. Now there is no forest left, 2 there are still some areas covered with trees. We call these 3.
Elephants, tigers, monkeys and many other animals used to live in the 4 forests of Hong Kong, and there were even crocodiles in the 5 and along the coast. When people came to live in Hong Kong, the animals began to 6 out. Early farmers grew rice and kept pigs and chickens in the valleys.
They 7 the trees and burnt them. They needed fires to keep themselves 8 in the winter, to cook their food, and to keep away from dangerous animals. Elephants quickly disappeared because there was not enough 9 for them. So did most of the wolves, and tigers. Monkeys, squirrels and many other animals soon died out in the same 10.
You might think that there are 11 any animals in Hong Kong, except in the 12. You might think there can’t be any wild animals in such a 13 place with so many cars and buildings. But there is 14 a good deal of countryside in Hong Kong and New Territories, and there are still about thirty-six different kinds of animals living there.
One of the most interesting of Hong Kong’s 15 is the barking deer. They are beautiful little creatures with rich, brown coat and a white patch under the tail. They look like deer but they are much 16. They are less than two feet high. The male barking deer has two small horns but the female has none. They make a 17 rather like a dog barking.
Barking deer live in thick shrub(灌木) country and are very good at 18. They eat grass and shrubs, mainly in the very early morning and late afternoon and evening. This is when you are most likely to see one but you will need to be very quiet and to have very 19eyes. In Hong Kong the barking deer has only one 20 ---- man. Although it is illegal, people hunt and trap these harmless little animals. As a result there are now not many left. There are a few on Hong Kong Island but none in the New Territories.
