A few days ago, I got a letter from a student. In his letter, he told me, “I have this friend at school. She’s one of my good friends but lately she has been1 strange. When I talked to her the other day, she said coldly, ‘Do I look like I care?’ She was being all strange to me. She told me2 she thought I was a bad friend, but she still thinks I am her best friend. I am so confused.”
In my letter in reply, I gave him my advice:
After reading your question, I can understand why you’re confused. It sounds like your relationship with your friend is a little shaky. There could be several reasons for her3. For example, maybe she has a lot on her mind and is4 a few challenges of her own. She may not feel comfortable talking to anyone about them5 and may just need a little time to sort through her own feelings. Or, on the day you talked to her, she could have been having a bad day and didn’t realize she was very cold to you. I could list a few more6for you, but you know,7, the only person who knows why your friend reacted that way is your friend. My8 to you is to tell her how you feel. Let her know she hurt your feelings and ask why on some days she’s nice to you, and on other days she isn’t9 nice. It could be that your friend is making some other new friends at school and is having difficulty10 her old relationships. Whatever her reasons are, you should let her know that you are a unique, caring person who certainly deserves a good friendship at school,11 you wouldn’t have taken the time to write me. If your12 with this person fades a bit, it’s OK, because you will develop may other friendships.

It has been years since I have laid my hand on my father’s shoulder as we have drifted apart (疏远) farther and farther while I was 6 up. That night though, I sensed my father trying to 7 his pain and I wanted him to be able to let it out. We all have cried over what happened except him.
The simple touch and my words, “Dad, it’s not your 8”, broke my father’s dam(水闸). In the darkness, he began to cry. I 9 his shoulders shaking as he whispered, “10 did I go wrong? All I ever wanted was for my children to grow up right. Why couldn’t your sister wait?”

Children find meanings in their old family tales.
When Stephen Guyer’s three children were growing up, he told them stories about how his grandfather, a banker,1all in the 1930s, but did not lose sight of what he valued most. In one of the darkest times2his strong-minded grandfather was nearly3, he loaded his family into the car and4them to see family members in Canada with a5, “there are more important things in life than money”.
The6took on a new meaning recently when Mr. Guyer downsized to7house from a more expensive and comfortable one. He was8 that his children, a daughter, 15, and twins, 22, would be upset. To his surprise, they weren’t.9 , their reaction echoed (共鸣) their great-grandfather’s.What they10was how warm the people were in the house and how11of their heart was accessible.
Many parents are finding that family stories have surprising power to help children
12 hard times. Storytelling experts say the phenomenon reflects a growing13in telling tales, evidenced by a rise in storytelling events and festivals.
A university14of 65 families with children aged from 14 to 16 found kids’ ability to15parents’ stories was linked to a lower rate of anger and anxiety.
The16is telling the stories in a way children can17. We’re not talking here about the kind of story that18, “ When I was a kid, I walked to school every day uphill both ways, barefoot in the snow.” Instead, we should choose a story suited to the child’s19, and make eye contact (接触) to create “a personal experience”. We don’t have to tell children20 they should take from the story and what the moral is.

I could10that this whole experience was11to him. But I somehow knew it wouldn’t be right to12him, either. It was going to take more time and13.
The next day, I was leading camp songs for the campers. They eagerly participated. But the boy was just sitting alone,14out the window.
That evening at our nightly staff meeting, I made my15about him known. I asked them to pay special attention and spend time with him16they could.
The days flew by fast. When the “last dance” came, surprisingly, the boy from under the tree was now a shirtless dancing17. He owned the dance floor 18meaningful time with others. I couldn’t’ believe it was him.
In that instant, I realized how easy it is to give a bit of 19every day. You may never know how much each gesture may mean to someone else. I tell this story as20as I can, and I advise others to look out for their own “boy under the tree.”
