　　People in the United States honor their parents with two special days：Mother’s Day, on the second Sunday in May, and Father’s Day, on the third Sunday in June．These days are set aside to show love and respect for parents．They raise their children and educate them to be responsible citizens．They give love and care．These two days offer an opportunity to think about the changing roles of mothers and fathers．More mothers now work outside the home．More fathers must help with child-care．

　　These two special days are celebrated in many different ways．On Mother’s Day people wear carnations．A red one symbolizes a living mother．A white one shows that the mother is dead．Many people attend religious services to honor parents．It is also a day when people whose parents are dead visit the cemetery(公墓)．On these days families get together at home, as well as in restaurants．They often have outdoor barbecues for Father’s Day．These are days of fun and good feelings and memories．

　　Another tradition is to give cards and gifts．Children make them in school．Many people make their own presents．These are valued more than the ones bought in stores．It is not the value of the gift that is important, but it is“the thought that counts”．Greeting card stores, florists, candy makers, bakeries, telephone companies and stores do lots of business during these holidays．

　　The number of speakers of English in Shakespeare’s time is estimated(估计)to have been about five million．Today it is estimated that some 260 million people speak it as a native language, mainly in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand．In addition to the standard varieties of English found in these areas, there are a great many regional and social varieties of the language as well as various levels of usage that are employed both in its spoken and written forms．

　　In fact, it is impossible to estimate the number of people in the world who have acquired an adequate(足够的)working knowledge of English in addition to their own languages．The purpose for English learning and the situations in which such learning takes place are so varied that it is difficult to explain and still more difficult to judge what forms adequate working knowledge for each situation．

　　The main reason for the widespread demand for English is its present-day importance as a world language．Besides serving the indefinite needs of its native speakers, English is a language in which some of important works in science, technology, and other fields are being produced, and not always by native speakers．It is widely used for such purposes as meteorological and airport communications, international conferences and the spread of information over the radio and television networks of many nations．It is a language of wider communication for a number of developing countries, especially former British colonies．Many of these countries have multilingual populations and need a language for internal communication in such matters as government, commerce, industry, law and education as well as for international communication and for entrance to the scientific and technological developments in the West．

　　The Awareness Weeks have become a regular part of Britain’s cultural landscapes over the past few years．They started back in 1957, when one charity, Christian Aid, decided to make all its money raise efforts on one time of year．It was thought that by doing this they would get more publicity for their cause．

　　They were right．And soon other charities and campaign groups followed them．These days, most donations to charity are not collected in the streets．So instead of just asking for money, charities prefer to spend their time“raising awareness”－spreading knowledge of the work they do or the cause they support．They also compete with businesses and trade groups who use awareness weeks as marketing campaigns for their products．

　　There are now 500 awareness weeks held every year in the UK．No week goes by without one group or another trying to make the British public aware of something, with most held in May or October．

　　The danger with all these awareness weeks is that people start to become cynical．Taking National Smile Week seems like a great idea．Let’s all make each other’s life a little bit happier with a friendly smile．But really it’s just a group of dentists and cosmetics companies trying to sell us toothpaste．It’s enough to make you want to start National Forget About It Week．

　　“People feel that many awareness campaigns are just marketing exercises,”Says Mrs．Ormiston, who edits the Awareness Campaign Register, a news letter which encourages people who run Awareness Weeks to become more aware of each other．But 90 percent of campaigns are run by traditional charities or not for groups to make money．

　　“There’s still no official group for awareness campaigns．”Says Mrs．Ormiston．,“People can do what they like, whatever the size of their budgets or their public relationmachines allow．”

　　This situation has led to calls for laws to stop real charities having their efforts overshadowed by marketing campaigns．This could be done by making the two groups hold their weeks at differenttimes or stopping businesses runningimitation charity campaigns．

　　But there is another way．Maybe it’s time for the National Weak Awareness Week, especially for people whose awareness of the Awareness Weeks is weak．

　　There are three branches of medicine．One is called“doctor medicine”or“scientific medicine”．Scientific doctors try to observe sickness, look for logical patterns, and then find out how the human body works．From there they figure out what treatments may work．This kind of medicine is believed to date from the 4th century BC．Although nowadays it is successful, in the ancient world this approach(方法)probably did not cure many patients．

　　The second kind of medicine is called“natural medicine”or“folk medicine”, in which less educated people try to cure sickness with various herbs(药草)．These folk healers also use observation and logic, but they are not so aware of it．They try things until they find something that seems to work, and then they keep doing that．Folk medicine existed long before the development of scientific medicine and was more successful in ancient times than doctor medicine．

　　The third kind is called“health spas”or“faith cure”．Sometimes this may be as simple as touching the holy(神圣的)man and being immediately cured．Other times, a magician may make you a magic charm(护身符), or say a spell(咒语), to cure you．Some religious groups organized special healing shrines for the sick．In these places people rest, get plenty of sleep, eat healthy food, drink water instead of wine, and exercise in various ways．They also talk to the priests(教士)and pray to the gods．If you have been feeling depressed or you have been working too hard, going to these places may be just the right thing to make you feel better．

　　I always felt sorry for the people in wheelchairs．Some people, old and weak, cannot get around by themselves．Others seem perfectly healthy, dressed in business suits．But whenever I saw someone in a wheelchair, I only saw a disability, not a person．

　　Then I fainted at Euro Disney due to low blood pressure．This was the first time I had ever fainted, and my parents said that I must rest for a while after First Aid．I agreed to take it easy but, as I stepped toward the door, I saw my dad pushing a wheelchair in my direction!Feeling the color burn my cheeks, I asked him to wheel that thing right back to where he found it．

　　I could not believe this was happening to me．Wheelchairs were fine for other people but not for me, as my father wheeled me out into the main street, people immediately began to treat me differently．

　　Little kids ran in front of me, forcing my father to stop the wheel chair suddenly．Bitterness set in as I was thrown back and forth．“Stupid kids－they have perfectly good legs．Why can’t they watch where they are going?”I thought．People stared down at me, pity in their eyes．Then they would look away, maybe because they thought the sooner they forgot me the better．

　　“I’ m just like you!”I wanted to scream．“The only difference is you’ve got legs, and I have wheels．”

　　People in wheelchairs are not stupid．They see every look and hear each word．Looking out at the faces, I finally understood; I was once just like them．I treated people in wheelchairs exactly the way they did not want to be treated．I realized it is some of us with two healthy legs who are truly disabled．

　　The impression you make at the beginning of an interview is very important．Employers often decide to hire someone in the first three minutes of the interview．They judge you by your appearance, attitude(态度)and manners．A friendly smile when you walk into the room is important．A smile shows a confident(自信的)and positive attitude．

　　When you introduce yourself, make eyes contact with the interviewer．Some interviewers offer a handshake．Others don’t．Try to be as natural as possible．But pay attention to your body language．The way you sit, walk, gesture, use your voice and show feeling on your face are all parts of your body language．It makes the interviewer know how you feel about yourself and the situation you are in．Are you feeling positive about yourself?Your abilities?Your interest in the job?

　　Speak clearly and loudly enough．Show interest and enthusiasm in your voice．When you speak, look at the interviewer．Also don’t say negative things about yourself, or former employers．

　　Listen to questions carefully．If you don’ t understand a question, ask the interviewer to repeat or explain．

　　“I’m sorry, but I didn’t catch that．”

　　“I’m not sure exactly what you mean．”

　　Almost everyone is nervous in a job interview．Interviewers know that．They don’t expect you to be totally calm and relaxed．But they expect you to try to control your nervousness．They expect you to show confidence in your ability to do the job．

　　At the end of the interview, thank the interviewer for her or him．It’ s a good idea to send a short thank-you letter right after the interview, or deliver it by hand．

　　Phone the company if you have not heard anything after one week．Ask if they have make a decision about the job．
