No one can avoid being influenced by advertisements.Much as we may pride ourselves on our good taste, we are no longer free to choose the things we want, for advertising exerts a subtle(巧妙的)influence on us.In their efforts to persuade us to buy this or that product, advertisers have made a close study of human nature and have classified all our little weaknesses.

Advertisers discovered years ago that all of us love to get something for nothing. An advertisement which begins with the magic word FREE can rarely go wrong. These days, advertisers not only offer free samples but free cars, free houses, and free trips round the world as well. They devise hundreds of competitions which will enable us to win huge sums of money.Radio and television have made it possible for advertisers to capture the attention of millions of people in this way.

During a radio program, a company of biscuit manufacturers once asked listeners to bake biscuits and send them to their factory. They offered to pay $10 a pound for the biggest biscuit baked by a listener. The response to this competition was tremendous. Before long, biscuits of all shapes and sizes began arriving at the factory. One lady brought in a biscuit on a wheelbarrow. It weighed nearly 500 pounds.A little later, a man came along with a biscuit which occupied the whole boot of his car.All the biscuits that were sent were carefully weighed. The largest was 713 pounds. It seemed certain that this would win the prize. But just before the competition closed, a lorry arrived at the factory with a truly colossal biscuit which weighed 2400 pounds. It had been baked by a college student who had used over 1000 pounds of flour, 800 pounds of sugar, 200 pounds of fat, and 400 pounds of various other ingredients. It was so heavy that a crane had to be used to remove it from the lorry. The manufacturers had to pay more money than they had anticipated, for they bought the biscuit from the student for $24 000.

2.________

By now the Port of Shanghai has established maritime(航海的)trade relations with more than 400 ports in over 160 countries and regions in the world, with 21 international regular lines starting from the port on over 100 voyages per month directly to North America, Europe, Australia, the Persian Gulf, the Mediterranean as well as Southeast and Northeast Asia and so on.

Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.

(阅读短文并为每段选择一个合适的标题,其中一项是多余的。)

A.Ways to beautify eyes

B.Proper use of eye contact(接触)

C.Techniques of sending eye signals

D.Colours of people’s eyes

E.Functions of different parts of the eye

F.Variety of messages conveyed(传递)through eyes

1.

The coloured part of the eye is called the iris(虹膜).There are three basic eye colours-brown, blue and green.A few albino people have red or pink eyes, but these are very rare. Many people believe that blue eyes are more delicate(敏感的)than brown eyes.In fact they are just as tough as brown eyes, although they are more sensitive to light.

2.

We only see part of the eyeball, although the whole eye is as big as a table tennis ball.Light enters the eye through the pupil(瞳仁)and passes through the lens(晶状体).The lens focuses the light onto the retina(视网膜)at the back of the eye.The retina sends the signal to the brain along the optic nerve(神经).The image on the retina is actually upside-down, but the brain corrects it.As we get older our eyesight becomes worse. This happens because the lens isn’t as flexible(柔韧的)as when we are young and the eye muscles are weaker.

3.

Our eyes are the most important of our five senses. We receive 80% of our information about the world through our eyes.We also send signals to other people with our eyes. Some eye signals are unconscious(无意识的).When we look at something nice, our pupils get bigger. But when we don’t like something, they become smaller. We cry when we are unhappy and sometimes when we are very happy. But we can also control some eye signals. For example, we can wink(眨眼)at someone or raise an eyebrow(眉毛).Sunglasses make someone appear mysterious or dangerous, because they hide that eyes and so we can’t see the signals.

4.

We find large eyes more attractive.Children have large eyes in proportion(比例)to their heads.Cartoon characters always have large eyes, too.We can’t actually change our eyes, but we can make them look bigger with make-up.Eye make-up isn’t new.Pictures in the Pyramids show that the ancient Egyptians both men and women used it.False eyelashes can make eyelashes longer.Eye shadow on the eyelids(眼睑)can make the eyes look bigger and more dramatic.Glasses can also make eyes look bigger.

5.

We do not normally look into someone’s eyes for long, especially when they are very close.Eye contact can be very threatening, so people only do it when they want to threaten someone. It is also very intimate(私人的).This is why lovers gaze into each other’s eyes. It’s also why people don’t look at each other in lifts.

The existence of Santa Claus can be proved in five ways.

The first and most obvious way is ________.It is certain and evident(显然的)to our senses, that in the world some things are Christmas trees. Now no pine tree becomes a Christmas tree unless it is trimmed(修剪).Now to be trimmed means to receive ornaments(装饰物)from another. But this cannot go on to infinity in the trimming of Christmas trees. One must come to some first untrimmed trimmer; and this everyone understands to be Santa Claus.

The second way is ________.We see that in the world that Christmas gifts are given and received.Whoever, then, gives Christmas gifts either receives them from another or makes them in his workshop. If, however, no one makes Christmas gifts in his workshop, they are not given nor received. Therefore it is necessary to posit(安置) some first giver of Christmas gifts, who everyone calls Santa Claus.

The third way is ________.At all stores we see things of plastic that represent Santa Claus. These things are of such a quality that they are representations according to Santa himself or according to other images of him. But, it is not possible to proceed to infinity in images. Therefore, it is necessary to posit something which is like Santa Claus and hence Santa Claus exists.

The fourth way is ________.Indeed, in this world, among men there are some of more and some of less Christmas spirit. But“more”and“less”is said of diverse things according as they resemble in their diverse ways something which is the“maximum”.Therefore there must be something which has the most Christmas spirit, and this we call Santa Claus.

The fifth way is ________.When Christmas day approaches, we see from their being good always or frequently that children, who lack understanding, are moved because of an end.But children would not be good because of the Nativity of Christ unless there were someone who strengthened them so that they were good. And this someone is known by all to be Santa Claus.

A.taken from the grades which are found in Christmas spirit

B.taken from the food people eat at Christmas Day

C.taken from the nature of Christmas gifts

D.taken from the behavior of children

E.taken from Christmas trees

Some people have the feeling that nothing can be done about their poor reading ability (能力). They feel hopeless about it. Can you learn to read better, or must you agree that nothing can be done about it?

To be sure, people are different. You cannot expect to do everything as well as certain other people do. If all the students in a class tried out for basketball, some would be very good players; others would be very poor; and many would be in between. But even the very poor players can become much better players if they are guided in the right way, and with plenty of practice. It is the same with reading. Some seem to enjoy reading and to read well without any special help. Others find reading a slow and tiring job. In between, there are all degrees of reading ability.

Many experiments have shown that just about every poor reader can improve his reading ability. In these experiments, the poor readers were given tests of reading ability. After some of the causes of their poor reading were discovered, they were given special instruction and practice in reading. After a few months, another test of the same kind was given. In nearly all cases, these people had raised their reading scores.

(1) With the example of basketball players, the author shows ________.

[ ]

A.why certain people are poor readers

B.that there are differences in people's abilities

C.why some people are good basketball players

D.that good basketball players can be good readers

(2) To improve their reading ability, people should ________.

[ ]

A.work long and hard

B.take different forms of tests

C.have special help and practice

D.try different reading materials

(3) The experiments mentioned in the text show that ________.

[ ]

A.good readers seem to enjoy reading

B.almost all poor readers can make progress

C.causes of poor reading are difficult to find out

D.tests help people improve their reading ability
