　　The Taj Mahal(泰姬陵)is a love story, a sad and beautiful one．If it didn’t exist, we would easily imagine that the story of its construction was simply a fairy tale．Three hundred years ago, there lived an Indian emperor called Shah Jahan．His wife was a beautiful and bright woman whom he loved greatly．Her title was Mumtazl Mahan：its shortened form Taj Mahan means“pride of the palace”．In the year 1630 this beloved wife of the emperor died．He was so brokenhearted that he thought of giving up his throne．He decided out of his love for his wife, to build her the most beautiful tomb that had ever been seen．

　　He summoned the best artists and architects from India, Turkey, Persia and Arabia and finally, the design was complete．It took more than twenty thousand men working over a period of 18 years to build the Taj Mahan, one of the most beautiful building in the world．

　　The building itself stands on a marble．Platform 29 meters square and 6～7 meters high．Towers rise from each of the four comers．The Taj itself soars another 61 meters into the air．It is a eight-sided building made of white marble．

　　The emperor planned to build an identical tomb of black marble for himself on the other side of the river connected by a silver bridge．However his son put him into a prison in the palace before he could finish, and for the rest of his life, he could only gaze across river at the tomb of his beloved wife．

Doctor and Robber

　　One night about nine o’clock，Dr．Eyck, a surgeon(外科医生), had a phone call from Dr．Haydon at the hospital in Clens Falls．The surgeon was asked to go there at once to operate on a very sick boy who shot himself while playing with a gun．

　　The doctor was soon on his way to Clens Falls．It was 60 miles away．And it was snowing heavily in the city．The surgeon thought he could get there before 12 o’clock．

　　A few minutes later，the doctor was stopped by a man in an old black coat．Gun in hand，the man ordered the doctor to get out．Then the man drove the car down the road，leaving the doctor in the falling snow．

　　It was after two o’clock in the morning when the doctor arrived at the hospital in Clens Falls．

　　Dr．Haydon told him that the boy had died an hour before．

　　The two doctors walked by the door of the hospital waiting room．There sat the man in the old black coat with his head in his hands．

　　“MR．Cunningham,”said Dr．Haydon to the man,“This is Dr．Eyck．He is the surgeon who came all the way from Albany to save your boy.”

　　Skin-diving(潜泳)is a new sport today．This sport takes you into a wonderful new world．It is like a visit to the moon．When you are under water，it is easy for you to climb big rocks because you are no longer heavy．

　　Here，under water，everything is blue and green．During the day，there is plenty of light．When fish swim nearby，you can catch them with your hands．

　　When you have tanks(罐)of air on your back，you can stay in deep water for a long time．But you must be careful when you dive in deep water．

　　To catch fish is one of the most interesting parts of this sport．Besides，there are more uses for skin-diving．You can clean ships without taking them out of water．You can get many things from the deep sea．

　　What makes a person a scientist?Does he have ways or tools of learning that are different from those of others?The answer is“No”．It is not a tool a scientist uses but how he uses these tools that makes him a scientist．You will probably agree that knowing how to use a power is important to a carpenter．You will probably agree, too, that knowing how to investigate, how to discover information, is important to everyone．The scientist, however, goes one step further： he must be sure that he has a reasonable answer to his question into a large set of ideas about how the world works．

　　The scientist’s knowledge must be exact．There is no room for half right or right just half the time．He must be as nearly right as the conditions permit．What works under one set of conditions at one time must work under the same conditions at other times．If the conditions are different, any change file scientist observes in a demonstration must be explained by the change in the conditions．

　　This is one reason that investigations are important in science．Albert Einstein, who developed the theory of relativity, arrived at this theory through mathematics The accuracy of his mathematics was later tested through investigation．Einstein’s ideas are shown to be correct．A scientist uses many tools for measurements．Then the measurements are used to make mathematical calculations that may test his investigations．

　　School was over and I was tired．I sat at the front of the school bus．

　　Janie, the driver, always tries to break the uncomfortable atmosphere(气氛)by talking．I try to listen politely, but usually I’m too busy thinking about my day．On this day, however, her talk was worth listening to．

　　“My father’s ill,”she said to no one in particular(特别地)．I could see worry in her eyes．I had never seen her like this before．She always meets students with a smile．

　　With a sudden chance of interest, I asked,“What’s wrong with him?”

　　With her eyes wet and her voice unusual, she answered,“Heart trouble.”Her eyes lowered as she continued,“I’ve already lost my mum, so I don’t think I can stand losing him.”I couldn’t answer．My heart ached for her．

　　I sat on the seat thinking of the great pain my own mother was thrown into when her father died．

　　I saw how hard it was, and still is, for her．I wouldn’t want anyone to go through that．

　　Suddenly I realized Janie wasn’t only a bus driver, which was just her job．She had a whole world of family and cares too．

　　I shouldn’t have been so selfish．I paid no attention to Janie because she was a bus driver．I had judged(判断)her by her job and brushed her off as unimportant．

　　I shouldn’t have been so selfish and self-centered．

　　Understanding people is an art．

　　An Indian boy ran fast from a village in Mexico．In his hand, he carried some fish．Only a few minutes before, the fish had been caught in the river．Another boy was waiting to take over these fish and to run on, since the first boy was tired．And so from one quick runner to another, fresh fish were rushed from the river to the dinner table of the King．

　　Speed is important in transporting fish and much other fresh food．Some fresh food like fish must reach the market and the dinner table as quickly as possible．But, now planes, trucks and ships have taken the place of those running boys．

　　Planes are the fastest way to transport food．They are useful in carrying food to people that“could not be reached in other ways”．For example, there was an earthquake and the people could not be reached by trains and trucks．The people would have had nothing to eat if no planes had been used to transport food to them．But there is a disadvantage in using planes; air transport is usually the most expensive way of carrying food．And so within a country food is usually transported by trucks and trains, while from country to country food is usually transported by ships．

　　I was telling my boy Sonny the story of the hare and the tortoise．At the end I said“Sonny remember：slow and steady wins the race．Don’t you think there’s something to learn from the tortoise？”He opened his eyes wide．“Do you mean next when I’m entering for the 60-metre race I should wish that Billy and Tony and Sandy would all fall asleep half-way?”

　　I was shocked．“But the tortoise didn’t wish the hare would fall asleep!”

　　“He must have wished that,”Sonny said．“Otherwise how could he be so stupid as to race with the hare？He knew very well the hare ran a hundred times faster than he time if did.”“He didn’t have such a wish,”I insisted．“How won the race by perseverance,(毅力),by pushing on steadily．”

　　Sonny thought for a while．“That’s a lie,”he said．“He won it because he was lucky．If the hare hadn’t happened to fall asleep, the tortoise would never have won the race．He could be as steady, as you like, or a hundred times steadier, but he’d never have won the race．That’s for sure．”

　　I gave up．Today’s children are not like what we used to be．They’re just hopeless．

　　In Britain in the 1890s there was a postcard“craze”．People formed clubs and collected and exchanged postcards Even Queen Victoria had her own private collection．When Edward was the king, the British had a cheap and good postal system, If anyone wanted to tell a friend that they were coming for tea in the afternoon, they would send a postcard in the morning．“Drop me a card”was as common then as“give me a ring”as now．

　　In 1902 an important step was taken．The government said that haft of the side that was used for the address on the postcard could be used for messages, and the whole of the other side could be used for a picture．It was then that the simple postcard, as we know now, was created．
