Animals seem to have the sense to eat when they are hungry and they do not eat more than their bodies need. It has been proved that rats will, when given a choice over a period of time, prefer water with vitamins to water without vitamins, even though there is no difference in taste or smell between the two water bottles. When a fragrant flavor was added to the vitamin-enriched fluid(流体), the rats did seem to develop a taste for it and kept drinking it. After the vitamins were changed to the clear water in time, however, they broke the habit and went back to where the necessary vitamins were.

In a classic experiment, babies of 6 to 12 months old were placed in a cafeteria(自助餐厅)feeding arrangement, with a wide choice of baby food before them. They were given whatever food they pointed to or appeared interested in. We are told that at first they showed some unusual eating patterns, but that over a period of time they managed to choose a well balanced diet.

So in choosing food, rats and babies do seem to know and act on what's best for them.

Obviously, there is a kind of “body wisdom”, which humans soon lose. Most of us do not eat as wisely as we could. Many of our food preferences are culturally determined and influenced by long established habits. Some people eat foxes, dogs and blackbirds, while we eat cows and pigs.

So what people eat and how much they eat seems to be greatly influenced by what is going on around them.

(1) In the experiment on rats, a fragrant flavor was added to the rats' drinking water to ________.

[ ]

A.encourage rats to drink vitamin-enriched water

B.find out rats' preference in flavor

C.test whether rats know which drink is good for them

D.demonstrate that vitamins are tasteless

(2) The expression of the habit refers to drinking water which________.

[ ]

A.has no smell
B.is tasteless
C.has vitamins
D.is flavored

(3) As far as their eating habits are concerned, babies and rats are similar in that ________.

[ ]

A.both have the wisdom to choose a balanced diet

B.both prefer flavored food and drink

C.both have the same eating patterns

D.both develop a taste for the same kind of flavors

(4) In the classic experiment mentioned in the second paragraph, babies were ________.

[ ]

A.given many choices of drinks

B.provided with various kinds of baby food

C.placed and fed in a cafeteria

D.trained to select a balanced diet

(5) According to the passage, adult's eating habits differ from those of babies because ________.

[ ]

A.adults know better than babies what kinds of food are good for their health

B.adults usually can't resist the temptation of various delicious foods

C.adults' eating habits are closely related to the social and cultural customs

D.adults have more choices of food than babies in eating patterns

George Stephenson's father was a stoker(司炉)of a coal engine near Newcastleupon-Tyne in England. When George was fourteen he became his father's assistant at a shilling(先令)a day. He loved engines and spent all his spare time studying them. That was in 1795. And in those days all steam engines were stationary(不动的). They were used to pull trucks along rails with a chain or rope.

In 1804, Richard Trevithick built an engine on wheels, and several other engineers built locomotives(火车头), as they were called, each one trying to make a better machine than the others. George Stephenson set himself to build a locomotive.

Stephenson built his first locomotive in 1814, and he kept on trying to improve it. When the first public railway was opened between Stochton and Darlington in 1825, it was his engine, called Locomotion, that pulled the first goods train in the world, with a few passengers on board.

Stephenson's most famous engine was The Rocket, which his son Robert helped to design. In 1929, a prize of 500 pounds was offered to the designer of the best locomotive. Five engines took part in the tests and The Rocket proved to be the best in every way. It astonished everyone by pulling a train at the wonderful speed of 30 miles an hour. With Robert, George Stephenson became the leading railway engineer in the world both for building engines and making railways. Engines had interesting names in those days, and a very famous one was called Puffing Billy.

I still remember--my hands and my fingernails still remember--what used to be prepared for us on our return to school from the holidays. The school yard would be covered with fallen leaves, lying around here and there in piles. In some places there were even more than just piles of them; it would be like a muddy sea of leaves.

“Get that all swept up!” the headmaster would tell us. “I want the whole place cleaned up, at once !”

At once! There was enough work there, very hard work, too, to last for a week. Especially since the only tools with which we were provided were our hands, our fingers, and our nails.

“Now see that it's done properly, and be quick about it,” the headmaster would say to the other pupils, “or you'll have to answer for it!”

So at an order from the older boys we would set to work. If the work was not going as quickly as the headmaster expected, the big boys, instead of giving us a helping hand, used to find it simpler to beat us with branches pulled from the trees.

In order to avoid these blows, we used to bribe our“kings” with the cakes or other good food which we used to bring for our midday meal. And if we happened to have any money on us, the money would change hands at once. If we did not do this, the blows were doubled. They would hit us so badly that even a dumb person would have realized we were being beaten not to make us work harder, but to make us obey. Thus we would be only too glad to give up our food and money.

Occasionally, one of us worn out by such cruel beating would have the courage to complain(抱怨)to the headmaster. He would, of course, be very angry, but the punishment the older boys received was always very small nothing compared with what they had done to us. And the fact is that however much we complained, our situation did not improve in the slightest.

(1) The writer says: “my hands and my fingernails still remember” because ________.

[ ]

A.his hands and fingers bear the sense of memory

B.he could never forget his headmaster

C.he suffered a lot from the hard work

D.he would remember his school life forever

(2) The older boys beat the younger ones extremely hard because ________.

[ ]

A.they wanted to make the younger work quickly and properly

B.they were too lazy to work themselves

C.they knew this would make the younger offer bribes

D.they knew the headmaster would do no punishment to them

(3) When the younger boys complain to the headmaster ________.

[ ]

A.it made no difference to them

B.it only made the matter worse

C.he would become very angry with them

D.he gave the older punishing blows

(4) Which do you think can be the best title for this passage?

[ ]

A.Hateful Older Boys

B.What a Headmaster

C.Wrong Use of Power

D.Hard Days at School

Education in the United States is compulsory for children up to about the age of sixteen. Most young people stay in school longer than that. Most graduate from high school at the age of 17 or 18.

Almost half of these high school graduates continue their education at a college or university. Education for most young people in this country is free up to the time they graduate from high school. There are private schools, but most parents send their children to public schools, where students do not pay tuition. When young people go to college, however they must pay tuition at a public university or a private university. University costs are going up a lot: private universities have become very expensive because the government does not help the private schools.

Who pays: The parents of children in college may have to pay more, or often the students may have to find jobs. These students have to worry about assignments and grades and also about their jobs. If they work too much at their jobs they may be absent from class or miss assignments or make too many errors on tests. They may even fail their courses and have to leave the university.

For many students, the problem of getting an education is not just a problem of homework and exams. They also have to make money to pay for tuition. And professors don't teach them how to do that!

CATV is a short way of saying“community antenna(共用天线)television”. But “cable television”(有线电视)is the term most people use. Cable television allows viewers to receive TV programs that they cannot pick up with their regular antennas.

Television signals(信号)do not follow the curve(曲线)of the earth. They travel in straight lines in all directions. Signals from a TV station move toward the horizon(水平线)and then go into space. If you live a few miles from a TV station you may get a good picture on your set. But if you live more than 50 miles from a station, you may not get any pictures at all.

CATV began in 1948. People in places far from TV stations shared the cost of putting up high antennas. A community antenna was usually placed on a hill, a mountain or on a high tower. The antenna picked up TV signals and fed them into a small local station. From the station, thick wires called cable ran out to nearby homes. Each person using the cable paid a monthly charge.

CATV worked well, and soon new uses were found for it. Local stations could feed programs into empty channels that were not in use. People along the cable could have local news, weather report, and farm and school news at no extra charge.

Today, cable television has moved onto cities. It brings in extra programs that city viewers with regular antennas cannot see. It is also used in many classrooms throughout the country.

(1)From the first paragraph we know that ________.

[ ]

A.it is free of charge

B.it can provide more programs

C.it provides all TV users good pictures

D.TV sets with regular antenna can also have a good reception through CATV

(4)On the whole, this passage is about ________.

[ ]

A.how to put up high antennas

B.a way of picking up better TV pro-grams

C.how to use the empty channels

D.the way that TV signals are sent

Life gets noisier every day and very few people can be free from noise of some kind or another. No matter where you live--in the middle of a modern city or a far-away village--the chances are that you will be disturbed by jet planes, transistor radios, oil-powered engines, etc. We seem to be getting used to noise, too. Some people feel quite lonely without background music while they are working.

Scientific tests have shown that total silence can be a very frightening experience for a human being. However, some people enjoy listening to pop music which is very loud, and this can do harm to their eardrums(耳膜). The noise level in some discos is far above the usual safety level for heavy industrial areas.

One recent report about noise and concentra-tion(注意力)suggested that although a lot of people say that any noise disturbs their concent-ration, what really influences the ability to concentrate is a change in the level of noise. It goes on to say that a background noise which doesn't change too much(music, for example)may even help to concentrate.

(1)According to this passage, the noise pollution ________.

[ ]

A.has become the worst in the country-side

B.has become better in big cities

C.has spread from cities to villages

D.has been controlled in modern cities

(2)Some people have their hearing harmed ________.

[ ]

A.while listening to very loud pop music

B.in complete silence

C.when speaking loudly

D.while watching TV

(3)Which of the following isn't included among the things causing noise?

[ ]

A.Bicycles.

B.Motorcycles.

C.Electric engines.

D.Jet planes.

(4)Scientists have discovered that what prevents people from concentrating on something is ________.

[ ]

A.all kinds of noise

B.changes in the level of noise

C.background noise

D.popular music
