阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并将答案填在答卷上。

A

It was four days before Christmas. The spirit of the season hadn’t yet caught up with me, even though cars packed the parking lot of our local store.

Inside the store, it was worse. Shopping carts and last minute shoppers jammed the aisles(过道). My list contained names of several people who claimed they wanted nothing but I knew their feelings would be hurt if I didn't buy them anything.

Hurriedly, I filled my shopping cart with last minute items and headed to the long checkout lines. In front of me were two small children-a boy of about 5 and a younger girl. The boy wore a ragged coat. The girl’s head was a matted mass of curly hair. She carried a beautiful pair of shiny, gold house slippers.

When we finally approached the checkout register, the girl carefully placed the shoes on the counter.

The clerk rang up the bill. “That will be $6.09,” she said. The boy searched his pockets. He finally came up with $3.12. “I guess we will have to put them back,” he bravely said. “But Jesus would have loved these shoes,” she cried. “Well, we’ll go home and work some more. Don’t cry. We’ll come back,” he said.

Quickly I handed $3.00 to the cashier. Suddenly a pair of arms came around me and a small voice said, “Thank you, lady.”

“What did you mean when you said Jesus would like the shoes?” I asked.

The boy answered, “Our mommy is sick and going to heaven. Daddy said she might go before Christmas to be with Jesus.” The girl spoke, “Won’t mommy be beautiful walking on those streets to match these shoes?”

My eyes flooded as I looked into her tear streaked face. “Yes,” I answered, “I am sure she will.”

Here are a few tips as to how you should care for your clothes to ensure that they last a long time. We also explain the meaning of the different symbols on the washing label(标签).

General washing instructions

Colored clothes last longer if they are washed inside out. Streaks(条纹) on jeans, for example, can then be avoided.

Shirts keep their shape better if they are dried hanging on a clothes hanger. Straighten the seams (线缝) and collar and the shape will be better kept and the shirt easier to iron.

Never allow colored clothes to dry outdoors in sunlight. They can become discolored.

Washing in water

The bowl symbol indicates that the clothes can be washed in water in a washing machine or by hand. Within the bowl, there is a figure indicating the temperature that should be used to wash the clothes. The line under the bowl indicates any limitations to the normal washing process.

Wash in a full load of laundry

Wash in a filled machine at the

indicated water temperature.

Normal spin(旋转).

Wash in half load of laundry

Wash in a machine at the indicated water temperature.

The line under the bowl indicates that extra care should be taken.

Hand washing

Never pour washing powder directly onto the clothes or allow colored clothes to soak(浸泡). This can result in discoloration. Avoid leaving clothes to soak!

Hand wash only

Hand wash only. Max 40℃.

Do not rub, do not wring out.

No water

Do not wash in water.

Washing of wool and silk

Clothes of untreated wool or silk, for example, with washing instructions “hand wash, max 40℃”, demand special care. Use a washing powder that is specifically intended for 40℃ washing in water. Do not soak.

60. Which of the following statements is true of the colored garments?

  A. They should be washed in hot water.           B. They can’t be ironed.

  C. They can’t be washed in water.                   D. They can’t be left to soak.

  A. To keep shirts’ shape better.                       B. To make shirts easier to wash.

  C. To avoid streaks on shirts.                          D. To avoid discoloration.

25th-31th, December, 2006

I have stayed in Rome for one week. I was impressed by Barcelona. If you like nightlife, Barcelona is definitely the perfect city for you. Department stores, shops are open till 10/11pm. Bars, pubs are open throughout night. In terms of sightseeing, the only highlight I can say is Gaudi’s architectures. Gaudi was an amazing talented architect. He was a rich man, but he spent most of his money on building up churches, parks, etc. One day, he had heart attack in the street. Seeing him dressed like homeless person, nobody helped him. He died of helplessness. What a tragedy! I can’t conclude anything from this story, just have this complicated feeling. What do you think?

1st-3rd, January, 2007

You would feel three days were too long for Madrid. I don’t mean Madrid is not good, but Madrid is just like twin sister of Barcelona. You won’t feel too excited about Madrid after you have been to Barcelona. Segovia is a small town close to Madrid, which is a world heritage preserved by UNESCO (联合国教科文组织).

28th-30th, February, 2007

After getting bored of architectures, churches and museums, the best way to freshen you up is to appreciate some natural scenery. That’s why I went to Zermatt in Switzerland after Rome.

In Switzerland, you definitely need to take “Glacier Express” going up to Gornergrat mountain. Swiss were so nice. I had to insert(插入)the ticket to get into the train. Unfortunately I lost mine on the top of the hill, and couldn’t find it somehow. I had to go to the box office. The salesman gave me a new ticket immediately before I finished the words. Gornergrat, I can’t use any word to describe this mountain. When you are surrounded by all those great Alps, you will feel there is nothing you can’t achieve! The wonderful view will hold your breath. I can only say it’s a must-go place in your life!

64.The author’s feeling on Gaudi’s story can be described as______.

A. sad and complicated                                    B. calm and complicated

C. sad and funny                                        D. confused and helpless

65.According to the writer, Madrid is______.

A.     a world heritage                                             B. a small city

C. similar to Barcelona                                        D. the capital of Italy

66.By telling readers the experience of losing his ticket, the author mainly intends to indicate that ______.

  A. you needn’t worry about missing the train               B. it is an unhappy trip

  C. you needn’t buy the ticket                   D. Swiss are kind and friendly

67.According to the passage, Gornergrat is ______.

  A. a place where there is little air and where you breathe difficultly

  B. a place which is wonderful and the only place you must go in your life

  C. a place which great Alps are around on every side

  D. a place whose top you can’t get to without taking a train

( D )

What is terrorism? Consideration of just a few statistics(统计数字) begins to provide an answer.

●October 1983-U.S Marine barracks bombed in Beirut: 241 deaths.

●December 1988-Pan Am Flight 103 blown up over Scotland: 270 killed.

●February 1993-New York City’s World Trade Centre bombed: 6 dead, more than 1,000 injured.

●April 199-Oklahoma City Federal Building bombed: 169 killed, hundreds injured.

●September 2001-New York City’s World Trade Centre was knocked down by terrorists’ planes and 3,126 killed.

These five facts of terrorism directed against the U.S. Government or its citizens were systematic, premeditated, and calculated; furthermore, they were fueled by extreme hatred (仇恨). The resulting death, injury, and destruction are merely part of the shock and fear that terrorists want to create, as they also call attention to their cause. The unfortunate commonality(平民)in terrorist crimes is that innocent (无辜的) people suffer.

Is there a clear and short description of who the terrorist is? Terrorists are people who believe that their cause and their rights are being threatened, and that the violence they create is justified and desirable. However, not all terrorists can be categorized as part of an organized, radical (激进的), or extremist group, for some are individuals acting alone in order to defend more direct control over their immediate environment.

What steps can be taken to lighten the terrorist’s threat? Defensive measures, according to terrorism experts, include tighter building security, more strict immigration policies to prevent foreign terrorists from entering the United States, and better intelligence information to stop terrorist crimes before they occur. However, in a free society, it becomes difficult to protect citizens from terrorism and to protect the civil liberties they enjoy.

68.The main idea of this passage is that ______.

   A. terrorism is hard to control

   B. terrorism is a serious crime

   C. terrorists may act alone or in groups

   D. five acts of terrorism against the United States

69.The underlined word“premeditated” means ______.

   A. given great importance                            B. under the influence of the government

   C. planned beforehand                          D. performed publicly

70. A defensive measure against terrorism is to have ______.

   A. more laws against it

   B. more weak immigration policies

   C. better intelligence information

   D. fewer incoming flights from foreign countries

71. The underlined word “they” in the last paragraph refers to ______.

       A. terrorism experts                           B. foreign terrorists

C. defensive measures                              D. American citizens

72. The basic pattern used to develop this passage is ______.

   A. personal narrative (叙述)                  B. time order

   C. statement and argument                   D. question and answer

       第二节: 简答题(共3小题, 满分6分)

阅读下面短文,根据第73至第75小题的具体要求,简要回答问题。

Some people say the traditional calendar of one hundred eighty days no longer meets the needs of American society.

Critics(评论家) also say a long summer vacation causes students to forget much of what they learned.

Schools are under pressure to raise test scores. Some have changed their schedule to try to improve student performance. They have lengthened(延长) the school day or added days to the year or both.

This can be costly if schools need air conditioning on hot days and school employees need to be paid for the extra time.

Local businesses may object to a longer school year because students are unable to work as long at summer jobs.

Some schools have a year-round schedule. The school year is extended over twelve months. Instead of a long vacation, there are many short ones.

Some parts of the country had year-round programs in the 19th century, mostly for economic reasons. They felt it wasted money to use school buildings for only part of the year.

Year-round schedules programs can also reduce crowding in schools. In one version(做法), students attend school for nine weeks and then have three weeks off. The students are in groups that are not all in school at the same time.

Another year-round calendar has all students in school together for nine weeks and off for three. This is meant to provide the continuous learning that can be lost over a long break.

But year-round schooling has opponents(反对者). They say it can cause problems for families when they want to make summer plans. And they say it interferes(干涉) with activities outside school-including summer employment.

73. Find in the passage a word closest in meaning to the underlined word “calendar”.

People in the world celebrate the start of a year on New Year’s Day. It is one of the oldest holidays. In Europe, North America, and South America, most people celebrate New Year’s Day on January 1st. People of other places and cultures observe the New Year at other times depending on their different calendars. The Chinese New Year, for example, is celebrated for a month beginning in late January or early February. In Iran, New Year’s Day is in March, on the first day of spring. Followers of the Jewish religion celebrate the New Year in the fall.

Different peoples start the New Year on different bases because different people used different calendars. Some peoples based their calendar on the movement of the moon. Other peoples based their calendar on the position of the sun. In ancient Babylonia the New Year started when the crops started growing. Ancient Egyptians announced the New Year each time the Nile River overflowed its banks. The Inca believed that the New Year began on the shortest day of the year. In China the New Year began when the noontime shadow reached an exact length.

Different cultures celebrate the New Year in different ways. People in the southern United States eat black-eyed peas for good luck. The Dutch eat doughnuts for good luck. For the Jewish New Year, called Rosh Hashana, people eat sweet honey so that they will have a sweet year ahead. The monthlong Chinese New Year includes outdoor parades and fireworks. During the Hindu New Year festival called Diwali, people exchange gifts and light ceremonial lamps.

Text 4

W: Mr. Watson, I wonder whether it’s possible for me to take a vacation early next month.

M: Have you finished the plan?

Text 5

M: Great! I’m going there for further study. Maybe I can get some information.

Text 6

M: Aw, Jane! What did you do?

W: Did what?

M: You know what I am talking about. Why did you tell my mother that we would have a day off? Now I can’t go out with you.

W: Well, I am sorry, Paul.

M: Yeah, but you know she just wants me to do nothing except study.

W: Well, I apologize. I guess I wasn't thinking. I got all excited.

M: Oh, well, it’s done now. I guess it doesn't matter that much, anyway. I hope it will rain tomorrow.

W: Oh. No! Don’t be that selfish!

Text 7

M: Susan, please pass me a copy of Hunan Daily.

W: Here you are.

W: Is there anything good on?

M: An American new film is showing on Saturday evening. Would you like to go to see it?

W: I’d love to, but I’m afraid I can’t. I have an examination next Monday, and I have to prepare for it. Besides I have a paper to write.

M: You’re always busy. You know we won’t have a good time without you.

W: Well, next weekend I won’t be so busy, and then we’ll have fun.

W: You still look a little sick. You should go back to bed.

M. I' m going now. I just came here to speak to you and I want to know if I can take a make-up.

W: OK, you can whenever you get well. Are you going straight home?

M: I have to stop at the drugstore on the way. I need some medicine.

W: Do you think that you should walk that far?

M: I think I’ll take a taxi.

W: Well, take care of yourself.

M: OK. Thanks.

M: No. My mother doesn't know I have a part-time job.

W: You mean you didn't tell her before?

M: No. I didn't want her to worry about my study.

W: But why are you telling her now?

M. I don't want her to worry about my life here. You see, I’ve just bought a car so I want to tell her.

Text 10

Fire fighting is a serious matter. Knowing what to do during a fire can save people’s lives. It is important to know the ways you can use and show them to everyone else in the family, such as stairways, fire exits but no lifts. Learn the best way to get out from a window. The second floor window is usually not very high from the ground. An average person, hanging by the fingertips will have a drop of about 6 feet to the ground. It is about the height of an average man. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way down than to stay in a burning building. Windows are also useful when you are waiting for help. Be sure to keep the door closed before opening the window. Otherwise, smoke and fire may be drawn into the room. Keep your head low at the window to be sure you get fresh air rather than smoke. On the second or third floor, the best windows for escape are those which open onto a roof. From the roof a person can drop to the ground more safely. Dropping onto cement might end in injury. Use bushes and trees. They can help you to have a soft landing.

After-class Hobbies and Interests

Recently a survey has been done to find out the after-class hobbies and interests of the students in our school. From the form we know that most students like doing sports after class. Thirty-eight percent of the students enjoy surfing the Internet. Only eight percent of the students like reading and about three percent of the students like doing other things.

I think after-class activities are quite necessary. They can help students relax after overloaded study. But the percentage of surfing the Internet is too high and that of reading is too low. This is not a very good phenomenon. Studying is the most important thing for us now because we are students, after all.

As far as I am concerned, the school should guide the students in surfing the Internet. And the school should also find ways to arouse students’ interests of reading.
