There were two things in the world that Ghagra Geeta Bali hated. The first was the way, Rani, the domestic help, combed her hair. The second was, you guessed it, her name. She hated her name so much that she prayed to God every night: Dear God, let me be born again. So I can have a name like Rita or Preeti. A short, smart one-word name.

On Tuesday, Ghagra Geeta Bali and her mother went for their usual shopping. There was a long queue of children just outside the record store. They went closer to look. It was yet another scheme to sell a few audio cassettes. Everyone who bought a cassette qualified for the scheme.

In this case, the artist whose songs were featured on the cassette was a young sensation called Malik Faridabadi, a great favorite with teenagers. Ghagra Geeta Bali was no exception.

A friendly young man was writing down the names of the people who wanted to participate in the scheme. Out of this long list Malik would pick one name, and the chosen one would get to meet him, plus of course, win many freebies (赠品).

But when her mother asked her to participate, Ghagra Geeta Bali said no. She didn’t want to speak out her name in front of so many people and make herself the butt (笑料) of amusement. But mothers being mothers, she just went up to the man and told him in firm tones: “Please enter my daughter’s name. It is Ghagra Geeta Bali.”

“It is what?” the man asked, naturally a little taken aback.

“G-h-a-g-r-a G-e-e-t-a B-a-l-i. There she is.” she replied while pointing to her daughter. The crowd standing around also turned to stare. All Ghagra Geeta Bali wanted then was for the earth to open up and swallow her.

That did not happen. But the following week she received a call. It was from the recording company that had announced the scheme. And they told her that she was the chosen one.

“It is all because of your name,” said that public relations man who had called. “Mr. Faridabadi took one look at it in the list and said that he couldn’t wait to meet the brave girl.”

C. One should be brave to meet anything strange.

D. Something that one thinks is bad may turn out good.

The income gap between China’s rural and urban residents (居民) has continued to widen during the past few years in spite of rapidly rising rural incomes, Agricultural Minister Sun Zhengcai said here on Wednesday.
The income ratio (比率) between urban and rural residents was 3.28:1 in 2006, against 3.23:1 in 2003, said Sun in his report on the promotion of building a new countryside in 2007. Sun also said the net income(纯收入)of rural residents in different regions also varied. The income gap is only one of several problems in rural areas, according to Sun’s report. While listing the achievements in rural areas in recent years, Sun believed that rural development still followed behind urban development.
“We have bigger pressure to ensure the supply of major agricultural products such as grain.” he said. “China’s urbanization (都市化) has been speeded up and more rural residents have gone to urban areas.” he said.
“In this case, more agricultural producers become farm produce consumers, which created more pressure for supply.” he said.
Another problem facing China’s agricultural development is inadequate application of science and technology.
“Only 30 percent of scientific and technological achievements have been applied to agricultural production, which is 40 percentage points lower than developed countries.” he said.
Despite increased government spending in rural areas, the infrastructure (基础下部组织) is still poor and easily hit by disasters.
According to Sun, the government spent 431.8 billion yuan ($59.15 billion) on agriculture, rural areas and farmers this year, an increase of 80.1 billion yuan over the previous year.
“China set aside 11.38 billion yuan to promote a new rural cooperative medical care system and 27.98 billion yuan to support the new compulsory education mechanism in rural area to ensure that all citizens shared the fruits of China’s reform and opening-up.” Sun said.

48. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
A. Because of the rapidly rising rural incomes, the income gap between China’s rural and urban residents will disappear this year.
B. The net income of rural residents in different regions is the same.
C. The government has taken measures to develop the economy in the rural areas.
D. Because of the rapidly rising rural incomes, the supply of major agricultural products is

enough.

A. 431.8 billion yuan   B. 511.9 billion yuan    C. 351.7 billion yuan   D. 80.1 billion yuan
50. Which is NOT the problem in rural areas?

Noah’s Ark(诺亚方舟)has set sail again. Crossing stormy scientific waters, today’s ark is not carrying animals two by two to safety. Rather, it could produce unlimited numbers of presently endangered animals.

Noah is the name given in advance to the clone of a dead gaur, a rare type of endangered wild ox found in India, Bangladesh and Southeast Asia. The new Noah is expected to be born any day now to Bessie, a cow living on a farm in Iowa. Cows have given birth to gaurs before, but Advanced Cell Technologies, a small biotechnology company in Massachusetts, is using a cross-species nuclear-transfer technique to clone a different species.

Bessie’s ultrasound(超声)tests look good, but is the concept a sound one?Robber Lanza, ACT’s vice president of medical and scientific development, says that technique “presents exciting possibilities” that may help rescue endangered species and perhaps even reverse(逆转)extinctions. Other scientists argue that such approaches are unlikely to make a significant contribution to the support of the endangered species, especially if their habitats have been destroyed.

If Bessie’s little gaur is delivered safely, the birth will come as an encouragement to many biologists in the US and Europe who are engaged. In particular, though, Noah’s arrival will hearten the scientists at ACT, who recently signed a deal with Spanish officials to attempt to clone the bucardo, an extinct mountain goat native to the Pyrenees Mountains. The last bucardo died a year ago. Scientists had already kept a quantity of its cells, and ACT hopes to transfer them into other goats’ eggs some time soon.

52. What is the best title for this passage?

   A. Clone.    B. Research on Clone.    C. Endangered Species.   D. Noah’s New Ark.

53. Which is TRUE according to the passage?

   A. Noah’s Ark has set sail again to carry animals two by two to safety.

   B. Some argued about disapproval of the clone of the new Noah.

   C. Noah is the name of a cloned gaur found in Pyrenees Mountains a year ago.

   D. Bessie is a rare type of endangered wild ox.

54. Advanced Cell Technologies _______.

   A. has produced unlimited numbers of presently endangered creatures

   B. is a global biotechnology firm

   C. is trying out a cross-species nuclear-transfer technique

   D. has succeeded in cloning unlimited animals

The Internet is redrawing the media landscape and will be for decades to come, but traditional media will not be left out of the picture, argue two University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, journalism professors. Ed Mullins, chairman of the Journalism Department, and Jim Stovall, the founder of Dateline Alabama, the news website of the College of Communication and Information Sciences, agree that the future of the web is still a mystery, but argue that, in the near future, it will serve more as a helpmate to traditional media.

“Nobody knows where the web is taking us, but when it comes to journalism, old media will be dominant (most noticeable) players in the new media game.” Mullins believes. “A report goes that most Americans go to sites operated by old-line media when looking for news on the web.”

Just as national old media dominate the web at that level, local old media run mostly by newspapers and, to a lesser degree, by television stations dominate those markets. Is there a pattern here? “Yes.” says Mullins and Stovall. “At least in the first decade of the web, newspaper companies dominate web journalism,” Mullins explains. “Why? They specialize in news, and that gives them an advantage. What most readers go to websites for is news and e-mail, a form of person-to-person news, especially in the form of chatting.”

The reason for newspapers’ dominance in web journalism, Stovall points out, is that they put the biggest money in news. “The Birmingham News, for example, with about 175 positions, has more journalists on its payroll(薪水册)than all of the state’s broadcast, cable, and web.”

56. What is the best title for the passage?

A. Internet won’t get rid of print media.      B. Internet challenges traditional media.

C. Looking national local news on the web. D. Journalism should be dominated by web.

57. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of traditional media?

A. Doubtful.       B. Worried.        C. Concerned.        D. Optimistic.

58. Traditional media dominate web journalism because ________.

A. news and advertising are their only business

B. they hire more journalists to work for them

C. web companies dare not compete with them

D. they enjoy special advantages in journalism

59. What role does the Internet play in journalism according to Paragraph 1?

A. It will someday dominate the media market.

B. It is likely to threaten the future of print media.

C. It will become a helpful partner of print media.

D. It will revolutionize traditional journalism.

60. The following prove that old media still dominate web journalism except ______.

A. people prefer traditional media when looking for news

B. old media have the most important position in local markets

C. newspaper companies have more control in web journalism

D. few people go to websites to get national and local news

One possible version

One Sunday morning, there were some people in Zhongshan Park. At a stand, a woman was

buying an ice-cream when a young man behind her snatched her handbag away. Hearing the shouting “stop him”, a few people began to run after him. There was an old man sitting quietly on a bench nearby and as the snatcher was running past him, the old man quickly picked up his umbrella and put it between the snatcher’s legs, so the young man fell down on the ground hard. Soon two policemen came in a police car and arrested him. At last, the woman thanked the old man, and the people around praised the old man for his cleverness.
