| 1. _______ With the arrival of the age of "information economy", intellectual work is becoming a more important source of wealth than manufacturing.Organizations in all walks of life are doing more to spread their information. So people of the Public Relations are hired to speak for them. A lot of our news is actually collected from press releases and reports of events intentionally staged for journalists. In the information age, journalists spend their time, not investigating, but passing on the words of a spokesperson. 2. _______ There is a joke in the novel Scoop about the newspaper's owner, Lord Copper. The editors can never disagree with him. When he's right about something they answer "definitely", and when he's wrong they say "to some extent, Lord Copper." It seems reasonable to suppose that, in the real world, the opinions of such powerful people still influence the journalists and editors who work for them. 3. _______ In countries where the news is not officially controlled, it may be provided by commercial organizations who depend on advertising. The news has to attract viewers and maintain its audience ratings. I suspect that some stories get air-time just because there happen to be exciting pictures to show. In Britain, we have the tabloid newspapers which millions of people read simply for entertainment. There is progressively less room for historical background, or statistics, which are harder to present as a sensational story. 4. _______ There is an argument that with spreading access to the internet and cheap technology for recording sound and images we will all be able to find exactly the information we want. People around the world will be able to publish their own eye-witness accounts and compete with the widely-accepted news-gatherers on equal terms .But what it will mean also is that we'll be subjected to a still greater amount of nonsense and lies. Any web log may contain the latest information of the year, or equally, a made-up story that you will never be able to check. 5. _______ Maybe the time has come to do something about it, and I don't just mean changing your choice of TV channel or newspaper. In a world where everyone wants you to listen to their version, you only have two choices: switch off altogether or start looking for sources you can trust. The investigative journalist of the future is everyone who wants to know the truth. |
下面文章中有5个段落需要添加首句(第1~2题)。请从以下选项(A、B、C、D、E和F)中选出适合各段落的首句。选项中有一项是多余选项。
A.Time can run out.
B.Tomorrow won't be better.
C.Ideas need lime to develop.
D.Your professor will be impatient.
E.You blow off your chances for help.
F.You're probably overestimating(高估)the pain.
Never Put off Until Tomorrow What You Can Do TodayWant to put off studying for the physics test? Or writing that thirty-five-page research paper on future uses of biotechnology? Sure you do? And who wouldn't? But it's still a silly idea to put off doing something until a future time. Here's why…
1.________.The task will be still the same.It won't be any more fun and you still won't want to do it.As the deadline gets closer and closer, the task seems to become larger and larger if you haven't started the work. And the stress increases. Now not only do you have to write that paper, you have to do it under great pressure.
2.________.Before you start, it seems that the task is unlikely to be accomplished. But you know what? You're probably miscalculating.Get started-maybe on a small piece-and you'll discover that you have more resources and know more about the subject than you thought.Result? You won't experience nearly as much suffering as you expected to.Things are guaranteed-100 percent-to get better.
3.________.If you leave your work until the night before it's due, you give up
the possibility of getting input from your professor.Professors regularly give advice -or at least a few useful tips-during office hours.Unfortunately v though, they don't usually hold office hours at midnight, so you'll be out of luck when you discover the night before the midterm that you have no idea how to do the questions that will count for two-thirds of your grade.
4.________.Ever wonder why the professor assigns the paper two weeks before it's due? It's because he or she expects you to be thinking about the issue, or doing the research, for two weeks. No, not every waking moment, but at least some of the time. After all, the professor could just as easily have given the assignment one week before it was due if he or she expected less thinking. Most college papers require you to have some kind of idea, then to spend some time thinking about it, revising it, and polishing it.When you throw together a paper or a report at the last minute, your ideas are half-baked.And your professor will know it.
5.________.If you put things off till the last minute 9 you might find that you haven't budgeted enough minutes to finish the necessary tasks. It's the easiest thing in the world to miscalculate how long it'll take to do all the work especially when new issues arise-like illness, family problems, computer breakdowns, trouble at work, and all the other things-as you're thinking through your paper argument or preparing yourself for the coming test.If you keep delaying, you don't allow yourself time for those various Life events that have an adverse(不利的)effect on your ability to complete your assignment.

| Life is the greatest teacher There always comes a moment when I wonder where I will end up and this moment always serves as a strong motivation for me to learn life lesson. I've learned a great many things, but these are the lessons that I wish I'd learned earlier: 1. _________ There was a time when everyone's opinion was mine as well. Whatever preferences I formerly held were dashed in the face of another's. This most likely came from a need to please others.Remember that your opinion matters just as much as the next guy's, whether they make more money than you or are less popular than you. Everyone's opinion holds the same weight. 2. _________ Drama, chaos, and emotional unrest - these were what took up most of my time as a teenager. If I had heard someone said bad things behind my back, I'd be angry. Go crazy. Looking back on those tantrums now, I'm not too surprised. After all, when you have little self control, anything is possible. The lessons here is, remain aware of how you react. 3. _________ Will one small quarrel among friends decide the fate of the entire universe? In my world it felt like it. I just wanted so much to be right and for them so much to be wrong. But in the end, it only resulted in me wasting my time and in the other person storming off in frustration. Is there really a point to arguing? Unless it's absolutely necessary, I've learned that it's better to hold your breath on things you can't control at all.Arguing to change someone's mind is one of them. 4. _________ I'm not saying every parent wants what's best for you (there are outliers), but in general, parents do what they do for you in your best interest. My parents used to make me do the dishes, cook dinner, sweep the floors, mow the lawn, take out the garbage… 5. _________ Whenever I'd lose a friend, get an awful grade, or disappoint my parents, I stewed in my own muck. Waiting for the bad moments to go away seemed to be the only solution. Fortunately, I know now that you don't have to be stuck in bad situations. You can go out and create better ones.It all depends on perspective; on how you see the situation. Viewing everything as a learning experience makes life more pleasurable, even during the hard times. You aren't stuck. You can move on. I'm glad to have learned these lessons the way I did. Each experience helped shape me to become a better person. I don't know if any young people are reading this, but if they are, I'd like to say this:"Listen to life and its experiences. Everyone goes through mostly the same things." |
