         The north magnetic pole (磁极) is no longer a resident of Canada. It has drifted across the Canadian
    Arctic and is now angling toward Siberia.
         Not to be confused with the geographic North Pole-the northern extremity of the Earth's axis (地轴),
    the north magnetic pole (where the Earth's magnetic field is directed downward) is moving due to natural
    changes in the Earth's magnetic field, a process that originates about 3, 000 kilometers below our feet, in
    the outer core (核心) of the planet. But scientists are now noticing that the magnetic pole has picked up
    its pace.
         Over the past century, the pole has been migrating at an average speed of about 10 kilometers per year,
    says Larry Newitt, head of Geomagnetic Laboratory at Natural Resources Canada in Ottawa. Since the
    1970s, this speed has increased to about 50 kilometers per year.
         Scientists are wondering why the speed is increasing, says Newitt. One Hypothesis (假说) relates it to
    "magnetic jerks", sudden shifts (变化) in the rate of change of the magnetic field. There have been three
    jerks in the past four decades, each one correlating to an increase in speed.
         If the north magnetic pole continues at its current rate, it could reach Siberia by 2056.
         "For most of recorded history, the pole has been a part of Canada, and now it's not," says Newitt. "It
    may be a blow to our collective psyche, but other than that, it doesn't have a major effect on most people's

    A long time ago，Milton S．Hershey，the creator of the popular chocolate bars，was dipped in warm chocolate．I know all about it．My grandfather was there!

    At nineteen，Hershey established a candy business in Philadelphia．Although it failed，he tried again in several other cities and succeeded with Crystal A Caramels．But Hershey was not content．He began experimenting with chocolate and managed to sell his first chocolate bars in 1900．They were an instant success．In 1903，Hershey built a factory．

    Hershey was usually pleasant and kind and enjoyed a good joke．However，in his chocolate factory，he held high standards for all the workers．He was both respected and feared．His anger would burst out when things didn't go as he'd expected，and workers were fired for mistakes．

    My grandfather began working in the factory as a young man．His job was to push the vats（大桶）of warm chocolate to a storage area．To do this，he had to push the heavy vats up a ramp（斜坡）and across the walkway．One day，Hershey was walking backward on the walkway while my grandfather was pushing a vat of chocolate up the ramp．Bump．Clunk．Ker-plop!          A barn is where farmers keep animals and equipment. Over time as fewer and fewer people worked
    on the land, more and more barns were torn down to make way for developers. Others that remained
    might have fallen into poor condition. Or perhaps they just no longer satisfy the needs of modern farmers. Keeping an old barn in good condition might not be seen as worth the cost if it doesn't serve much
    purpose. But Americans with historic barns are being urged to save them. The magazine Successful
    Farming     and the National Trust for Historic Preservation are working together on a program called
    Barn Again! The National Trust is a non-profit organization that works to provide protection for places
    of historic importance in America.
         The Barn Again program advises hundreds of barn owners every year. Awards are given for the
    projects that best succeed in restoring a barn for continued farm use. Winning buildings are used to
    demonstrate methods of preservation.
         The organization suggests how problems with things like stone and concrete block foundations can be
    fixed. With many old barns, the foundation they are built on is falling apart. Barn Again also offers advice
    for other repairs, like how to replace siding and how to use a power washer to remove loose paint. And
    farmers are given suggestions about how to calculate costs.
         Leo Fitzpatrick of Beaverton, Michigan won the 2004 Barn Again Award. He made one
    improvement at a time. The work took more than nine years. He did it himself, even though for a while he
    held another job in addition to farming. He says it cost him fourteen thousand dollars, much less than a
    new barn of similar size. The improvements include strengthening the barn. There are no structural
    supports inside the building; instead, its sizes hold it up.

         What are the situations that make you shy? You're not shy all the time. For example, when you're with your best friend, you're probably very open and comfortable being yourself. Shyness is the effect of feeling insecure(不安全). If you can identify what you're feeling insecure about, you can then take action on it.
         Many of us tend to focus on what we're not good at, rather than recognize what we are good at. As a
    result, we feel awkward around others, because we feel there's nothing impressive about ourselves. It's
    time to stop selling yourself short and start focusing on your strengths. What are you good at? What are
    your past achievements? What are things you've done that you are really proud of? Spend some time to
    recognize them.
         Many people worry too much about what others think about them. But the funny thing is, it's just in
    your mind. Most people are actually too busy to pay attention to what you're doing or not doing, so stop
    spending time worrying about others' opinion of you.
         Can you think of someone (whether a friend or a famous person) you know who is very confident,
    assured and outgoing? Use the person as your role model. Whenever you feel shy, ask yourself what that
    person will do/say in this situation. Then, do that. Soon, it becomes second nature to you to behave in that manner.
         Another great way to overcome shyness is to observe how others around you act. Reduce the time
    you spend worrying about what others think of you and look outward at how others behave themselves
    socially. What do they say? How do they act? What can you learn from them?
