In a land far away, once upon a time there was great poverty （贫困）,and only the rich could manage without great _26_. Three of those rich men and their servants were_27_together on a road when they came to a very_28_village.

Having written a book on rock music and a book on jazz music, and now writing a book __31__ the classical music of the 20^th century, I felt the __32__ to put somewhere the music that does not quite fit __33__ of these kinds of music. I also felt that I needed to research the beginning of the popular music in Western Europe and the USA in order to __34__ understand the change of the jazz and rock music. I also felt that ethnic music has become so __35__ that one should research the development from Western European and USA music. This book aims at __36__ all these gaps (差异). I did my best to give it a systematic feeling, although it is clear that musicians from such different parts of the world had very __37__ in common. Only after the joining together of the 1907s can we __38__ of a worldwide history of popular music. This book is about the __39__ of that formation (形成).

It was not very difficult to decide how to __40__ jazz music from pop music. It was much more __41__ to decide how to separate rock music __42__ the rest of popular music, because rock music has taken in just about everything. A woman in her sixties lived alone in her little cottage with a pear tree at her door. She spent all her time taking care of the tree. But the children nearby drove her  16 by making fun of her. They would climb her tree and then run away with pears,  17 “Aunty Misery” at her.
One evening, a passer- by asked to  18 for the night. Seeing that he had an  19 face, she let him in and gave him a nice   20  . The next morning the stranger, actually a sorcerer (巫师), thanked her by granting (允准) her     21 that anyone who climbed up her tree  22  not be able to come back down until she   23  it.
When the children came back to steal her   24  , she had them stuck on the tree. They had to beg her long   25  she gave the tree permission to let  26   go. Aunty Misery was free from the   27  at last.
One day another man    28  her door. This one did not look trustworthy to her,   29  she asked who he was . “I am Death, I’ve come to take you   30    me.” said he.
Thinking fast Aunty Misery said, “Fine, but I’d like to  31   some pears from my dear tree to remember the  32 it brought to me in this life. But I am too    33  to climb high to get the best fruit. Will you be so   34   as to do it for me?” With a deep sigh, Mr. Death climbed up the tree   35  and was immediately stuck to it. No matter how much he warned or begged, Aunty Misery would not allow the tree to let Death go.

It was a warm March evening，and I’d just taken a seat on the bus that would take me home．It was nearly 6：00 PM，but the bus was not yet full and the driver gave no  26  that he intended to start the bus．
A middle-aged woman took a seat opposite me . She was crying．Not speaking to anyone in particular，she   27 told her story．
She had come to the city to visit her daughter．On the way to the terminal(终点站)，a thief had _28_ one of her bags．It had contained half of the money she’d brought with her．The other half was hidden under her blouse, so she _29_ still had some money left．The bus conductor，driver，and other passengers listened to her tale．
At this time, an old man _30_got on the bus．He sat in the seat directly in front of the woman．After a few minutes, all seats were __31__．The driver started the engine．The bus conductor collected tickets and began asking us where we were  _32__．When he came to the old man’s seat，he became __33__  and asked the old man whether he had any money．The old man _34__ that he did not．He explained that he _35_ all his money this morning when he’d accidentally got on the wrong bus and now he was trying to go home．
Upon hearing this，the bus conductor _36_ the old man to get off the bus．The old man was almost in tears as he begged the bus conductor to let him take that bus  _37_ he could get home before dark．The bus driver approached the old man，and repeated the conductor’s _38__ to get off the bus．
“Stop troubling him! Can’t you see he’s only trying to get home?”she interrupted．“He doesn’t have any money!”the driver shouted．“Well, that’s no  _39_ to throw him off the bus,”she insisted．Then she said,“How much is his fare?”The bus conductor mumbled the amount．“Fine.”said the woman．She _40_ inside her blouse, took out her __41__ money，and handed the fare to the bus conductor．“Here’s his fare and mine．Just stop giving him a hard time．”
All eyes turned _42__ the woman，who，just minutes before，had been crying over the money she’d lost．“It’s only money,” she shrugged．
By the time the bus pulled out of the terminal，she had given the old man some bread and a dollar．She rode the rest of the way home _43__ a Mona Lisa smile of peace and grace，and the money she’d lost _44_was forgotten．
On the road of life，the politeness and smiles of _45__ can lighten our loads and lift our spirits．How much sweeter the journey when we make it a little smoother and richer for others !
