LONDON —A British judge on Thursday sentenced a businessman who sold fake (假冒的)bomb detectors (探测器) to 10 years in prison, saying the man hadn’t cared about potentially deadly consequences.

It is believed that James McCormick got about $77. 8 million from the sales of his detectors — which were based on a kind of golf ball finder — to countries including Iraq, Belgium and Saudi Arabia.

McCormick, 57,was convicted (判罪) of cheats last month and sentenced Thursday at the Old Bailey court in London.

“Your cheating conduct in selling a great amount of useless equipment simply for huge profit promoted a false sense of security and in all probability materially contributed to causing death and injury to innocent people,’’ Judge Richard Hone told McCormick. “You have neither regret, nor shame, nor any sense of guilt.”

The detectors, sold for up to $ 42,000 each, were said to be able to find such dangerous objects as bombs under water and from the air. But in fact they “lacked any grounding in science” and were of no use.

McCormick had told the court that he sold his detectors to the police in Kenya, the prison service in Hong Kong, the army in Egypt and the border control in Thailand.

“I never had any bad results from customers,” he said.

39. Why was McCormick sentenced to prison?

A. He sold bombs.                              B. He caused death of people.

C. He made detectors.                              D. He cheated in business.

40. According to the judge, what McCormick had done ________ .

A. increased the cost of safeguarding

B. lowered people’s guard against danger

C. changed people’s idea of social security

D. caused innocent people to commit crimes

41. Which of the following is true of the detectors?

A. They have not been sold to Africa.

B. They have caused many serious problems.

C. They can find dangerous objects in water.

D. They don't function on the basis of science.

42. It can be inferred from the passage that McCormick _________ .

A. sold the equipment at a low price

B. was well-known in most countries

C. did not think he had committed the crime

D. had not got such huge profit as mentioned in the text

(Para. 1-3)

McCormick, 57,was convicted of cheats last month and sentenced Thursday at the Old Bailey court in London

(Para. 4)

cheating conduct, promoted a false sense of security, contributed to causing death and injury to innocent people

(Para. 5-7)

But in fact they “lacked any grounding in science” and were of no use, sold…to… , never had any bad results

根据问题中的关键词according to the judge定位第四段的第一句:your cheating conduct … promoted a false sense of security and … contributed to causing death and injury to innocent people(你的欺骗行为提高了人们虚假的安全感并助推给无辜百姓带来死亡和伤害)。

A对应文章倒数第二段的最后一句he sold his detectors to the police in Kenya, the prison service in Hong Kong, the army in Egypt and the border control in Thailand。 B对应第一段第一句“the man hadn’t cared about potentially deadly consequences”,法官只说罪犯没有关注潜在的致命后果,而不是已经导致严重的问题。C对应第五段的第一句话“were said to be able to find such dangerous objects as bombs under water and from the air”提示,探测仪的功能只是据说,而不一定真的具备找到水中危险物品的功能。选项D定位第五段的最后一句“in fact they ‘lacked any grounding in science’ and were of no use可知,这种探测仪没有科学根据,也毫无用途,和D“没有科学根据的工作原理”相吻合,故最佳答案是D。

C“认为他没有犯罪”和第七段对应,其中他所说的“I never had any bad results from customers”和C符合,C是正确答案。

The first man to step out of a spaceship and “walk” in outer space was a Russian, Alexia LeonAnd Edward White was the first American to take a “space walk”It is very interesting to imagine what it is like to take a “walk” in space

How did these two astronauts walk in space? Well, they did not actually walk in space with their feetThey floated thereThat is because in space there is no earth under your feet to walk onSpace is emptyThere is nothing around you and nothing under your feet at allSo how is it possible to walk with your feet? You can only floatWhat is more, as there is no up or down in space, to float on your stomach, or on your back, or on your head, all feels the sameIt does not make any difference to you whether you look at the earth upside down or right side up

A good way to help you to float in space is to use a jet gunIt pushes you much as a jet engine pushes a planeIt also helps you control your directionAnd in order to keep you from moving too far away from your spaceship, you have to have a line with you and tie its other end to the spaceship, because it would be so easy to move too fast and drift so far into space that it would be difficult to get back to the spaceshipThis line also carries oxygen for you to breathe, and messages from inside the spaceship and from the earth

The first two men to work outside of a spaceship have already enjoyed “space walking”Their experiments are the first step toward the building of space stations for the exploration of outer space

1This passage mainly tells us ______

[ ]

Ahow people walk in outer space

Bhow people are sent into outer space

Chow people get back onto the earth from space

Dhow people build space stations

2Alexia Leon and Edward White were both ______

[ ]

ARussians BAmericans

Cspacemen DEnglishmen

3In fact, Leon and Edward White both ______

Cjumped Dfloated

4A jet gun is used to ______

[ ]

Apush a plane up into the sky

Bhelp an astronaut float in space

Chelp an astronaut control the direction in space

Dboth B and C

5In space the special line is used to carry oxygen for people to breathe and messages from the spaceship or the earth besides ______

[ ]

Akeeping people from moving too far away from the spaceship

Bdrifting so far into space

Ccontrolling the direction

Dgetting back to the earth

The old man rested in the sun.He thought of his violin which he loved dearly. He remembered buying it in 1931 from a stranger who needed money. He had paid him 250

  “Uncle Sanchez, a telegram(电报)for you!”a boy shouted.

Slowly the man opened it.First he smiled, then he laughed.

  “What is it?”the boy asked.

“From the American who saw my violin at Christmas.”He remembered that the stranger had looked inside the violin as if he were looking for gold.”He says my violin was made by Stradivari. He will buy it for 100000.”

Sanchez was not the first person to learn that his violin was a treasure(财宝).He is just one of the most recent.Stories like this could be told in different parts of the world. Some of Stradivari’s violins have been carefully protected, others have been harmed by carelessness.

Almost nothing is known of Stradivari’s early life. But we do know he was born in a small village in Italy in 1644.As a boy of twelve,he began to learn violin making from Amati,Who was famous all over Europe for his fine violins. However, it was not until after Amati’s death in 1684 that Stradivari began making his own violins. He never made poor violins, but he made some that were much better than all the others.Luckily Stradivari’s great skill was noticed.Top prices were paid for his works from the time he began to sell them.

Today it is thought that Stradivari made violins that are better than any made ever since. Many of the world’s best violinists have chosen Stradivari’s violins. But few now can have a lot of money to collect them.some of the most beautiful are kept in museums. There, they can be seen by everyone or lent to famous artists for concerts.
