Now let us look at how we read. When we read a printed text, our eyes move across a page in short, jerky （急动的）movement. We recognize words usually when our eyes are still when they fixate. Each time they fixate, we see a group of words. This is known as the recognition span(范围)or the visual span. The length of time of which the eyes stop ---the duration of the fixation (定位)----varies considerably from person to person. It also varies within any one person according to his purpose in reading and his familiarity with the text. Furthermore, it can be affected by such factors as lighting and tiredness.

These are the kinds of statements used in magazine, newspaper, radio and television ads, promising new shapes and new looks to those who buy the medicine or the device. The promoters(推销员) of products say they can shape the legs, slim the face, smooth wrinkles, or in some other way to beauty or desirability.

Often such products are nothing more than money-making things for their promoter. The results they produce are questionable, and some are dangerous to health.

To understand how these products can be legally（合法地） promoted to the public, it is necessary to understand something of the laws covering their regulation. If the product is a drug, FDA（Food Drug Administration）can require proof (证明) under the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act that it is safe and effective before it is put on the market. Many people influenced various aspects of my life, based on their personal characteristics, accomplishments, and values.
