British children are getting fat, but they are also growing in other ways, too.Studies show that the height and weight of modern ten-year-olds are different from the height and weight of their parents at ten.British ten-year-olds are now on average 141 centimetres tall(138-139cm in 1972).The same studies show a 17% increase in weight.

The studies don’t give reasons for this, but we can guess that the children are changing for two main reasons:diet and exercise. These days children eat healthy food a lot of the time, and this explains the increase in height to 141 cm, but they also eat a lot of junk food, for example, sweets, chips, cakes and biscuits. After school, many of today’s children sit down all evening. They watch TV, listen to music, or do their homework, but they often don’t take any exercise.

Notes:

1.height 高度

2.weight 重量

3.average 平均

4.increase 增加

5.diet 日常饮食
