Last week,US President Barack Obama visited China.During his visit,he sent President Hu Jintao a new“Go(围棋)”set.Obama’s special gift makes many people interested in this old Chinese game.

“Go”is an interesting game.It’s easy to pick up but hard to excel(精通)at.The actual rules are very simple.Two players take turns placing stones on a board of 361 squares.If a stone or group of stones is completely surrounded(包围)by stones of another color,they are removed.The winner is decided by counting the territory (领域)belonging to each player.

“Go”has a history of more than 4,000 years in China The game probably had its origins in astronomy(天文学).Ancient Chinese thought the“Go”board was a small universe.Other stories say that the game was invented by Shun,an official of Emperor Yao.He designed it for Yao’s son,Danzhu,to teach him discipline(纪律),concentration and balance.

Culturally,“Go”is more than just a game It is one of the four skills of the Chinese gentleman scholar(学者),along with calligraphy(书法),painting and playing the musical instrument guqin.

     There are many famous gifted children. Most of them are talented at math, music,or chess. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is one of them. He wrote music when he was only four years old. A more recent one is Arran Fernandez. Arran is an outstanding child, because he took and passed the British Junior High School math exam when he was only five years old. Most British children take this test when they are sixteen. Others include Ruth Lawrence, who went to Oxford University at the age of twelve to study math.
