This happened to me at the age of twelve. It seems like a long time to remember the name of the old lady. Yet it keeps in my  35 that she taught me a lesson in tolerance(宽容) which I shall never forget.
On a winter afternoon, a friend and I were  36 stones onto the roof of the old lady’s house. I found myself a perfectly smooth stone and threw it out. The stone was too smooth, however, so it slipped(滑) from my hands and  37  straight not for the roof but for a small window on the old lady’s back porch(门廊). At the sound of broken   38 , we knew we were in trouble and ran away.
I was too scared(胆怯) about getting caught by the old lady that first night. However, a few days later, when I was sure that I hadn’t been   39 , I started to feel guilty(有罪的) for what I had done. She  40 greeted me with a smile each day when I gave her the newspaper, but I was no longer able to act comfortably.
I made up my mind to  41 for her window with my paper delivery(发送) money I collected. I put the money in an envelope with a note explaining I was  42  for breaking her window and hoped that the seven dollars would cover the cost for repairing it.

The next day, I handed the old lady her paper and was able to return the warm smile that I was  45 from her. She thanked me and gave me a bag of cookies.
Reaching for the cookies, I  46 an envelope and pulled it out of the bag. When I opened the envelope, I was surprised to see the seven dollars and a short note that said, “I’m proud of you!”

"Who did this?" Mrs. Green asked with a piece of broken glass in her hand. She had never been so   51  with us. The classroom was so quiet. All students looked at the window except me. I kept my head   52  . I knew it was me. I broke it when I practiced   53  baseball. But should I tell the truth? If I did, I would be in trouble, I didn’t have enough   54 . How could I afford to buy such an expensive window? I really didn’t want to put up my hand,   55  at last I said. “I did it. I am sorry.” It was not   56  for me to say those words.
Mrs. Green went to the book shelf and took down a book. Then she walked to me. Looking at  57 , I was a little afraid. To my surprise, she said, "I know you like  58   .Here is the book about them. It’s yours now. I give it to you not because you broke the window, but because you are  59  ." I couldn’t believe it. I wasn’t punished(惩罚). However, I was given my favorite book about birds.
It happened 20 years ago, but I still   60  the book. The lesson my teacher taught me that day will be in my heart forever.
