题目列表(包括答案和解析)
Geoffrey Payne talks for the 1st time about the night his wife was killed. The judge thought it was he who killed his wife. Now he wrote to a magazine from the prison(监狱) about what happened on the night of 13 October 1999.
I had to stay late at the hospital that night to do an operation. I finally left at about 11pm. I drove home slowly because the weather was terrible—the wind was blowing and it was raining heavily. I was running into our road when a man suddenly ran in front of my car. I almost hit him but I stopped just in time. I was frightened and the man looked frightened, too. I got out of the car but he ran away before I could ask if he was all right. It was very strange.
When I got home, the lights were on but it was very quiet. I called to my wife but there was no answer. Then I remembered that she was out at a concert.
I was still very upset about what happened on the road, so I made myself a drink. Then I went upstairs to have a bath. I saw that the window in the bedroom was open. This was strange because my wife always locked the doors and windows before she went out. She was afraid of burglars. When I went to close it, I found Ellen. She was lying on the floor. There was blood everywhere. I rushed over for her pulse but she was dead. I sat on the floor beside her body and was too frightened to do anything.
The next thing I knew was that the sky was getting light. I can’t remember a thing about that night. In the morning I phoned the police. They arrived half an hour after I phoned them. But it seemed like hours. During that time I tried hard to remember anything I could about the night before. I couldn’t stop thinking about the man in the road. What was he doing at that time of night in our quiet neighborhood?

One day when Isaac Newton was reading a book under an apple tree on the farm,an apple fell down and hit him on the head. For most people that would be the end of the story, but not for Newton. Why did the apple fall out of the tree? Does everything fall? What makes things fall? Can anything stop things from falling? Are the sun, moon, and stars falling? Why don't they ever hit the ground?
Newton spent many years answering these questions by thinking and doing experiments. He made up the law of gravity(引力定律).According to this law everything pulls everything else to itself by a force(力)called gravity. How strong that force is depends on how heavy the things are and how close together.
Newton's law of gravity not only explained how things fall on earth, but how planets move around the sun and how moons move around planets.A friend of his,Edmund Halley, decided to try Newton's theory(理论)on comets(彗星).People had been studying comets for hundreds of years but failed to understand them,so he decided to study their reports and compare them to Newton's theory.
Up till then people had thought that comets just came and went, and that nobody could know when or why.But Newton's law of gravity gave rules that Halley could use to study the records of comets. He found some reports of a big bright comet that he was sure was the same one, coming back every 75 years. He predicted(预测)when it would come back next.
Halley's prediction came true.Tile comet appeared at the right time as he predicted using Newton's ideas. This was enough to convince anybody who still didn't believe Newton.Halley's Comet has come a few times since then, always right on time. You'll be able to see it on its next trip near the sun and earth when you're old enough to be a grandparent.
1.The passage starts with a story to show _______.
A.it was such a funny one
B.Newton liked to eat apples
C.how much Newton liked reading
D.what led to Newton's discovery of gravity
2.How strong gravity is depends on _______ of the things according the Newton’s theory.
A.color and distance(距离) B.weight and distance
C.size and weight D.size and color
3.According to the writer,Newton was especially different from others in that _______.
A.he liked reading under apple trees B.he liked to find out how things worked
C.he was very quiet and patient D.he was so much interested in science
4.The underlined word convince in the last paragraph probably means “make people _______”.
A.believe B.doubt C.understand D.relax
5.Which of the following is true about Edmund Halley?
A.He discovered a big bright comet
B.He helped Newton to create his theory.
C.He predicted when the same comet would come back.
D.He studied the comet for 75 years
Worried about sports injuries (伤害)? The best way to do with sports injuries is to prevent them.
Sports injuries are injuries that happen while doing sports. You may think of your back or your arms and legs as the only places where you could get hurt while playing, but you can get a sports injury anywhere on your body. Head and neck injuries are among the most dangerous. You can hurt your neck in sports like mountain climbing, skydiving, horseback riding, diving, or boxing.
If the injury is serious and there is a chance that the neck might be injured, it’s very important to keep the injured person still with the head held straight while someone calls for emergency medical help (急救). If the person is lying on the ground, do not try to move him or her. Never try to move someone who may have a neck injury – a wrong treatment could even result in death.
Always remember that an injury left untreated will probably get worse over time. Yet, it’s not always necessary to see a doctor right away if your pain is slight (轻微的).
The most important thing to do when you feel you are injured is to stop doing whatever sport has caused the injury right away and go to see a doctor. For more serious or complicated (复杂的) injuries, it may be best to see a doctor.
If your doctor has asked you to stop playing, your number-one question is probably “When can I play sports again?” Make sure you discuss this with your doctor.
Always wear helmets (头盔) for contact (接触) sports and when doing activities like biking and roller-skating to prevent head injuries.
When you return to play, you might need some new protective equipments (装备) that help protect your body part from possible reinjury.
To help prevent reinjury, be sure to warm up before practice and games. Remember to take it slow when you first get back into your sport.
So, play, but play safe. Try to learn from your experience and do the things that can help you keep away from getting hurt.
1. __________is a contact sport.
A. Volleyball B. Tennis
C. Basketball D. Golf
2. When a person falls off a horseback and can’t move, we should not __________.
A. take him to a safer place
B. leave him where he is
C. keep his head straight
D. call for emergency medical help
3. Before taking part in the relay race, we have to __________.
A. prepare useful equipments
B. stand there waiting
C. make sure we have no injury
D. get ourselves ready
4. From the passage we learn that ___________.
A. we should go to see a doctor right away when we feel injured
B. we can return to sports as soon as we get medical treatment
C. stopping whatever sport has caused injuries is necessary
D. using protective equipments keeps you away from injuries
