You are made of seventy-three percent water. You have 206 bones. There are more sweat glands (汗腺) in
your feet than in any other part of your body. There are about sixty muscles in your face; you use twenty of
them to smile but forty to frown (皱眉). Your heart beats over 100,000 times each day. You are really amazing!
The human body is a complex machine. From the day we are born our bodies grow and change because of
our environment, diet and habits. The body has many different organ (器官) systems and parts that work
together to allow us to breathe, move, see, talk, and eat food all at the same time. Most of the time we are
unaware (预兆) of what is happening in our bodies; usually it's only when we get sick or feel pain that we
notice.
Many people do not take enough care of their complex machines. Bad habits like smoking, drinking too much
alcohol (酒精), and eating junk food damage our bodies. Stress can also cause health problems. People who
worry a lot or have busy jobs often don't get enough sleep, or don't eat properly. We also damage our bodies by
playing sports or having accidents. In 1999, Americans made more than 102,000,000 visits to emergency rooms.
The two most common reasons were for injure (伤害) and poisoning. ER patients were also treated for many
other medical problems-from bad cuts and broken bones to serious illness that needed surgery (外科手术).
As with any machine, the better you take care of it, the longer it will last. Of course, the best way to take
care of your amazing machine is to eat the right food, do regular exercise, and get enough sleep. Oh, and don't
forget to smile!

In a US study, researchers measured (测量) the happiness of 4739 people over 20 years. The study found that a person’s happiness depends on the happiness of people he connects with. Surprisingly, it also found that happiness spreads not only between direct friends, but also among friends of your friends’ friends! And those good feelings seem to have the greatest influence among friends of the same sex (性别).
“People with more good friends are less likely to develop depression (情绪低落) and worry,” says Dr. Toupey Luft. “Though you can’t choose your family or workmates, you do have control over friendships.” With a little effort, you can add more positive (正面的,积极的) relationships to your social circle. Here’re the suggestions:
“Nobody is all positive or all negative,” says Luft. “But there are people you may feel more positive. Use that as your way to check people and keep records.” When spending time with others, pay attention to your feeling. Are you feeling tired and unhappy? To help you keep records, Luft suggests taking a moment when you get home to write down what your feeling is when around them.
While it’s great to gather with positive friends, it’s also good to stay with others in the same life situations. “But if you’re all just complaining (抱怨) and nothing is changing, it’s not healthy,” says Luft. Are your friends negative, or are you doing most of the complaining? Considering the answers to these questions can help you decide if you want to stand in front of them. Or you could let the relationship disappear slowly.
Sometimes your hobbies can lead to true friendships. Check out newspapers and websites to find a group or class for something you enjoy. These friends can always be there for you and can care each other through difficulties, illness and death.
Not into groups? Look for individual (个人的) communication instead. Luft says, “Set small goals, such as having coffee with one new person, and develop friendship according to a plan. If someone suggests going for lunch sometime, set a date.”
“If you’re feeling disappointed (失望) with a friend, try talking about what you both need,” says Luft. For example, tell her what you want during hard times in your lives. While your friend may need to be left alone, you may want caring phone calls. With some friends you laugh and have fun together at the movies—and that can be enough. With others, you pay attention to your deep connection.

None of us is quite as healthy in mind as we seem, but neither is every unusual thing we do means we’re unhealthy. How to tell the difference? Start by reading the letters below, which have been analyzed by our experts.

(1) Lately, after I read an unusual word, I often can’t get it out of my head for days, sometimes weeks. I silently repeat it to myself, often spell it, and even wake up in the night with it ringing in my head. What’s wrong with my brain?

That sounds like a little obsession (着迷). Your brain feels that for some reason it must repeat this word. Unless it is taking up more than an hour of your day or really influencing your life, it is not serious. To stop it, leave it alone. If you really want to stop the repetition, set aside ten minutes a day to repeat the word over and over again. Do it so many times that you finally get sick of it.

(2) I sometimes have strange dreams when taking a short sleep, and I think they’re real when I wake up. Then, as I come around, I realize they aren’t. Is there something wrong with me?

What’s wrong is that you take short sleeps and most of us don’t! But are you mad? No. We all have strange dreams, and it’s normal, upon waking, to be fuzzy (模糊) for a little while or even not to remember where we are. What is not normal is if you don’t have these dreams.

(3) When people are eating, I can’t stand the sound of a fork or spoon knocking on a plate or bowl. I begin shaking and having a headache. I’m also sickened by the sound of people chewing with their mouths open. Is there something wrong with me?

It seems that there is something wrong with everyone else you know. How come they don’t eat with their mouths closed? At the least, you’re over sensitive (敏感) to little noise. You may also be troubled by a disorder in mind called misophonia. Try drawing your attention away from the noise. Pay attention to something else as hard as you can when you eat with your friends: the music in the background, the scene out the window, even what they’re talking about. You can train yourself to be less troubled by the noise.

(4) When I’m driving and have to cross a bridge, my heart starts racing and I feel light-headed. The fear that I’m going to pass out makes the whole situation worse. Am I crazy?

This sounds like an anxiety (忧虑), which can bring on heart illness and a real sense that you’re going to die. This kind of feeling is the body’s reaction to the possible danger in near future. To keep your anxiety from progressing, try the old method: breathing. When you feel your heart starting to race, take a deep breath in three or four times, and then let it out five or six times until you start to feel comfortable. You can also make a tape of your favourite song, and sing along as you cross the bridge.

56. What does the word analyzed mean in the first paragraph?

A. Divided into parts.                                    B. Examined carefully.

C. Discussed in groups.                                D. Treated scientifically.

57. Which person described in the four letters has got something wrong?

A. The first two.                                                 B. No. 1 and No. 3.

C.       The last two.                                           D. No. 2 and No. 4.

58. What can we do when we have strange dreams after a short sleep?

A. It’s not necessary for us to do anything.

B. We can think about the dreams once again.

C. It’s a good idea to pay attention to other things.

D. We’d better go to see a doctor as early as possible.

59. From the passage, we can infer that ______.

A. we don’t need to worry about anything in mind

B. disorders in mind can be treated by ourselves

C. one must face all kinds of problems in life

D. if you are brave, nothing can trouble you
