Modern zoos are different from old zoos of fifty years ago. In old zoos people could see animals from many parts of the world. The animals lived in cages. The zoo keepers(饲养员) took good care of them, but many of the animals did not feel well, and they often fell ill.

In modern zoos, people can see animals in more natural conditions(自然条件). The animals are free in larger places. Trees and grass grow in cages and water runs through the places. There is often a deep pool filled with water in it. In an American zoo, visitors can see some small animals and many birds when they walk through a big special cage, and it is large enough for the birds to live naturally.

Modern zoos not only show animals to visitors, but also keep and save rare(稀罕的) animals. For this reason, people in the future will still be able to enjoy watching these animals.
