　　Mr Jackson worked in a hospital. A lot of patients went to see him and he was very busy and had little time to rest in the daytime. One night, when he looked over the last patient, it was five to one. He was too tired to say a word and lay down at once. As soon as he fell asleep, a farmer began to knock at the door and got him up.

　　“My wife is ill,” shouted the farmer. “Please go and look her over.” Mr Jackson had to go with the farmer. It was the coldest night of the year and the road was covered with snow and ice. The farmer lived far away from the town and they went through a forest, crossed two rivers and a mountain. It took them three hours to get to the short, small house. And they both were tired, cold and hungry.

　　A long time ago there lived a very rich and powerful (有权力的) king. All the people in his kingdom (王国) were afraid of him. But was he happy? No, he was always ill and unhappy. 　　The second doctor knew he had to be careful. “O King, you will be well if you wear the shoes of a man who is always happy,”he said. The king was pleased with his answer and thought that the doctor was very wise(有智慧的). He gave the doctor a bag of gold.

　　The king asked hundreds of people if they were always happy. They all said they were sometimes happy and sometimes sad. At last he met a beggar(乞丐) who said that he was always happy.

　　“Give me your shoes quickly, ”said the king, “and I will make you a very rich man. ”

Operation Smile was started by a doctor and his wife. In 1982, together with some volunteers, they went to Philippines to help children who had holes in their lips or inside their mouths.
