Tipping in the West

Tipping customs in the West vary considerably from country to country,

from one part of a country to another, and from small town to large city. There are no absolute rules: most people give between 15 to 20 percent of the bill depending on how much service they have had, how many people have been involved, how long they have been at a place, how much they have enjoyed it and where they are.

Fifteen percent in big cities is OK; 20 percent means something a bit more than that. Outside major cities, 15 percent is still the commontip. And the normal tipping coin for small services is 25 cents.

People you DO tip in the West are: waiters, taxi drivers, porters, doormen, hatcheck girls. You also tip for personal services from barbers, shoeshine boys, beauty parlor attendants, and so on.

People you DO NOT tip include: customs officials and other government employees, mailmen, airline personnel, bus drivers, storeclerks, gas station attendants, receptionists, operators. Christmas is special and expensive for tipping. You should give the following people some tip: doormen, the superintendent of one's apartment house, the laundryman, newspaper boy, milkman, parking lot attendant, postman and barber. The amount will vary depending on how often they have done the service, how friendly they are, and one's own economic level.
