Noise pollution is doing much harm to our health now. Noise is a kind of invisible (无形的) killer. More
and more students enjoy listening to music very much. When they listen to MP3 players, they like to turn up
the volume (音量). While watching TV, they keep the volume up. But they haven't realized that the noise is
weakening (减弱) their hearing. In fact, the noise not only influences each member in the family, but also
influences the neighbor.
Noise pollution is a source of misery to people in our society. If people are often disturbed by it, they may
feel uncomfortable or sad. What's worse, the noise can make people mad sometimes. If a worker works in a
printing factory for too long, his hearing loss is much faster than a common person working in a quieter
environment. So everybody must pay attention to noise pollution.
The following simple ways can be used to avoid (避免) noise:
★Try to use less noisy equipment (设备) (e.g. washing machines).
★Keep the volume of TV, radio and music as low as possible, especially late at night.
★If your dog barks when left alone, make sure to leave it with a friend.
★If you have a party, tell your neighbors in advance (提前) and keep the noise a little lower.
I think the local environment protecting department (部门) will take measures to control the noise levels.
But it's everybody's duty to keep a quiet environment.
1. Why do people call noise a kind of invisible killer?
A. Because we can't see it with our own eyes.
B. Because it's harmful to our health, but people don't realize it.
C. Because it often causes people to die.
D. Because it has no direct effect on humans.
2. The underlined word "misery" means "_________" in English.
A. enjoyment
B. worry
C. pleasure
D. suffering
3. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Listening to MP3 players too loud may do harm to your hearing.
B. Everybody has a duty to keep a quiet environment.
C. We should never use noisy equipment.
D. Noise is a kind of unwanted sound.
4. We can see this passage in a magazine about _________.
A. science
B. geography
C. environment
D. fashion
5. What's the best title for this passage?

Dear Jane and Bob,

I’m writing to invite you both to my 15th birthday party on Saturday, June 14th. I’m having a meal in a restaurant with a few friends and then we’ll have a party at my house. I would love you both to come if you can. If you need a place to stay for the night, you can sleep on the floor in our sitting room but bring a sleeping bag, please! Haha, it’s only a joke. If you want to stay at my home for a night, please tell me. I will prepare it for you.

The meal is at Mama Mia’s, a good Italian restaurant. It begins at 7:30 p.m. You can take the train which leaves London, Liverpool Street at 5:00 p.m. and arrives in Cambridge at 6:45 p.m. Then we will have the birthday party at my house at about 8:30 p.m. My mother will make a birthday cake and some snacks for us. Every year, over 40 000 students in Britain run a business, “Each business runs of one year.” said Ben, one of the group of students visiting Shanghai. “When we started our business, we borrowed money from parents and friends. At the end of the year, these people will receive some of the profits(利润).” I asked Ben if running a business was difficult. He said that it was no problem. He said that they always received a lot of advice from teachers and business people.

Another member of the group, Regina, told me the four questions they always asked themselves. The questions are:

1.What do people want to buy?

2.Where is a good place to sell the product(产品)?

3.How is our product better than other products?

4.How much is the product?

I also wanted to know how the group was organized(组织), Regina said that there were usually about five to seven students in each business and among them are one manager and one accountant (会计), I asked them who was the manager. “I am, of course.”said Regina. “It was my idea to produce(生产) picture books,”she said. “They have been very popular with the other students.” I also asked the students what other people sold. “Other groups in our school sell things like T-shirts, videos and computer games,”said Ben.

“How much money do the businesses usually make?” I asked. “Some businesses make $ 20 000-30 000, but most groups make a small profit of about $ 1 000-3 000,”said Regina. I asked them what they did with the profits. “We can do what we like with the profits.” However, Regina told me that it was important not to waste(浪费) the money. She always told the other groups to give the money to charity(慈善事业).
