　　J．K．Rowling is probably the most famous author alive today．Her books about the adventures of a young wizard(魔法师)named Harry Potter have sold more than 325 million copies．They have also been translated into 64 different languages．

　　Joanne Kathleen Rowing was born in 1965 in England．She always dreamt of becoming a writer, and began writing stories when she was six years old．After she studied French at university, in 1990 she decided to move to Manchester, and went there to look for a flat．Her journey back to London was long and boring．But on that journey the idea for the Harry Potter stories first entered her mind．

　　Over the next year, she worked hard on her novel．Then, her mother died from a long and difficult illness．She was only 45．To forget her grief, Rowling moved to Portugal(葡萄牙)to work as an English teacher．There, she had a lot of free time to work on her book, and rewrote many parts of the story．

　　When she arrived back in Britain in 1994, she had a baby daughter and very little money．She moved to Edinburgh to live near her sister, and worked on her novel．Whenever her daughter feel asleep, Rowling would write as quickly as she could．After several months, she finished the book．

　　It may be surprising, but no publishers wanted to buy her book at first．They thought that people today would not like a story about magic．In 1996, after a year of searching, she found a company that would publish the novel．It soon became a bestseller, and was later turned into a successful film．People around the world have gone crazy for Harry Potter ever since．

　　It's a 5-year-old Karmen's dream to be a ballet (芭蕾舞) dancer．But Karmen,who lives in Denver (丹佛)，was born with the AIDS virus (病毒) and has　spent much of her short life going in and out of the hospital．

　　Karmen has done better than anyone who had hoped. Doctors thought she would never walk or talk, but she gets around with a walker (助行架) and speaks well.

　　Karmen may not grow up to be a ballet dancer．But even if it's difficult for her to walk，she was changed when she wore a short ballet skirt．Her mother bought her the skirt．She was really like a ballet dancer．

　　Sometimes，Karmen puts her head on her folded (交叉) hands because she is tired，and sometimes she needs to talk with God．One of her prayers (祈祷) goes，“Dear God，please make my legs and body strong．Please let me grow up．”

　　Children with cancer，AIDS and other serious illnesses want to know that they are not alone．They want truthful answers to difficult questions，and they want to tell stories梖or the family，friends and for themselves．

　　Gloria arrived in Barbados on 26 January, 2008 after rowing * across the Atlantic for three months and a half．Gloria was in one of 36 small wooden rowing boats that set off on 7 October, 2007 from Tenerife Island on the Atlantic Rowing Challenge Race*．Each boat was exactly the same design and each one had food for the journey *．There were two people in each boat and their challenge was to row across the Atlantic, a journey of about 3, 360 kilometres．

　　Gloria began the journey with her husband in a small boat．However, after 14 days he became very afraid of the huge ocean and was not able to go on, so he left her with the help of a helping boat．This did not make Gloria give up．Instead, she decided that she would continue by herself．So, for the next hundred days, she rowed her small boat alone and fought against the waves and the winds, and her own fears．

　　When she finally arrived in Barbados, Gloria was not willing to leave her boat although her husband and family were there to greet her．She sat so long in the boat that she could hardly stand, her husband had to carry her off the boat．After that, the first thing she did was to drink a toast * to her small boat, the very special lady．This lady carried her safely through many storms on her long journey and she loved it．

　　Gloria is really a brave woman．She has become the tenth woman in the world to row across the Atlantic．Like the others, she has experienced great joys and terrible things．But a brave person is not always brave,“Sometimes I wanted more than anything to be warm and dry in bed and safe from the storm around me．I wanted to stop being brave,”she said．
