题目列表(包括答案和解析)

Not every student in the United States speaks English. When David Lau was in the school in San Francisco, his only language was Chinese. He did not understand the lessons because his teachers did not speak Chinese.

David believed that he should get a good education and he complained(申诉)to the Supreme Court(最高法院)of the United States. The court agreed with David and ruled(裁决)that all schools must give certain help to students who do not speak English.

Today, students like David receive certain help until they learn enough English. If they speak Chinese, Russian, or any other language, they usually have teachers who can explain their lessons in their own languages. In many American schools a dozen(十二种)different languages are used in the classrooms.

Maria Moreira agrees that this rule of the Supreme Court was a good one. Last year she and her parents moved to San Diego(圣地亚哥)from Portugal(葡萄牙). She is one of many students in San Diego who speak only Portuguese. At first, she was afraid to go to school. She didn't want to lose a year or two of her education while she learned English. It was a nice surprise when one of the teachers talked to her in Portuguese.

Thanks to David Lau, Maria and many other students do not have to wait until they learn English to go on with the study of science, maths and history.
