Liu Xu was robbed! The 13-year-old was riding home when a man suddenly jumped out from the roadside. He pulled Liu off his bike and rode away. Liu was scared , but he didn't run after the robber. He found a telephone and called the police at 110.

“Safety is the priority (要务) in such a situation,” Liu said, remembering what his teacher had told him in his first aid class. “It is not safe to run after an adult who is much stronger than you.” Liu is a junior student at Shenzhen Bao'an Middle School in Guangdong. His school is one of the first in China to have compulsory (必修的) first aid education. Junior 1 students at the school must take the class once a week.

Teenage safety has become a serious problem recently. 83. According to a 2004 survey, about 16,000 teenagers die in accidents in China every year. An average of 40 students die every day from drowning (溺水), food poisoning and traffic accidents.

Bao'an School said that the first aid classes are to “teach students skills so that they can protect and save themselves in emergencies (紧急情况).”

Students at Bao'an often learn by role-playing in first aid classes. Zhou Min, 12, recalled her favorite lesson. “I performed as a stranger knocking at a door. A classmate stood inside the door and asked several questions before letting me in. Then we changed roles and did it again,” Zhou said. “We learned a lot while having fun at role-playing.”

The topics of the class are regularly changed. The students have learned skills for surviving (幸存) in earthquakes. They also deal with topics like sexual harassment (骚扰). “84. The teacher told us that we should try not to go out alone, especially at night. If someone tries to do bad things to us, we may hit their eyes or noses or kick their private parts (私处). Then we should quickly run into a crowded place,” said Zhong Hua, a 13-year-old girl. (Some names have been changed.)

Nearly all Chinese people are taught to be honest from childhood. But 25-year-old Xu Ting could never have known that dishonesty would almost destroy his life.

In April 2006, Xu took 1, 000 yuan from an ATM(自动取款机).He found that the machine had only taken 1 yuan from his account(账户).Xu was excited.Over the next eight hours, he kept taking money out of the machine. He got 175, 000 yuan from the faulty machine.

“I thought it was OK to take the money.I didn't steal it or rob the bank,”Said Xu.But the young man was wrong. After a year on the run, the police caught him.Last November Guangzhou court gave him a life sentence(无期徒刑).

“Xu's story teaches us that we should be honest.A problem with the machine is not an excuse to do wrong.Suppose your neighbour's door has a broken lock. That is not an excuse for breaking into the house,”said news reporter Liu Min.
