When the Audet family turns on the lights at Blue Farm, they are using electricity that comes from cows-cow manure(粪肥), to be specific.

Cows produce a lot of wastes. One cow can create 30 gallons of wastes each day.Now imagine the output of over 1, 000 cows at Blue Farm. That’s really a big amount.

When farmers clean their barns, they put the wastes in a big heap, and spread some of them on their fields for fertilizer(肥料).But now places like Blue Spruce Farm have a new way of using cow wastes. They use them to produce electricity.

Here’s how it works:A big machine moves back and forth cleaning the barn floor.“The cows aren’t bothered,” says Marie Audet.“They are animals of habit; they get used to it, and just lift one foot and then another to let it go by.”

The machine pushes the manure into a big 600-gallon tank like a small swimming pool. The tank is called a digester(化粪池)because what happens there is just like what happens inside a cow:Bacteria(细菌)get to work and continue to digest the manure.

Methane gas(甲烷、沼气)in the atmosphere is known as a “greenhouse” gas because it keeps heat just like a greenhouse does, causing our planet to warm up.That’s an environmental concern. But the digester has a good result. Its gas is kept and used to power electric generators(发电机).

At Blue Farm, the generators make enough electricity to power 400 homes. The Audet family sells the extra electricity they can’t use themselves.

"Spending as little as $5 a day on someone else can make you happier," the researchers from a team at the University(大学)of British Columbia and Harvard Business School reported.

Their experiments on 600 volunteers in the US showed people were feeling happier when they spent money on others.

The team asked their 600 volunteers about their income(收入),their daily costs, gifts for others and donations to charity. "No matter how much money each person made, those who spent money on others could get greater happiness than those who spent money only on themselves," Dunn said.

Dunn's team also surveyed 16 workers at a company in Boston after they received an award of between $3,000 and $8,000. "Of course they felt happy after receiving the awards," they wrote in their report. "But when they gave the people in need $5, they were happier."

"The findings showed that as little as $5 could be enough to produce happiness on a whole day," Dunn said.

1. There were ______ people in all who took part in the experiments.

2.The underlined word "experiments" means ______ in Chinese.

    A. 会议 B. 表演             C. 实验             D. 化验

3.What does the passage mainly tell us?

    A. Money is not important for people.

    B. Money really can "buy" happiness if you spend it on others.

    C. We should try our best to give our money to more people in need.

    D. Spend all the money on others and you'll feel happier.

What do you do if you're stranded(处于困境的)on a lonely island? Surely you need to find a way to get in touch with the outside world. Your best chance of doing this is to draw the attention of a passing plane.
  Body signals(信号)
Pilots from different countries understand body signals if they have the correct training. When you wave your arms up and down in a straight line, it means "yes". When you point downwards and swing your arm from side to side, it means "no". If you want the pilot to know that it's safe to land, push your hands out in front of you and bend(弯曲)your knees. If you want to say that it's not safe to land, put your arms in the air and move them to one side.
  Smoke signals
The smoke from a fire can be seen from far away, so it's a good way to draw attention. If the weather is dry, it isn't hard to start a fire. Remember, however, that fires can be very dangerous if they get out of control. Never light a fire unless you're sure that it can't spread. If the ground is dark, light smoke can be seen more easily. Green grass and leaves produce light smoke.
  Ground-to-air signals
It's a good idea to build some signals, too. Use large pieces of wood to make the symbols(标记). If you can't find any wood, use earth. Some useful symbols are:
F "I need food and water."
  II "I need medicine."
  I "I am badly hurt."
X" I am unable to move from here."
  Pilots' replies
If the pilot lowers the plane's wings from side to side, this means "message received and understood". (At night, the pilot flashes the plane's green lights.) If the pilots flies the plane in a clockwise circle, this means "message received but not understood".(At night, the pilot flashes the plane's red lights.)
However, there is no signal which means "message not received". Why not?
【小题1】 Which picture means "it's not safe land"?

【小题2】 What can we learn from the passage?
A.Swinging your arm from side to side means "yes".
B.If the ground is dark, light smoke can't be seen.
C.If you need some medicine, make a symbol "II".
D.The pilots make replies with a blue light at night.
【小题3】 What is the passage mainly about?
A.The explanation of building signals on an island.
B.The importance of making signals on an island.
C.Ways of sending out signals on a lonely island.
D.Ways of receiving signals from a lonely island
