Five years ago, David Smith wore an expensive suit to work every day. "I was a clothes addict (有瘾的
人)" he jokes."I used to carry a fresh suit to work with me so I could change if my clothes got wrinkled (皱的)." Today David wears casual clothes-khaki pants and a sports shirt-to the office. He hardly ever wears a
necktie. "I am working harder than ever," David says, "and I need to feel comfortable." More and more
companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes. In the United States, the change from
formal to casual office wear has been gradual. In the early 1990s, many companies allowed their employees
to wear casual clothes on Friday (but only on Friday). This became known as "dress-down Friday" or "casual
Friday"."What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for employees has really become an everyday
thing," said a business consultant (顾问) Maisly Jones.
Why have so many companies started allowing their employees to wear casual clothes? One reason is
that it's easier for a company to attract new employees if it has a casual dress code.""A lot of young people
don't want to dress up for work," says the owner of a software company, "so it's hard to hire people if you
have a conservative (保守的) dress code." Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive
when they are wearing comfortable clothes. In a study conducted by Levi Strauss Company, 85 percent of
employers believe that casual dress has a negative influence on morale (士气). Only 4 percent of employers
hold the opinion that casual dress has a negative influence on productivity. Supporters of casual office wear
also argue that a casual dress code helps them save money. "Suits are expensive, if you have to wear one
every day," one person said. "For the same amount of money, you can buy a lot more casual clothes."

2. David Smith wears casual clothes now, because ________.
A. they make him feel at ease when working

As an American writer, Mark Twain, once said, “Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody 1 anything about it.” It is true that everybody talks about the weather. Many people begin their talks 2 saying: “ Isn’t it a nice 3 ?” “Do you think it will rain?” “ I think it’s going to snow.”

Many people think they can tell 4 the weather is going to be like. But they 5 ever agree with each other. One man may say, “ Do you see how cloudy it is in the east? It’s going to rain tomorrow.” Another 6 say, “ Yes, it’s cloudy in the east.We are going to have fine weather tomorrow.”

People often look for the weather they want. When a farmer needs water, he looks for something to tell him it’s going to rain and he won’t believe 7 else. When friends have a picnic, they are so 8 the weather is going to be fine very 9 that they sit eating their lunch while it is raining.

Almost everyone listen to what the weatherman says. But he doesn’t always tell us what we want, and sometimes he makes a mistake.Still, he is 10 most of the time.

One day, I heard an American boy say to a Chinese girl student, “You speak very good English.” But the girl answered, “No, no. My English is very poor.” The foreigner was quite   1  at the answer. Thinking he had not made   2   understood or the girl had not heard him clearly, he said, “Yes, indeed, you speak very well.” But the girl still kept saying, “No.” In the end the American boy could not understand and didn’t know   3   to say.

What’s wrong with the girl’s answer? She didn’t   4   a compliment (恭维)in the same way as the American people do. She should answer, “Thank you” instead of “No”. She     5      understood what the American boy had said, but she thought she should be modest. In the west, people will feel proud and   6  when they are praised(赞扬). So if someone says the dishes you have cooked are very delicious, you should say, “Thank you.”

In our country we think being modest is a virtue (美德) and being proud is a bad thing, but in my opinion, being confident does not   7  being proud, so sometimes you should be confident    8   being modest.

9    you are modest and say, “No, I’m afraid I can’t do it well”, while working in a western country, the others may think that you really cannot do it. If you often say “No”, you will certainly be looked down on by others. When asking for a job, if one says something like “Yes, I can certainly do it” instead of “Let me have a try ”, he or she will  10  get it. So in the west, you should be brave to show your self-confidence.
