When a light plane flew off line (偏离航线), it hit (撞) the mountains and its pilot (飞行员) was killed. The only passengers (乘客), a young woman and her two baby daughters were unhurt (没受伤). It was the middle of winter. Snow was thick on the ground. The woman knew that the nearest village was kilometers away. Early next morning, she heard planes passing over her head and wanted to know how she could send a message (信息). Then she had an idea. She stamped out (踏出) the letters“SOS”in the snow.
