One day Edison sold sandwiches on a train. Suddenly the train was held up in a waste land (荒地) because a railroad bridge had been badly destroyed(毁坏). As time passed, everybody in the train felt hungry, so Edison's sandwiches sold well. When only a few pieces were left, a poor old woman came slowly up to Edison. She searched (寻找) her pockets and then put a warm coin (硬币) in Edison's hand. She took a sandwich and went back to her seat. Four hungry children of hers waited there, all expecting (期望) that sandwich. The woman sat down, tore (扯开) the sandwich into four pieces and gave them to the children.
Edison saw that and hurried over. He gave all the sandwiches left to the children and handed the coin back to the old woman, saying, “Keep it, madam. I would never take away your last bit.”
