　　“You are not going to day camp(野营)unless you have finished your summer school lessons,”Mrs．Brown told her daughter Penny．“You know that is the rule．”Secretly, Mrs．Brown hated that Penny had to spend her summer studying．She tried to tell herself that is was good for Penny because life wasn’t always fun and games．

　　“Why do I have to go to summer school?”thought Penny angrily．“It’s not my fault(过错)that we had to move．”

　　Two months ago, Penny’s family had moved to a new state．She had to take a test for her new school．So she had to take some summer school lessons for starting in the fall．She had missed several weeks of school to prepare for the move．So now Penny went to summer school each morning．It wasn’t that she didn’t like her teacher．Penny just thought it was silly to have to go to school in the summer．

　　Within a few minutes, Penny was in her room studying．Mrs．Brown smiled as she saw it．She decide she would steal some time to play with Penny this afternoon．

　　An hour later, Penn came out her room．“You worked hard this morning, Penny．Good girl．Let’s go to play outside,”said Mrs．Brown．

　　Mr．Brown lived in a house less than two miles from his office, so he was able to drive home every day for lunch．Every time he drove home at noon, he found many cars were parked outside his house and there was no room for his own car．He had to drive somewhere else to park his car．Then he had to walk back home．This made him very angry．

　　He had put up a board, which said, “ No parking” in the garden facing the road, but nobody noticed it．People seemed to obey(遵守) only a police notice with letters on a blue board：

POLICE NOTICE

NO PARKING

　　Mrs．Brown suggested that he could steal a police notice．He was afraid to do so．She then suggested that he could make one just like a police notice．He said he was not the police and couldn't use the word “police”．Several days later, Mr．Brown made a blue board with white letters：

POLITE NOTICE

NO PARKING

　　“ Oh!” Mrs．Brown said, “You told me you weren't going to use the word “police”, but why do you use it now?” “Really?” he asked, “Look again．” She started to laugh．“You are really clever．”

　　“Well, we’re in our new house．Let’s get a new pet to go along with it,” Mrs．Brown said to her husband．

　　“That sounds like a very good idea,”he answered．“Do you want to see the ads in the newspaper?”

　　“Let’s go to the animal shelter．Many pets there need homes．Since tomorrow is Saturday, we can both go,”she said．

　　The next morning the Browns met Mr．Snow at the animal shelter．“We want to be sure that the pets here go to good homes,”Mr．Snow said,“So I need to ask you some questions．”

　　After they talked for a while, the Browns decided to get a small dog．It wouldn’t need a big house or a big yard．A small dog would bark(吠)and warn(警告)them if someone tried to break into their house．After Mr．Snow gave the Browns a book on pet care, they chose one and wanted to take her home right away．But the animal doctor hadn’t examined her yet．So Mr．Snow told them to return on Sunday．

　　On Sunday afternoon the Browns went to the animal shelter．The animal doctor said,“Shadow has had all of her shots(预防针)．She will be healthy．”The Browns thanked the doctor and took Shadow home．

　　 It's Saturday morning．Betty is having her breakfast． Betty's mother and father are with her．On Saturday morning Betty doesn’t go to school．She helps her parents do some housework．This morning she says to her mother，“Can I help you，mum?”“Yes，you can help me．”her mother says，“You can go to Mr．White's shop．Something is wrong with our clock．Mr．White mends(修理) clocks．Our clock is in his shop．”“Is he mending our clock?”Betty asks．

“Yes，”her father says．“And this morning it is ready．”“Yes，it is ready．”her mother says，“Go to Mr．White's shop．Take this bag．You can put the clock in it．”Betty takes the bag and goes to the shop to get the clock back home．
