Helen Keller was born in 1880 in Alabama in the USA. When she was one year and a half, she got ill. After her illness Helen couldn't hear or see. And then she became blind and deaf. Helen was a difficult child. Her parents did not know what to do.

　　Her parents tried to do their best for their daughter and they asked a young teacher called Anne Sullivan to their home to teach Helen. Miss Sullivan worked with Helen all day. Helen was a smart girl but she couldn't hear or talk. She was angry at this. So she was always crying and shouting. Anne Sullivan took her alone to a nearby house. After two weeks, Helen became quiet. Anne began to teach her to spell. She took Helen's hand and spelled a word in her hand. Helen soon learned to say what she wanted in this way.

　　Ann taught Helen to speak. After 10 lessons she surprised her teacher. Anne often took her for walks in the country near her home. Helen learned to write. By the time she was 17, she was studying French, German, Latin, physics and many other subjects. She was still blind and deaf. In 1900 Helen entered Raddiffe (瑞得克利夫) university. Miss Sullivan sat next to Helen in class. She spelled all the words into Hellen's hand. Miss Sullivan also read to Helen all the time. Soon Helen's talents were found.
