     Have you ever seen a horse with toes? Millions of years ago, horses had many toes. They had four
toes on each front foot. They had three toes on each back foot. These small horses lived in the forests.
Their toes helped them run over the soft, wet ground.
     It was once very hot in the forest. But the weather changed later. It became cold. Many trees  could
not live in such cold weather, so they died and fell.  Open fields took the place of forests. The sun made

Stop for Fair Rules

   Once there were no rules to protect workers. Men, women, and even children had to work many hours each day. They were not paid much. Sometimes they got sick. They had to keep working.

   Sometimes workers stop working when they want more pay. When workers all stop a job together, it is called a "strike".

    Many years ago, in some Indian tribes, women made the moccasins (软鞋) for the men to wear to war. Sometimes the women leaders in the tribe did not want a war. Then they would stop making moccasins for the men to wear. Were these Indian women going on strike?

Every winter the Indians caught beavers(河狸或称为海狸). They sold these beaver furs to men from France. In the 1600s and 1700s, people in France wanted beaver furs for coats and hats.
