Homework should be done as soon as you get home from school. If you have after-school activities, the homework should be done first. At the same time, it is fine to allow for a snack break and also to allow for stretching(拉伸的)breaks.

Also, you should remember that it is your duty to do your homework. Next time, when you want to depend on Mom and Dad for help, please try to find the answer yourself, because you will learn much, much more that way.

When you have a question, especially something about a science or math, don't always turn to your teacher! It is a good idea to try to find the answer yourself. If this doesn't work, you can also look at the materials in the back of the book. They may guide you to the pages you should look at to help you understand the problem.

Finally, while doing homework, don't think about or do other things. Keep working. Setting a time limit(限制) often helps with this. Different ages decide different amounts of time. 10-15 minutes is good for a child that's aged 6-8. A time of 20-30 minutes is about right for a child aged 9-12. Kids can keep studying for 30-45 minutes from the ages of 13 to 15. This, of course, depends on your abilities to pay attention and stay on tasks.

Every year, more and more students become volunteers. The projects may be with their school,
neighborhood, or town, but the work of all volunteers is important. Students find that there are many
advantages to volunteering.
First, volunteering helps others. Many people complain about problems in our society. Volunteers
are part of the solution to the problems! While it is easy to complain about things that are not right, the
volunteer takes action rather than complaining. When a student spends time working at a retirement
(退休) home, cleaning up a park, or teaching a younger student, the volunteer makes the world a better
place.
Second, being a volunteer makes students feel good about themselves. When a student volunteer
knows that his or her efforts have made someone else's life better, the volunteer feels great. Students
always hear people saying that everyone should care about other people. Volunteers make it happen.
Although some volunteer work is long or tiring, student volunteers end the day knowing they did the right
thing. Their parents, teachers, and the public are proud of them. Knowing they did the right thing makes
them feel better, even if they are tired.
Finally, students learn that volunteering is fun. A group of students might volunteer to clean up a
riverbed in early spring. It is fun to be with their friends, to enjoy the weather, and to picnic later in a
beautiful, clean area. Other students might read to young children in a playgroup. It is fun to spend time
with children and to have them smile and laugh. No matter what their ages or talents are, every student
can be a volunteer. The work of student volunteers is a powerful force that makes the world a better
place.

In 1985 I visited China.I thought many Chinese parents put much pressure on only high school students. But in the following years, I found the pressure came to primary school children, then those of pre?school age, and finally newborn babies and pre?born children.

In order to succeed, one or two years before entering kindergarten (幼稚园) they must study English, drawing, singing, and dancing, and the three years of kindergarten are mostly spent to build up an early lead in primary school performance.

What if parents let their 3 or 4 years old child enjoy free time on Saturday and Sunday, after five days in nur?sery? They would be thought to be wasting their kid's early life.As others do, so must they do.

Yet children have not only the right, but the need to play.Kindergartens should not be a school. There should be no classroom, no lesson, no homework, and especially no exams.Instead, playing should be the first thing for children.

They need to play with others and also to play on their own, as playing is good for learning in a lively way. Children can discover numbers while playing games and the alphabet (字母表) through songs. Some Chinese cha?racters can become familiar to them by being used in games. But the problem with kindergartens is very serious.Chinese parents think studying is more important.Children work hard while having less and less time to play. What these parents fail to realize is that they are following the examples of how not to raise a kid.
