Bill and Sally White, their father and mother, and some of their friends were visiting Bill's uncle George at the seashore. Uncle George was Bill's father's brother. He had a house and a sailboat(帆船). Bill and Sally had visited him many times. They liked the seashore very much.
It was late in August. The air was cool, but the water was warm enough for swimming. Uncle George had invited them all to go sailing(航海) with him. They were going to sail for two or three hours and then have a picnic on one of the islands in the bay(海湾).
The young people were very excited, but Mrs. White was afraid of the sailboat. “I don't want to ride in the sailboat, George,” she said. “It goes too fast. Besides, I'd get wet and cold.”
“Well,” said Uncle George, “you don't have to go in the sailboat if you don't want to, Alice. The Thompsons are taking their motorboat, and you can go in that. You'll be dry and warm.”
“What do you think of the weather, George?” said Bill's father. “I see a few clouds in the sky.”
“Oh, it will be all right,” said Uncle George. “Anyway, if it gets cloudy, we can come back. Let's go.”
They all got into the boat, and Uncle George went to work. He untied(解开) the ropes and held the boat, and the boat began to move slowly. When they were about fifty yards from the shore, he raised the sail.
“Watch your heads!” he called out. The wind was blowing. It filled the sail, and the boat began to move fast. “Just like a bird,” Sally thought. “Oh, this is wonderful!”
