　　The earth rotates(旋转), or turns on its axis．It rotates once in 24 hours．The turning of the earth on its own axis is what makes the change from day to night．The earth revolves(旋转)around the sun too．It revolves once a year．

　　The robit(天体运行轨道)of the earth is not a perfect circle．It is oval．The earth's axis is not at a right angle to its orbit, but it is tilted(使倾斜)a little．The turning of the earth round the sun at this angle and in an oval-shaped orbit is what makes the change of the seasons．

　　Nowadays, all these ideas are well-known truths, but it took people a long, long time to be sure about them．It took a lot of thinking, a lot of looking．It took lots of arguments too．
