Mr. Smith is telling two funny stories of his police work.
Story A
I remember catching a “thief” in a clothes shop once. It was strange. The man was hiding a yellow sweater inside his coat. I thought he had stolen it, so I caught him. We found later that his wife gave him the sweater for his birthday, but he hated it. He just wanted to return it to the shop for money, but he didn’t want his wife to see him! We soon let him go.
Story B
Another day, a man called Bob went into a bank on Sixth Street. He wrote on the back of an envelope, “Give me the money! Or I’ll kill you. ” and gave it to the bank clerk. She gave him $100,000 and the man ran away. Then we received a phone call from the bank clerk. She told us to go to the man’s house in Candy Town and get him. What would life be like if you lived on Mars (火星)? Would you be very thirsty because there is so
little water? Would you have strange neighbors?
We could ask the boy called Davey Martin for answers. His family moved from their nice Earth home
to a place on Mars. "His life must be very exciting!" you may say. But Martin doesn't agree.
There Is Nothing to Do on Mars is a book written by a US writer, Chris Gall. It tells of Martin's
experience on the red planet.
Martin moves around on a flying scooter (踏板车).  He builds a fort (堡垒) and looks for real
Martians with his robot dog, Polaris. He does that every day. "I am bored!" says Martin.
But when Polaris' nose leads to a great discovery, Martin's world changes. He digs a hole and finds
water.  It means there is a real ocean under the ground. Martin becomes a hero.
We may never have the chance to live on Mars, but we are like Martin sometimes. We often
complain, "I am bored!" or "There is nothing to do ! " The book may have a deeper lesson about life.
If you're creative and search carefully, you'll be surprised by what you find!
