An Englishman named PhilShaw invented extreme ironing in 1997 because he was bored doing ironing at home.

Extreme ironing is a special kind of outdoor sport. It combines (使结合) danger and excitement with practical ironing.

Who does extreme ironing? People all over the world who like danger do it. There are about l,000 people around the world who do extreme ironing. There are extreme ironing clubs and groups in Britain, Germany, South Africa, New Zealand and the United States. You don't have to have any special qualifications (资格证明)to do it. In fact, anyone can do it. However, it is better to start ironing in your back yard before you start to iron on top of a mountain.

There are, of course, some rules in extreme ironing. The ironing must be outdoor. You must take an iron, an ironing board, and something that you actually iron to get the wrinkles out. Outdoors includes faraway and unusual places, such as on top of a mountain, while skiing, snowboarding, skydiving, or under water. There are no limits. The more unusual the better. However, you should plan carefully because weather conditions can suddenly change on mountains, for example. You should not do extreme ironing on your own.

What kind of things should you have? You must have a real iron. Travel irons are acceptable. You must not use plastic or toy irons. The clothes you iron must be at least the size of a hand towel. It shouldn't be just a handkerchief. The board doesn't have to be fullsize board, but that is preferred. It must be one metre long and thirty centimeters wide and have legs. You must also have proof of ironing that is either a photo or a video, and it should show a recognizable landmark. Be aware that people have already ironed near the top of Everest, the highest mountain in the world, and in the Blue Hole in Egypt, one of the most dangerous places to dive. However, there are still many records to break. Iron on!

53. Where did Phil Shaw usually do ironing before 1997?

  A. At home. B. On top of a mountain.

  C. In faraway places. D. In ironing clubs and groups.

54. Which is the best advice for beginners to do extreme ironing?

  A. Doing extreme ironing alone.

  B. Beginning ironing in their back yards.

  C. Starting ironing on top of a mountain.

D. Joining extreme ironing clubs or groups first.

55. What must you do in extreme ironing?

  A. Iron outdoor. B. Iron in good weather.

  C. Dive in the Blue Hole. D. Ski near a mountain.

56. How do extreme ironers feel when they do the sport?

  A. They feel bored with extreme ironing.

  B. They feel very frightened near the top of Everest.

  C. They feel excited although it is dangerous.

  D. They feel lonely in the places far away from their homes.

I used to dream about Pisa when I was a boy.I read about the famous building called the Leaning Tower of Pisa (比萨斜塔).But when I read the word Pisa, I was thinking of pizza.I thought this tower was a place to buy pizza. It must be the best pizza in the world,I thought.

Many years later I finally saw the Leaning Tower.I knew then it was Pisa and not pizza. But there was still something special about it for me.The tower got its name because it really does lean to one side. Some people want to try,to fix (整修) it.They are afraid it may fall over and they do not like the way it looks.

I do not think it's a good idea to try to fix it.The tower probably will not fall down.It is 600 years old.Why should anything happen to it now? And,if you ask me,I like the way it looks.I like the way it leans over the city.To me it is a very human kind of leaning.Nothing is perfect (完美),it seems to say.

And who cares? Why do people want things to be perfect? Imperfect things may be more interesting.Let's take the tower in Pisa. Why is it so famous? There are many other older, more beautiful towers in Italy. But Pisa tower is the most famous.

People come from all over the world to see it.

Dining Etiquette(礼仪)in Venezuela(委内瑞拉)

In Venezuela, there are some special rules of etiquette that people usually follow when they are dining. You need to keep in mind the following things:

·None of the guests should talk with just one person. The conversation should be with everybody. In addition, it should be related to topics interesting for both men and women.

·In a formal dinner, the guest is never served more than once. The only thing that can be served more than once is the dessert, the liquor , and the wind.

·It is not polite to refuse a plate. If you don’t want something, just eat a small portion.

  It’s important to_______________________

·The first plate (the appetizer开胃小吃)should always be served on a separate plate.

·The silverware should be placed in the same order that it will be used: the first one much farther away from the plate and the last one much nearer the plate. The forks or the desserspoons can be placed on the table when the dessert is served.

·The wine and water glasses are placed in front of the plate to the right of each guest. The water glass is on the left side. When we serve the coffee and liquors, we should bring the bottles and the glasses on a tray.

·Finally, as a sign of good taste, we usually offer the guests a little humid towel with water and lemon so they can clean their hands, even if they never get their fingers dirty during the meal. This should be done after the dessert is finished.

By following these little rules, you will be successful at your dinner, as a guest or as a hostess.
