Ford cars run on roads over the world. They are named after Henry Ford, who was not the inventor of cars. but was the first to mass-produce them at a reasonable price. Living on his father's farm as a lad, Henry kept any old metal he found. He loved to make new things, and often took watches and clocks apart. Friends later came to him with some of their pieces that needed repairing. As a young man, he worked in a factory. There were few cars on the roads and Henry could never buy a car. He built a car in a shed behind his house that was lighter and simpler than those on the market. Friends then asked him to open a company. The Ford Motor Company opened in 1903 and the car sold for $850 each. By 1915 about 800 Ford cars were being made each day. Henry Ford's famous Model T was made in 1927 when over 15 million had been produced. They were all painted black. Henry has been dead some time now, but his name lives on.

For the 17 years my life was very happy. Then the first sad thing happened. My mother became very ill. Just before she died, she asked Elizabeth and me to go to her room. She said, “Victor and Elizabeth, I’m very happy because you love each other, and because one day you’ll get married. Everyone in the family loves you, Elizabeth. Will you take my place in the family, my dear? I can die happy if you look after them when I have gone.”
