题目列表(包括答案和解析)

Polar bears are born in dens(洞穴)on land and their mother stays with them for the whole winter without eating anything. The mother and the babies emerge around March, famished from a long winter and must immediately go hunting to find food to stay alive. Now, the only hunting they know is to catch seals from floating ice in the open ocean. In March, polar bear mothers and cubs have to swim from the land in Spitsbergen to the edge of the polar ice cap.

Normally this is a short swim, since in March the polar ice cap is very close to the land, and the polar bears, and even the babies, are good swimmers. However, last year we saw that the polar ice cap had really shrunk in size due to global warming

Swimming hundreds of miles, especially when they are hungry and have babies following them is really hard, and many bears are dying because of starvation.

The polar bear population in the Spitsbergen area was once threatened by hunters. In the 1970s,a ban on hunting was imposed and the polar bear population has been steadily increasing from just a few hundred to about 2,000 to 3,000.This was a great success story. However, now, because of global warming, the population is again in danger. If we do not stop making so much earbon dioxide。we will lose these beautiful animals forever.

The polar bears are just one example of animals that have become endangered because of man’s appetite for energy obtained by burning fossil fuels. All life on earth could be in danger unless we change our ways,What can we do? To reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the air we must conserve and make energy without burning coal and oil.Instead,we can use the sun or the wind to generate electricity. We must also cut down on needless driving and turn things that use electricity off  when we are not using them.In addition,we have to stop cutting down forests and start planting more trees.

Scientists in India have invented a new way to produce electricity. Their invention does not get its power from oil, coal or other fuels. It produces electricity with the power of animals. India has about eighty million bullocks. They do all kinds of jobs. They work in the fields. They pull vehicles through the streets. They carry water containers. Indian energy officials have been seeking ways to use less imported oil to provide energy. Scientists at the National Institute for Industrial Engineering in Bombay wondered whether the millions of bullocks could help. Many villages in India lack electricity, but they have many bullocks. And often the animals are not working. One job done by bullocks is to pump water out of the well. The animals do this by walking around and around in a circle. As they walk, they turn a heavy stick that makes the pump move. This simple technology is centuries old. Scientists thought that the same technology could be used to produce electricity. Bullocks walk in a circle only two or three times a minute. This is much too slow to produce electricity, but it can create enough power to turn a series of gears(齿轮). A large gear sits next to a smaller gear. As the large gear turns, it causes the smaller gear to turn. That gear turns an even smaller one. Each gear moves faster because it is a little smaller. The smallest gear may turn extremely fast. Clocks operate with gears. So do cars and so does the device invented by the Indian scientists to produce electricity.

According to the officials in the United Nations, the idea is being tested at several places in India. The device is easy to operate and repair. And it can be moved easily. It costs about three hundred and seven dollars now to make such a device, but production of large numbers of them could cut the cost of each to about two hundred dollars.

1.Who first thought of using bullocks to provide energy?

A.Indian energy officials.                   B.Scientists in India.

C.Officials in the United Nations.             D.Researchers in Europe.

     A.pulling vehicles                                    B.harvesting crops

C.pumping water out of wells                  D.carrying food baskets

3.In the sentence “This simple technology is centuries old” in Paragraph One, “This simple technology” refers to_____.

     A.using bullocks to produce energy

B.using pumps to draw water out

C.having bullocks walk around to make the pump move

D.connecting gears of different sizes to produce electricity

4.Which of the following can NOT be inferred from the passage?

A.Once widely used, this device can help reduce the use of oil to provide energy.

B.Indian government has decided to put the idea into practice at once.

C.This idea will make progress as it is environment-friendly to the people.

D.This device is designed in the way as clocks work with gears working on each other.

5.What is the U. N. officials’ attitude towards the idea?

       A.Approving.          B.Doubtful.        C.Negative.      D.Passive.

As global warming continues to be a major concern for the future of our planet, people are starting to turn to green living practices to help save it for future generations.Green living involves every aspect of our daily life from driving to work to mowing(割草等)our lawns.

Making the switch to green living all at once might scare most people away from carrying out those earth-friendly changes. There are many ways to ease into this practice and still help save the earth’s environment.

Air pollution is a major problem for some cities.A lot of it comes from the factories, but that’s not the only way contributing to global warming.Automobiles give off a fair amount of pollutant(污染物)into the air. When you have a lot of cars driving around on the city streets, you’re multiplying the amounts of pollutant being emitted(发出)by each car that’s destroying our ozone(臭氧).If you want to save the environment, you can start by either car pooling, walking more instead of driving or even purchasing hybrid(混合的)models that don’t do as much damage.

Then let’s take a look at your home. What kinds of bulbs are you using? The standard bulbs we use only contribute to higher electricity bills and more carbon dioxide. If you switch at least some of your standard bulbs with the compact fluorescent(荧光)bulbs, you can save the environment while saving on your electric bill.

Recycling is also an excellent way to save our environment.Try to buy as many products as you can that can be recycled. The less trash that has to be burned or buried into our soil, the better off our planet will be.

These small changes may seem that they couldn’t help much for the environment, but they can help tremendously.Every little bit we do is a much-needed step toward reserving(保留)natural resources for our future generations.

C
Wind is the movement of air from an area of high pressure to an area of low pressure. In fact, wind exists because the sun unequally heats the surface of the Earth. As hot air rises, cooler air moves in to fill the gap. As long as the sun shines, the wind will blow. And as long as the wind blows, people will manage it to power their lives.
Ancient sailors used sails to capture the wind and explore the world. Farmers once used windmills to grind their grains and pump water. Today, more and more people are using wind turbines to make electricity from the breeze. Over the past decade, wind turbine use has increased at more than 25 percent a year. Still, it only provides a small part of the world's energy.
Most wind energy comes from turbines that can be as tall as a 20-story building and have three 200-foot-long (60-meter-long) blades. These devices look like giant airplane propellers(螺桨)on a stick. The wind spins the blades, which turn a shaft connected to a generator.
The biggest wind turbines generate enough electricity to supply about 600 U.S. homes. Wind farms have tens and sometimes hundreds of these turbines lined up together in particularly windy spots, like along a ridge. Smaller turbines set up in a backyard can produce enough electricity for a single home or small business.
Wind is a clean source of renewable energy that produces no air or water pollution. And since the wind is free, operational costs are nearly zero once a turbine is erected. Mass production and technology advances are making turbines cheaper, and many governments decrease tax to encourage wind-energy development.
Some people think wind turbines are ugly and complain about the noise the machines make. The slowly rotating blades(螺旋风片) can also kill birds and bats, but not nearly as many as cars, power lines, and high-rise buildings do. The wind is also changeable: If it's not blowing, there's no electricity generated.
Nevertheless, the wind energy industry is increasing sharply. Globally, generation more than quadrupled(四倍) between 2000 and 2006. At the end of last year, global capacity was more than 70,000 megawatts. In the energy-hungry United States, a single megawatt is enough electricity to power about 250 homes. Germany has the most installed wind energy capacity, followed by Spain, the United States, India, and Denmark. Development is also fast growing in France and China.
Industry experts predict that if this pace of growth continues, by 2050 the answer to one third of the world's electricity needs will be found blowing in the wind
63. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?
A. The rotating blades can kill as many birds as high-rise buildings do
