题目列表(包括答案和解析)

After ruling the tennis world for almost five years, Roger Federer is adjusting to life at NO.2.But, like any king whose throne(王冠) has been taken away, the Swiss star is already planning secretly his return to power, beginning at this week’s US Open.

The problem is, many experts think he will never do it.They blame everything from age and tough competition to his racket(球拍) and psychology.

For years Federer, 27, had enjoyed the view from the top.Competitors saw him as undefeated, and for the most part he was. However, before the 2008 season began, Federer had an illness that stole his strength and clearly affected his play on the court.Ever since, he has struggled to return to form, winning just two of his last 14 tournaments.

“Twenty-seven is an age when your body starts talking back to you.” tennis great John McEnroe told the New York Times.

Pancho Sefura, another tennis great, noted that Federer is also facing a maturing crop of young talents. “There are too many great players now,” he said, naming Britain’s Andy Murray, 21, and Latvia’s Ernests Gulbis, 20.

US magazine Sports Illustrated tennis columnist Jon Wertheim suggested that part of Federer’s problem could be his insistence on using a small racket. He says that the smaller head demands ball control. But we see time and again that racket makers try to get players to use a certain stick — one they would like to market to consumers and it has a negative effect the professional game.

Sports psychologist Jim Loehr told the Times that Federer is probably feeling “a sense of doubt” after being considered as undefeated for so long. If Federer is to recover his state of being undefeated, Loehr said he must overcome his doubt. “Federer doesn’t need fame and money. But he has to get better. He has to go to a whole new level. That’s the only way he stays in the game,” he said.

As for beginning his first Grand Slam(大满贯) in ages as the NO.2 seed, Federer said it might be for the best. “Five years almost, I was expected to win every tournament I entered,” he said, “so maybe Rafael Nadal now feels what I had to feel for a very long time.It will be interesting to see how he handles it.”

Last weekend, a girlfriend that I've known since college was visiting. As we left the airport, we had to
stop at the grocery for a case of diet soda. On our way to lunch she asked me "Do you think that drinking diet soda makes you fat?"
"Depends on whom you ask," I said. Last year, researchers from the University of Texas Health
Science Center in San Antonio reported that adults who drink diet soda did not lose weight. They were
actually more likely to become overweight than those adults who did not drink soda at all or those that
drink regular soda. In fact, the more diet soda consumed, the more likely someone would become
overweight. To be specific, there was a 41% increase in the risk of being overweight for every can or
bottle of diet soda consumed daily.
In this study, researcher Sharon Fowler followed over 600 normal weight adults ages 25-64 over a
seven to eight year period of time. She has a number of theories as to why weight gain may be a result of
drinking a zero-calorie beverage:
1.Artificial sweeteners may affect your body’s ability to judge how many calories you consume. When no calories are consumed, the body may continue to crave(渴望) what it expected and could lead to
overeating.
     2.  Some people give up regular sodas to justify their favorite dessert and still take in too many calories. A regular soda contains about 150 calories while your dessert may be double that in calories easily.
     3. For others who were gaining weight already, switching to diet soda wasn’t enough to stop the gain.
Since her first piece of research, Fowler has tracked another 2000 people with similar results. Do the
faux sweet products induce people to want more sweets? Fowler suggests that perhaps it’s not the soft
drinks themselves that cause weight gain but that there is some link between diet soda drinking and
overweight.
1. Why do people give up regular soda and take diet one according to Fowler's research?
A. Some want to gain weight.
B. Some want excuses to have dessert.
C. Some mistake diet soda as no-calorie drink.
D. Diet soda can help people lose weight.
2. Which of the following statements is the result of Fowler's research?
A. Diet soda can directly cause people to gain weight.
B. Diet soda increases the risk of becoming overweight.
C. Diet soda actually contains more calories than regular soda.
D. Those who drink diet soda are 41% more likely to become fat.
3. Which can NOT explain the link between diet soda and overweight?
A. People overeat to satisfy the body’s needs for calories that diet soda lacks.
B. People also have foods containing more calories when they choose diet soda.
C.Diet soda has little effect on those who have become overweight already.
D.Diet soda is a sweetener that increases the body’s needs for calories.
4. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Only overweight adults are involved to see if diet soda can help lose weight.
B. The research lasted many years and over 2000 people took part in it.
C. Diet soda has opposite effect on those who take it to lose weight.
D. Sharon Fowler is the first to find drinking diet soda leads to overweight.
5. What does the underlined word "induce" probably mean?
A. cause
B. reduce
C. advise
D. inspire

Today I was at the mall waiting for friends, when a lady wearing a knit hat and a sweater came up to me and, shivering, said, “I’m homeless. Would you mind buying me some food?”
In that split second, everything I’d learned since kindergarten flashed through my mind. Don’t talk to strangers … Be a good citizen … People will take advantage of you … Treat others as you wish to be treated … The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return … I guess love won the debate. “Sure,” I said. “What would you like?”
She thought and then said, “I’d like to get Chinese food.” We headed upstairs. On the way she told me about when she was a teenager. She remembers taking pictures for the yearbook with her best friend. She was in the band and played basketball. She got good grades and was a good student.
She ordered soup, an egg roll, white rice, and pepper chicken. I would normally think that was a lot, but she had probably barely eaten in the last few days. I got my usual – lo mein and General Tso’s chicken.
As we ate, we got to know each other. She asked if I played any instruments. I replied that I played the violin, cello, and guitar. She told me she played the flute, piano, guitar, and violin. In the middle of our meal, I realized something. And she thought of it at exactly the same time.
“So, what’s your name?” she asked.
“I’m Claire,” I said, startled at our exact same thought. “What’s yours?”
“Joyce,” she said with a smile.
We continued talking, and she asked my favorite subjects in school and if I wanted to go to college. “Hopefully,” I replied. “I’m interested in nursing.”
“I went to college for nursing,” she said.
I was taken aback. How could we have so much in common? Was she pretending so I’d feel sympathy for her? But her eyes were genuine as she said this.
Meanwhile I was eating my lo mein, picking around the cabbage and the other vegetables. Joyce said, “If you don’t like it you can take it back.” I told her that I liked it, but was not fond of the vegetables. She broke into a big grin. “You don’t like vegetables, huh? Neither did I. But now I do.” I immediately felt guilty. How could I be picking at my food across from someone who barely gets to eat at all?
I tried my best to finish, but she seemed to sense my guilt and said, “You don’t have to eat it if you don’t want it.” How could she know what I was feeling? I told her the dish was my favorite, but I just eat slowly.
She replied, “I used to like lo mein, but pepper chicken was my dad’s favorite, so I get that now.” Noticing that she used the word “was,” I assumed her dad had passed away. I found it sweet that she gave up her favorite in order to honor her dad.
She asked why I was at the mall.
“I’m waiting for friends. We’re going to see ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,’” I replied, stumbling over the words a bit.
“‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,’” she echoed in awe. “What’s that about?” I realized that she didn’t see commercials for movies.
I explained the basic plot and she chuckled. “A man who is born 80 years old and ages backwards! That sounds interesting.”
She got up to get a to-go box. “Would you like one?” she asked, but I refused. I realized that this food would probably last her for a few days, and I was glad she had ordered a lot.
“Would you like these?” I asked, gesturing at the food I had left untouched. “Oh, no, thank you,” she said. “This is enough.” I got up to throw my tray away, feeling guilty about wasting so much.
“I need to meet my friends now,” I explained. “It was so nice to meet you, Joyce.”
“You too, Claire,” she replied with a smile. “Thank you.”
I headed to the theater, and she went back downstairs. It sounds like a perfect coincidence, but I can’t help but think that some force compelled us to meet. I kept puzzling, Why is Joyce homeless? It seems so unfair. She shouldn’t need people to buy her dinner. She was a nurse. She got good grades. She took pictures for her yearbook. She was the person I hope to be in the future. What went wrong? How could such a good life be rewarded with horrible luck?
I feel lucky to have run into Joyce. She changed my outlook. She is still a wonderful person, despite what the world has done to her. I wish her the best, and can only hope that the force that brought us together will help her find what she deserves in life.
