We all know that certain oils are healthier than others. but your oil health goes beyond just the type. The health of your oil can be related to how you use it too.

Each type of oil has what is called a“smoke point. ”The smoke point is the specific temperature at which the oil starts to break down, or in more technical terms, its molecular structure begins to change. These molecular changes result in; changes in flavor, as well as W ww.k s 5u.com changes in nutritional value, specifically, the nutritional value of the oil starts to reduce;changing what once may have been considered an especially healthy oil, like Olive, into one that is unhealthy.

The higher an oil’s smoke point is,the higher the temperature of the oil can be.As a result, each type of oil should be used for the cooking method that is most appropriate to its individual smoke point and heat tolerance. Here is a quick guide for the next time you reach for your favorite oil.]

Ever since news of widespread food recalls caused by a carcinogenic dye broke, there has been confusion(混淆)over possible links to the country of the same name, but Sudan officials say there is no connection whatever.

Sudan is a red industrial dye that has been found in some chilli powder, but was banned in food products across the European Union(EU)in July 2003.

Since the ban was put in place, EU officials have been striving to remove some food products from the shelves. So far 580 products have been recalled.

Last week Sudan's Embassy in the United Kingdom asked the Food Standards Agency(FSA)for clarification of the origin of the dye's name.

Omaima Mahmoud Al Sharief, a press official at Sudan's Embassy in China, explained the purpose of the inquiry was to clear up any misunderstanding over links between the country and the poisonous dye.

“We want to keep an eye on every detail and avoid any misunderstanding there,”she said.“Our embassy to Britain asked them how the dye got that name and whether the dye had something to do with our country. But they told us there was no relationship.”

The FSA, an independent food security watchdog in Britain, received a letter from the Sudanese embassy last week.

“They asked us why the dye is named Sudan, however, we also do not know how it got the name,”she said.“People found the dye in 1883 and gave it the name.Nobody knows the reason, and we cannot give any explanation before we find out.”

Sudan dyes, which include Sudan to 4, are red dyes(颜料)used for colouring solvents(溶剂), oils, waxes, petrol, and shoe and floor polishes. They are classified as carcinogens by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

An earthquake happens when two plates rub(碰撞)together. The earth plates travel in different directions and at different speeds. If one plate is slowly forced underneath the other, pressure builds up until the plates break apart. This process causes the ground to move.It is an earthquake. In other words, earth-quakes are the shaking of the earth's surface caused by the earth's rocky outer layer as a result of the energy stored within the earth. The strain within the rocks is suddenly released(释放).

The damage an earthquake causes depends on where it is and the time it is happening. If an unpopulated region is struck, there will be low loss of life or property. If it hits a large city, there may be many in-juries and much destruction. Many of the areas at risk are largely populated now.Major earthquakes hitting those areas today could produce terrible damage.

Actually, there are several million small earth-quakes every year.Large earthquakes such as the 1964 Alaskan quake that measured 9.2 on the Richter scale, cause millions of dollars in damage. In the last 500 years, millions of people have been killed by earth-quakes around the world-including 240,000 in the 1976 Tangshan earthquake in China.

A 60-second or less earthquake can cause devastation that continues for years after the first tremor(小震).In 1972, a series of severe earthquakes struck Managua, Nicaragua.Fifteen years later, the city still looked the way it had a week after the earthquake hit, because the country did not have the necessary money to rebuild it.

The shaking of the earth is sometimes not the greatest disaster. It is in the ensuing fires and floods that often the greatest damage occurs. In the 1906 earthquake, it was the fires caused after it that did the majority of the damage. An earthquake can also destroy dams high above a city or valleys, causing floods to sweep down and sweep away everything in their path.

(1)

Which of the following is the main idea of the first paragraph?

[ ]

A.

An earthquake comes from inside the earth.

B.

How the earth plates move.

C.

The earth has great energy in storage.

D.

How an earthquake happens.

(2)

Which of the following is mentioned to show that an earthquake can kill too many people?

[ ]

A.

The 1964 Alaskan quake.

B.

The 1976 Tangshan earthquake.

C.

The 1972 Managua earthquake.

D.

The 1906 earthquake.

(3)

HUMANS have spent years exploring space, but how much do we know about deep inside the planet on which we live? The idea of exploring the earth's core (地核)was detailed in an article called“Modest Proposal (建议)”. It was written in May by American scientist David Stevenson. It is similar idea to an American sci-fi movie that was released in March, The Core.

So, because they deal with the same topic, it wouldn't be too strange to compare a scientific report with a sci-fi movie.

  Why explore

The report: The solid inner core of the earth is fluid(不固定的)and responsible for the earth's magnetic field (磁场). * Scientists don't know exactly why all this is so, nor do they know the exact make-up or temperature of the core. *

The movie: An unknown force has caused the earth's inner core to stop rotating (旋转). With the planet's magnetic field rapidly decreasing, our atmosphere starts to come apart.

The result is deadly: birds lose their ability to fly in the right direction and the earth eventually (最终)becomes like a microwave oven (微波炉), cooked by the sun.

  How explore

The report: A nuclear explosion (核爆炸)would be the best way to create a hole big enough to enter the earth. The crack (裂缝)needs to be as long and as deep as several football fields, but only about 30era wide. * The event would be as powerful as an earthquake measuring 7 on the Richter Scale (里氏震级).*

At least 100,000 tons of hot iron would be poured into the crack, along with a metal probe (探测器)the size of a grapefruit (柚子).

The weight of the iron, which is much denser than earth' s outer regions, would open a gap all the way to the planet core, about 3,000kin below. The probe would fall at about 16kin per hour as the crack doses up behind it. * Stevenson said the amount of iron needed is equal to what' s produced in factories around the world in a week. *

The movie: Send a manned vehicle that looks like a windowless subway (地铁)train into the earth's core. Virgil, the ship, is made of a metal that can stand the extreme temperature and pressure found in the core.

Virgil began its journey when it was dropped in the middle of the ocean because this is where the crust (地壳)is thinnest.

  What to do

The report: The weeks-long mission would measure the temperature and chemical composition (make-up)of the core.

The movie: Blow up five 200-megaton (兆吨)nuclear bombs to restart the core.

Choose the best choice according to the story________.

(1)What do the report and the movie have in common?

[ ]

A.Both deal with exploring space.

B.Both deal with going deep to the inside of the earth.

C.Both offer the same reason to explore the earth's core.

D.Both consider it possible for the core to stop rata- ring.

(2)In the movie, a nuclear explosion would ________.

[ ]

A.help man enter the earth

B.create a big crack that leads to the earth's core

C.produce hot iron

D.make the earth's core work again

(3)How long would it take the probe to reach the core according to the report? ________.

[ ]

A.About 30 hours.
B.About 200 hours.
C.About 8 or 9 days.
D.A few weeks.

(4)What does the underlined word“stand”mean? ________

[ ]

A.Rise.
B.Change.
C.Measure.
D.Resist successfully.

(5)We can infer from the passage that the core________.

[ ]

A.is in the danger of stopping rotating

B.still has a lot for us to explore

C.controls the birds' sense of directions

D.might blow up
