There is a big question making the rounds among the parents at my daughter’s class. Should the kids refer to the parents’ friends as “Mr. Jones” or “Mrs. Smith”, rather than using their first names? I was quite shocked, having come from a home where it would have been unheard of to refer to one of my parents’ friends by their first names. This was reserved for only the closest of family friends and relatives, and even they always had “Aunt” or “Uncle” in front of their name.

    Respect is something that is earned. Unlike many of the other virtues we try to nurture(培养)in our kids, respect is a bit more complicated. It is not only necessary when dealing well with others, but the virtue of self-respect is critical for kids to succeed and feel good about themselves and their choices throughout their lives.

    There are several factors that can have a big impact on kids and their ability to be respectful. The first one to consider is manners. Calling adults by their surnames, setting proper examples during sporting events and while driving, and how we talk to each other in our homes all can have an enormous effect on a child’s concept of respect and how important it is. Many of these seemingly trivial(微小的)ideas have become almost outdated, but one should seriously consider the value of these ideas before casting them aside. It is easy to become unaware of these behaviors. Try to keep track of how often your child is subjected to this kind of disrespect.

    The media, as you may have guessed, plays a large part in the increase in disrespect. Movies are equally to blame, with a PG movie often containing an abundant amount of profane language.

    These factors and others all contribute to an alarming increase in disrespect in society. If we don’t step in and change course, we will find living in a morally respectful culture unlikely.

  Bringing up children is hard work, and you are often to blame for any bad behavior of your children.If so, Judith Rich Hams has good news for you.Parents, she argues, have no important long-term effects on the development of the personality of their children.Far more important are their playground friends and neighborhood companions.Ms Harris takes to bits the assumption which has dominated(支配)developmental psychology for almost half a century.

  Ms Harris's attack on the developmentalists “nurture” argument looks likely to reinforce(加强)doubts that the profession was already having.If parents matter, why is it that two adopted children, reared in the same home, are no more similar in personality than two adopted children reared in separate homes?Or that a pair of identical twins, reared in the same home, are no more alike than a pair of identical twins reared in different homes?

  Difficult as it is to track the precise effects of parental upbringing, it may be harder to measure the exact influence of the peer(同龄人)group in childhood and adolescence.Ms Harris points to how children from immigrant homes soon learn not to speak at school in the way their parents speak.But acquiring a language is surely a skill, rather than a characteristic of the sort developmental psychologists hunt for.Certainly it is different from growing up tensely or relaxedly, or from learning to be honest or hard-working or generous.Easy though it may be to prove that parents have little impact on those qualities, it will be hard to prove that peers have vastly more.

  Moreover, mum and dad surely cannot be ditched completely.Young adults may, as Ms Harris argues, be keen to appear like their contemporaries.But even in those early years, parents have the power to open doors: they may initially choose the peers with whom their young associate, and pick that influential neighborhood.Moreover, most people suspect that they come to resemble their parents more in middle age, and people's child-rearing habits may be formed partly by what their parents did.So the balance of influences is probably complicated, as most parents already suspected without being able to demonstrate it scientifically.Even if it turns out that the genes they pass on and the friends their children play with matter as much as affection, discipline and good example, parents are not completely off the hook.

Due to the increasing number of violence acts produced in schools all over the world, more and more parents prefer to have their children educated at home rather than at school. This way they can ensure their safety and well-being, although teachers and school representatives are trying to improve the situation in schools by increasing the number of the persons in charge of the safety of the students.
The main reason for violence acts are the films and cartoons that fill the children’s time. They want to do everything they watch on TV and never think of the consequences, and they may hurt a classmate or a teacher.
On the other hand, parents are not fully satisfied with the children’s results obtained in classes and they consider private classes would have better results.
When a teacher has to watch 30 students in class he can’t probably see what each of them is doing, how he is writing, or if he understands the explanations. At home the teacher can explain in details everything the child doesn’t understand as many times as he considers proper.
And many times the child grows fond of the teacher at home, who becomes his best friend, and who helps him whenever he needs someone to talk to.     
However, the best solution would be a mixture between the education received at school and that at home, because school makes children communicate and socialize. Keeping a child at home for fear there might happen something bad to him only makes the child’s character weak and prevents him from knowing what real life is. Staying in a crystal ball only does harm to the child.
All in all, schools have been created to help children, not to harm them, so it’s best to keep children in these special places, where they learn, laugh, have fun and make new friends.

  One of our biggest fears nowadays is that our kids might some day get lost in a “sea of technology” rather than experiencing the natural world. Fear-producing TV and computer games are leading to a serious disconnect between kids and the great outdoors, which will change the wild places of the world, its creatures and human health for the worse, unless adults get working on child’s play.

   Each of us has a place in nature we go sometimes, even if it was torn down. We cannot be the last generation to have that place. Even a tiny outdoor experience can create wonder in a child. The three-year-old turning over his first rock realizes he is not alone in the world. A clump of trees on the roadside can be the whole universe in his eyes. We really need to value that more.

   Kids are not to blame. They are over-protected and frightened. It is dangerous out there from time to time, but repetitive stress from computers is replacing breaking an arm as a childhood rite(仪式)of passage.

   Everyone, from developers, to schools and outdoorsy citizens, should help regain for our kids some of the freedom and joy of exploring, taking friendship in fields and woods that cement (增强) love, respect and need for landscape. As parents, we should devote some of our energies to taking our kids into nature. This could yet be our greatest cause.
